This CNN article sums it up pretty well-

http://money.cnn.com/2012/11/16/news/companies/hostess-closing/

A union strike forced them into bankruptcy. The one upside is their assets will be auctioned off which could result in another company making some of their products. 18,500 people will be unemployed, but at least Devil Dogs and Twinkies may survive

I'm kind of depressed about this, but at least some of the products may survive. I absolutely love the cupcakes and the store brand ones can't even begin to compare to the originals.

Yea I heard the news from talking to my dad and I couldn't believe it. My first thought was that I would miss their apple pies and twinkies, I doubt any other brand is better then Hostess in my oppinion. I never really paid attention to how much I liked the Hostess brand until now, hopefully the recipes will survive or can be sold to another company.

I've heard that the strikers are just a scapegoat and corporate mismanagement has been slowly ruining the company for a long time.

Anyway, we'd better stock up on Ding Dongs....

I was heart broken about this also even though I'm not a big pastry fan. I actually was staying up with my friend last night and we got into the conversation of Twinkies so we took a trip down the road and got some at the local 7-11. But there will still be Little Debbie's around and I like Zebra Cakes when I am in the mood for a processed pasty  That's still a huge bummer not because of the loss of a mass producing food product but the employees that will have to leave. I didn't read the articles but my idea when I  thought of it is a Union can only go so far and push so much then the heads of the company are just going to wipe their hands clean and just drop the hassle with what comes with their Union friction.

Never had one so i can't really complain or say that it doesn't bother me as i don't know.. by the tone of these messages though i can tell that they are a popular treat...... So sorry for your loss but look on the bright side you might try some other cakes to fill that hole where the hostess brand cakes used to be... Or maybe it makes dieting easier i dunno...

Though i do find the fact that Americans seem more bothered about cakes than the sudden outbreak of violence in the middle east....

We're too used to it. There's nothing "sudden" about that.

America thinks with it's stomach, this much is clear.

Like someone else mentioned, the company went under because of corporate mismanagement and the union is the scapegoat taking all the blame. One strike cannot bring a company as big as Hostess down.

In all seriousness though... their stuff isn't even that good. It hasn't been for a very, very long time, so I am not surprised or sorry to see them go.
