Sonic the Hedgehog was my very first plat former game, and I must say I was not disappointed. I loved Sonic, to be honest and I'm sure I am probably going to get a lot of hate for saying this, but I think Sonic was way better than Mario. Not saying that I don't like Mario, I do but I like Sonic more. Anyway, I grew up with the Sega Genesis and Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2, also Spinball but that is for a different review. I played the crap out of these games and never got bored of them. Even though they do lack story, I mean they never did tell you what Robotnik was up to really, you just kind of assume that he is after world domination. Or he just really hates Hedgehogs?
It's really no surprise that I rated this game a 10 overall, not to say that there are a few things that make this game less than perfect, it is still a great game nonetheless. And every game has a flaw or two. As for Sonic's flaws, sometimes you'll go to fast and hit something VERY unexpectedly and there was also the fact that it did not support saving up until the third installment of the series. Having a Genesis as a kid if you wanted to beat this game you had to leave the system on all night because saving was not an option, to bad too. If Sonic could have saved than this game would get pretty much no criticism from me at least.
Graphics and sound I rated a 9, the game looks and sounds amazing. The graphics, especially for its time look fantastic it is not all pixelated like the NES was and you could tell what everything was. The music was catchy and often got stuck in my head, but it wasn't bad. I really enjoyed listening to the music and sounds that came from this game. The Sonic series had some of the best game music I have ever heard, and I still at times hum a lot of the tunes, especially the Casino Zone song from the second game.
As for addictiveness, since this game was very hooking for me I gave it a 10. I always played Sonic when I was a kid. I still pick it up from time to time, I am still a lucky and proud owner of a Sega Genesis and the copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I remember when I first played Sonic, I was instantly addicted. I played all night the first time, and was told to stay away from the Sega for a while because of playing to much Sonic. So needless to say this game and series is fantastic to me.
The story I rated a 4, because to be honest I don't really know if there was one. There was never any speech or dialogue box to follow, and you never really knew what Robotnik was after. Of course I think it is safe to assume world domination or something of the sort since Sonic doesn't have a Princess or a girlfriend. That is not until later in the franchise. As for depth a 7, this game has a lot of Zones and secret stages where you can collect Chaos Emeralds. The secret stages where not to complicated in this game, or the second one for that matter. All you had to do was control a spinning Sonic in a crazy maze like dimension(?) and find the emerald. Plain and simple, but you could not touch these strange looking red orb things because it would end the stage. Now for difficulty, I rated the game a 5. When I was first getting into the game I thought it was kind of hard but I think that was because I was young. But now when I play it I easily breeze through the game. Often times I'll perform speed runs of the game just to see how much I remember and how well I can play the game.
Overall Sonic the Hedgehog is a great game, and an awesome franchise and I seriously recommend the first installment. Especially if you are into plat formers, and I know that Mario fans often give Sonic hate, but I think that if they tried it they could grow to really like Sonic too. Anyway, until my next review thanks for reading. |
