Super Mario Land for the Game Boy is a normal Mario 2D platformer game.
The gameplay is similar to the original Super Mario Bros. It was also one of the most successful Game Boy games ever created. To let you know, the only difference between this version and the original is that this one has COLOR! So it's basically the original game with color. Here's how the game goes. You're Mario, trying to get to the end of the level, like a normal 2d platform game. You pick up items like invincible stars, which makes you invincible for a short time, killing any enemy you come in contact with. Then there's the mushroom. With it, you become taller, can break certain blocks, and need to get hit twice to die. Then there's the 1-up mush- wait, it's a heart? Oh, OK, so the heart gives you an extra life. And finally, there's the new Fire Flower. It now not only kills enemies that it hits, but it also collects all the coins it touches. And the best part about it, (or maybe the worst) the fireballs haven't ever heard of gravity. Once the bounce on the ground, they will start flying up until it hits a ceiling, and would then come back down. It is very fun to use.

Graphics - 9.5  The graphics are the reason to play this game over the original. Mario looks like he did in Super Mario Bros. with little difference besides there are some color differences. All the enemies look very good also. I really liked the backgrounds as well, they looked very nice. And the color make the graphics look a lot more finished, but sometimes the color looks a little more like an add on, but that is what it is, anyway. All the mushrooms and the sphinx things look very good, and look like what they are.

Sound - 8
I really enjoy the music. Everything from the level music, to the invincible sounds. All the jumping was spot on, with no delays. However, I thought the underground level track seemed a little repetitive. But the song that is played at the first level gets stuck in my head practically every time I play this game.

Addictiveness/depth - 6
This game is very addictive. It only has four worlds with three levels each, but they are all fun to play. I don't know if this is a small game for the original Game Boy, but it seemed short. I do find myself coming back to this game a lot, because it is one of those games that is fun to play many times.

Story - 4
I don't know what the story is exactly, since I don't have the game, and the game doesn't explain it. But it won't matter, since it is the same thing as always, but now using different characters. This time, Daisy gets stolen by some thing that is evil, like a shape shifter or something, but I don't really know. But who cares about the story anyway? It doesn't matter in a game like this, so it won't upset you that you don't really know what's going on, because you just have to keep going right.

Difficulty - 7
Now, the game itself isn't all that hard. The level design is fairly average, but I found the controls hard to master. It seems like if you move a tiny bit more to one side, you will be right on the edge, but you will end up falling off. Something just seemed weird about how it controlled. This made the game more difficult.

Now to wrap things up, I'll say that this is one of my favorite games ever on the Game Boy. It feels like a Mario game, especially with the color added in this version. The new power up is very fun, and the level design, the gameplay, and the music all come together to make a very enjoyable experience. If you like Mario games, or 2d platformers, you should play this game. OVERALL - 9.4
