Hey guys,

So I written a few songs lately and I'm wondering if anyone here like to write songs and if so, what is your way of composing. Me personally I start with what I want to write about, then I work on the music (because that's what I'm best at), and finish with the lyrics. If you have a different way of writing a song, feel free to talk about how you write music.

I start with an idea and try to build a lyric from it. If you look on youtube at BrentalFloss's channel, he has a whole series called "Lyrics 101" where he breaks down the lyric-writing process. It's a pretty good way of how to start out. If you can get one part going, you can start to build off it and add in lines that go with it based on rhyme or theme or whatever else.

I've written a couple of songs, mostly for my friend's band, and I'm totally opposite-the music tends to come first, and the lyrics come from the music. I usually find myself humming the melody, and once that's down I fill it out (I usually only write for the piano, and my excellent friends take my piano music and rhythmic notes and turn it out for the band). Once the music is done, I usually have an idea of what the music wants to say, and the words just seem to flow.

I have written Ten Songs with my band that were heard by others.
By myself that no one has heard?
Twenty.
I normally have a Tune that had no Lyrics. I'll Play it for someone and ask what does it sound like. I ask for nouns or names or something and they tell me and I consider it and go to work on Lyrics that way.
If I like the Idea the other person has I Include the Idea for the theme and compose.
If I reject the Idea I do a 180 opposite and See what happens. Allot of good tunes have came out that way.
Other great songs have been about Events that actually happen. Had a confrontation with a church leader? Make a song about it. Had a goofy friend that can't score without paying for it? Make a song out of it. Got Played at school or work? Make a song about it.

Real Life is way more interesting than fiction.

Other times I just have an Idea and go for it. And make wild changes when a Brilliant set of Lyrics are discovered.

There are only Five songs I have that will probably never know lyrics due to the fact that They Refuse to be Defined. (Happens. Particularly if its about a friend that has passed. Nothing sounds right with that subject. Nothing.)

"And that's all I have to say about that."
Good Luck.
Peace.

I write songs, however I do not write lyrics, I've never been someone to really sing myself or am I comfortable singing. I play quite a few instruments including guitar so I could easily use a recording software and play multiple recordings at once and have the sound of a guitar armada, of course that'd take awhile for me to make the bass riffs and the lead guitar notation and the drum software I use be go well with the bass guitar. Actually, I love bass guitar, so I'd have lots of good bass lines/riffs. And I write my music by taking my favorite songs, from Journey to System of a Down and make beats out of the notation from it that I personally like and wha bam!

orionfoxgibson : That actually sounds like a good idea. I have a lot of riffs that never make into a song I write. I should try that out some time.

I write songs a lot, I'm a vocalist and guitarist in a band and writing songs is no easy task. It takes a lot of practice and what may work for some may not for others, you know? Some artists prefer to have lyrics before a rhythm or beat and vice versa. There is technically no "wrong" way to write a song so use whatever fits best for you. For me personally I've found writing songs to be challenging. I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my music and need everything to be spot on. For me, writing lyrics comes easier then picking background music, but again, that's just me. I wish you all the best in your song writing, let me know when your finished? I'd love to hear it

I don't usually create lyrics for the songs I make, but that is because I'm not a very creative writer and I can barely play guitar and sing at the same time. Most of my time spent playing guitar is just messing around with various rhythms and note/cord progressions. Usually I will make a riff that sounds interesting or unique and try to flesh it out by experimenting with the different sections of the song until I get something that sounds coherent. The biggest problem I have is not physically writing the music down. Months after making a song I say to myself "Hey how did I play that one song?" lol.

Well I've played with a few different bands, and so well writing kind of becomes part of the job. So I've written some stuff, nothing I think is amazing or great but not terrible. What I usually do, unless I have a great idea for the lyrics is I save the lyrics for last and work on the guitar, because that is what I play, then I'll work on bass (mainly because I know how to play that to, and know in my head how it sounds with the song I'm working on). Then I'll go to whomever is drumming, and doing vocals and work with them on the rest just getting out the drums fills, rhythm and then finally the lyrics (which I work on mainly by myself) and the way the vocals are to sound with the song. It has honestly been a little since I have written anything, I feel kind of inspired to write now lol

I write songs. My method: I write lyrics based on how I feel usually. I often find myself making the lyric flow (rhythm) while I'm writing them. The music usually comes last.

The process of writing music has changed for me in so many ways over the years. One thing is for certain though, I always have kept my lyric separate from my instrumental work.

I write a decent amount; poetry, lyric, short stories. Roughly two decades of work is contained in spiral and composition notebooks shelved in my closet, not to mention the abundant amount I've written and saved strictly in digital form... Needless to say, I have a lot of material to use and pick from. Sometimes my poetry turns into lyrics for a song, yet sometimes I use bits and pieces of various lyric I've previously written in order to form a new song. And then, there have been a few occasions where I've composed entirely new lyrics on the spot,
but lyrical content and approach is always the last step on any musical project I've ever worked on.

Having said that, when I was young (in school), I played guitar and also did some vocal work in a couple of bands with friends. Demos were recorded, local shows were played. I had many friends in similar situations, which resulted in "guest appearing" for their bands on demos and at shows. All of it was very social, and mostly carefree. I didn't care/have interest in composition  at that point, nor was I especially creative. I was having fun and I was playing punk rock.

Then came inexpensive technology... and adulthood.

By the turn of 2000, I was already exiting my teens and computer and internet usage by the "average Joe" was skyrocketing. Personal computers were capable of much more than ever before, the software industry was branching out, and more and more people were getting internet connections at their personal residences. No longer was the internet considered a den of "geeks", like it was when I was surfing the virtual waves back in the early and mid 90s. People that I had thought would never use a computer, nor the internet, started to.

Because of that phenomena (and also because of old age/responsibilities/moving), the era of getting together and playing music had died. For the most part, since 2000, anything that I have composed with other people has been done by recording riffs and such in solo manner (via a computer) and passing between each other for feedback/additions. Everything in the end then gets sent back to me and I do the mix. There have been a few exceptions to this, one instance being back in 2005 when I collaborated with a friend of mine to create his rap EP . That project was done under the same roof. I thoroughly enjoyed doing it too.

As of late, all musical composition has been done by myself. Guitars are run through a processor and pedal(s) prior to being mic'ed in to the computer. Drum work is built and programmed through my computer. Everything is basically done through my computer.

Currently, I am working on an electronica (think ambient and/or noise) album that I hope to have completed and freely available to everyone who might be interested by the end of this year.

Since I'm a teen I love writing songs in my free time. I make acoustic songs because I play the guitar. I always make upbeat and happy songs so when someone hears them they just feel really upbeat and full of happiness. I also perform them solo, although I'm thinking of starting my own band. Writing music and songs just make me feel really good, so I am always making new verses and lyrics for my songs that I write. I hope that I could start getting gigs all over the USA someday.

I have tried to write one. I actually have sang them out loud, but I guess you  could say it does not always work out for me at least.

Songs? No, I'm probably the worst lyricist out there...

I prefer composing classical pieces

How? Well...(and this will probably sound really odd) you know how they say that the great composers never really wrote their music, but rather relayed what they heard from nature? Yeah...you read correctly. I sometimes hear melodies when the wind blows, when I hear water running or when it's snowing, etc.

Occasionally I would sing along, making people look at me funny for suddenly singing out loud randomly (I then thank my lucky stars that I have a nice voice, and that most people know me to be obsessed with music...lol)

I will be taking lessons to learn to play music, so I'm no good right now. Once I get better I can try to compose songs. I'm taking lessons for the guitar starting next week.

My band does horrorcore rap which is not crap you hear on the radio.
But i am a song writer also and what i do to write songs is get a beat and try to relate to it
and then think of something horrible or something nice.. it just depends how the beat sounds and what kind of mood i am in.
But that is basically how i write my music. Or some times the music just comes to me say when i am drinking which is something
that i a am old enough to do and just to make this clear i am not telling anybody under age to go get drunk because it will
make you a great song writer. But yea and some times an idea will come to my head while i am watching a movie or listening to music or
even just watching the news. I am the type of person who's train of thought can be altered by any thing. And i use that feature to make my music and produce some unique lyrics.

I have written a song, but it was a rip off of another song. The only real one I have made was bad. I try not to, but sometimes I do.
