It's a terrible, terrible game. If you want a *good* NES game that has a Gothic setting, extreme difficulty, 2-D action, undead enemies and takes place in a castle, just play "Castlevania".

Speaking of which give me another month or so on the walkthrough. I've ditched the idea of including the second quest for three reasons. The first is, I admit, the second quest is hard and I've kind of given up. But also, there's a *reason* why nobody does second quest walkthroughs: because nobody plays the second quest of *anything*, except maybe "Zelda"! Nobody cares about the second quest, it's just padding. They added it to old games to create the illusion that they'd added something extra when it's just a few more enemies and a couple of hidden items. Finally, I'd essentially be writing the same walkthrough twice. I made it more than halfway through the second quest (almost to the end of block four) and not a lot is different.

Anyway, back to "Ghosts n' Goblins". The game reeks. The music has this awful, awful piercing quality to it and it's just the same few bars endlessly repeating throughout...the whole...game! The sound effects are just as abrasive, the map animation (which IIRC seems to happen every time you die) is unskippable and tedious, the atmosphere is not eerie so much as just unpleasant and miasmic somehow, and most of the weapons are useless, one-directional, visually uninteresting with their effects, and anything but fun to chuck. It always cracks me up that people say it's a bad game just because it's hard. You guys should be ashamed. It's a classic. Just because you happen to wuss out on the difficulty that's fine you are welcome to not like it, but don't say it's bad just because it's hard. That's lame. Keep in mind also that you are picking on the map fucntion and the sound of a game that WAS A PORT of a game and released in 1986. How many games back then had a map feature? Sound better than that? Sure you are welcome to your own opinion but it seems like you are picking on it because you aren't good at it. Just saying. I'm not trying to be rude. I just find it amusing.

I didn't see anyone in this thread say that the game was bad just because it's hard. I don't remember ever thinking it either. I'm getting very close to being able to pull off a no death run at "Castlevania" (and would've eventually even beaten the much harder third game too if my Wii hadn't stopped working--I had made it up to Dracula's final form). You spend nearly as much time listening to the boss music and cabin music, the latter of which is so awesome that fans like to do remixes of it.

Instead of having the Gothic charm of the "Castlevania" series or even the campy, tongue-in-cheek flavor of "Haunted House" for the 2600 it instead has the thick miasma of a bad fever hallucination. It just feels...nasty somehow, empty.

Why do you *need* a map feature anyway? Why do you need to spend ten seconds looking at the map every time you die? There were six levels, the layout was irrelevant and the map looked uninteresting! Why do the zombies have to wear pajamas? Is that supposed to be scary? Why does the game's every sound effect have to be some awful, grating squeak? And this was hardly a quiet game.

Its a hard game but its fun. Personally it plays better then most modern games. I prefer the sequel ghouls n' ghosts on the Genesis.
