My dad just picked up a Microsoft Surface with Windows 8, I have to say It's pretty nice. It's fast, fluid and responsive. Windows phone 8 is just amazing, no question about it. What about Windows 8 on desktop computers? From what I've seen, desktop Windows 8 seems pretty solid. Internet Explorer is also been improved,  a lot. Still, it feel to much like a tablet/touch interface.

What do you think about Windows 8?

I haven't used Windows 8 since the Developer Preview back in January, but when I used it, I liked what I saw. Of course, I didn't use the (Then Metro) Modern interface, simply because there was no Windows App Store at the time, but desktop mode was nice and easy to use. The new Office Suite fit in with it pretty nice, though I didn't like it, and the window decorations were very simple and good looking.

I think it is ready for main-stream use, and I plan on upgrading in the very near future, and if anyone asks I say you might as well buy it because it's cheaper than Windows 7 and almost exactly the same. The only change I'd like them to make is disabling the Start screen on desktop computers, but there are third-party tools for that.

I'm not sure if mine is windows eight or not. I think it is seven, but I still like it. Different versions don't seem much different.

I haven't used Win8 yet but after seeing a youtube vid of a couple of guys trying it out, I'm honestly afraid too. It looks like Microsoft basically took Windows Phone and tried slapping it onto a computer. While the OS they have for phones works great for phones, I don't think it adapts well to a PC as is. It really looked like some jury-rigged mess instead a fluid operating system.

The metro features appeared to have potential, but they're also forced upon you in some instances. I noticed that very basic features like snapping doesn't work unless you're in metro. There are also a ton of differences in what you can and can't do in metro vs. out of metro. The start menu covering the entire screen is a bit obnoxious as well. It really looked like they were running two different operating systems independently at the same time rather than one seamless system. The last issue is that the OS adds a LOT of extra needless clicks to accomplish simple tasks. I'm used to quickly jumping to things with maybe a single key stroke and then a click or typing in something and hitting enter. That seems difficult in Win8 and the start menu search won't pull up any windows utilities anymore like command prompts, MSconfig or even network or printers windows.

I still have to reserve some judgment until I personally try it... but I certainly will not buy it or anything running it before using it elsewhere first. I might actually like it if I could completely disable everything metro-related. I guess I'll hang onto my Vista disc for the time being and keep installing that until Windows makes something I can use @.@

For home users I guess it's okay, a little too touch-oriented for non-touchscreen PCs, but the UI is way to kiddified for business users. Also older people who aren't accustomed to a UI change may find it a little hard to get used to because of the Metro UI, no start button, etc. And I agree, it's just Microsoft trying to collide PC and Tablet PC/ Smartphone. Also one thing I like about Windows 8 is IE10. IE has always been my least favorite browser until IE10. (metro, not desktop version.) I'm a home user (although I do repair computers and make money.... but that's another story) and Windows 8 is OK.

I tried a demo at a Sam's Club near me, I really couldn't navigate that well. I didn't know how to exit out of a program (no "x" at the top right of the screen). I guess I'm not a touch screen kind of person. I can't say too many good things about it.

Other than a few missing features and never trying 8, I can't see myself liking it very much. This is mainly because of the missing start menu, which I've used since Windows 95 and has been replaced by a "start screen". If I had a choice, I would always choose 7 over 8.. Just because of experience I've had with it and I'm rather comfortable with the OS itself.

I briefly used Windows 8 at a friends house.
Personally I didn't like it, I found Windows 7 much better and easier to use.
Which is why I still use it to this day.

I'm sure Windows 8 is great for some people, but for me it just wasn't a good fit for my taste.

It's just so different... And the it isn't quite what the commercials totally make it out to be. It also is bad if you don't have a touchscreen computer, because then you have to click the different tiles, which feels VERY choppy.

I liked Windows 8, and let me tell you why.
Basically Windows 8 is essentially just Windows 7 with the use of metro, and that isn't really bad. You get the good interface of Windows 7 and almost all the usability. And the Metro start screen is kind of cool since you can access the news, weather, etc. right from the get go. However, there is one flaw: compatibility with older games. You knew it was coming. There are four instances of this. In Diablo Shareware the game freezes during the dungeon loading screen. In Shogo the game runs slowly and the window border flickers in full screen mode. In Atari Anniversary Edition some of the games run slowly, even Pong, although some games run smoothly. And probably the most infamous of all: Rogue Spear. The game is impossible to run since you can't turn on Direct Draw Emulation on Windows 8. However, I do have a Windows ME virtual machine so I can play the game with Urban Operations. That is my two cents on the subject.

I don't like Windows 8. It's really horrendous. Whenever you start your computer with Windows 8, it doesn't take you to the classic desktop like Windows 1-7, it takes you to a weird menu full of unnecessary pre-installed applications, except for McAfee for my Acer. Luckily, it has an application called Desktop where it takes you to the desktop. At first, when I first used Windows 8, I didn't find the Desktop because nobody told me where it is. Thank goodness for Bill Gates to put that there. I wonder why Windows 8 didn't show the desktop for their commercials. Overall, Windows 8 is the worst Windows operating system that I have ever used. I used to have Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 and it's better than Windows 8 because they're all masterpieces.

Hate it, I tried it for a month then switched back to 7. I heard somewhere that 8 wasn't fully finished but it could just be someone being obnoxious.
