I have never heard of this game, but I'm usually a sucker for survival horror type games. So I ran across it here and the reviews were good, so I thought I'd give it a try. It was released in '95 in Japan and never ported to the US. And god help us all, they re-released it on the virtual Wii console in '10, allowing another generation of kids to be bored stiff by this terrible game.

The first thing that made me not happy was that it was a point and click game. Those are usually not very interesting, but hey. I thought, the reviews were good, so it must be worth it. Then came the opening scenes, which were badly done picture stills. Okay...let's push on...then the game itself.  And that's where the last of the fun died.

This game is slow. Dead slow, and that's no pun. You walk...so...slowly... everywhere....it's...annoying. And yes, you can run...but when you click on an object to interact with it, there's usually this slow walk/movement that she needs to do to align herself correctly with it.  I found myself talking to the screen. "Jennifer, why...so...slow...." I got bored in the first five minutes, seriously.

And also, as a warning, i didn't play past the bedroom with the mirror because it made me extremely angry and left me staring at the screen, controller dangling from my fingers, mouthing W...T....F at the screen. Not in a good 'surprised' way either. In a (spoiler alert, if you care don't read the following capitalized text

I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU MADE ME DO ALL OF THAT STUPID... I WASTED TEN MINUTES OF MY LIFE AND I GOT KILLED BY A HAND STICKING OUT A MIRROR SERIOUSLY? NO WARNING, NO MYSTERIOUS MESSAGE, NOTHING JUST A MIRROR AND A HAND?

Spoiler done. Rage remains, however. Keep that in mind as you read the following review.

Graphics: 3

One of my fellow reviewers said the facial expressions on the little talking head boxes was great. I don't know, maybe they're playing a different port than I am. Even taking into account the system and the year it came out, these graphics are horrible. Flat, bland, 2 dimensional and uninspired. The faces look like cardboard dolls that occasionally twitch, the cut scenes feature terrible photo-realistic (hah) pictures, the colors are boring (and yeah, I know it's supposed to be a horror game. Still no excuse for that.) I'd have expected these graphics out of the original Nintendo system, not the Super Nintendo.

Sound: 3

The background music doesn't inspire any kind of sense of fear or anticipation; it fades out entirely sometimes, and when it's there, it's annoying anyway. Usually you're left without music at all, just the awkward sound of your oddly hoof-like footsteps on bare wood, the muffled creak of sadly unoiled hinges, and random background noises that are trying for startling but tend to be just disruptive instead.

Addictiveness: 4

I am only giving it this score because despite my rage-or maybe because of it-there's a very strong urge in me to go play it again. And I probably will, because I'm nothing if not a sucker for punishment. There's evidently a bunch of different endings you can get depending on what your actions are during the game. And a bunch of secrets and stuff. I don't know. I might play it again, but I'll have to be pretty bored to do so.

Story: 5

I'm giving this a 5 because it's not your typical Super Nintendo story. The story is creepy (even if the game play mechanics, slowness, and terrible graphics conspire to rob you of any atmospheric chill you might get). The deformed mass murdering scissor-man isn't perhaps the most awe-inspiring villain, but it's different and different is usually good. If I play this through again it'll be very interesting to see how they tie this all together. And how many people snuff it, of course.

Depth: 8

This score is mostly based on hear-say; as I mentioned earlier, there are evidently a bunch of different endings you can get in different combinations due to your actions throughout the game. Now, that's fairly common sauce now for games like this, but back in these days it wasn't and it must have been a pretty exciting thing. And because of the different endings, the replay value of this game (should) be pretty high. And on top of that, there's so much to explore and see (hearsay again) that it should keep you busy for quite some time.

Difficulty: 4

Point. Click. Ooh, you can look at that thing on the table (the cursor changes to a box). It's fairly simple, control-wise. Game-wise it's...uh, fairly simple except that they keep killing you for stupid reasons.

Overall: 4.5

I really didn't like this game. I was bored to tears, then driven to frustrated madness, all in less than twenty minutes. That's got to be some kind of record for me. It's still up in the air as to whether or not I'll bother to try it again. I'm really not sure what the other reviewers were seeing that I've evidently missed in this game; maybe it was a touch of nostalgic mistiness? Whatever it was, this game is going on my 'worst games' list.

Beastmode64 : thank you. The game just flat out sucks, there's not much else I can say. I just don't know why it had such good ratings from the previous reviewers. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

CommanderSauce : It would perhaps be a bit more helpful if you would explain...was that comment directed at me, the review, or the game itself?

This review is right on. It's very slow it's very badly done.I know some people might not like bad reviews about games. But not all games are great and we need the bad ones as well as the good. This game is not only slow but it stands still at times.

Let me type more professionally.

I got over the review.

It doesn't even matter anymore.

Yeah, I figured this wasn't really the sort of game I'd enjoy too much. From what I've previously read of it, the concept seems really nice. It's just that they didn't really execute it too well.
