Congrats to Vizzed for playing Sega CD games in a browser! It's amazing!!! Also, let's start with the good-- Sonic CD has gorgeous, pretty graphics and awesome music. So why the hate? Sonic the Hedgehog's mindless, unvaried gameplay consisting of running fast to the right, blind to the obstacles you might encounter unless you A) slow down and negate the only potentially fun part of the gameplay, or B)get lucky or C) played through the level before. Thank goodness for the ring system, so people could in theory get hit an infinite number of times and thus they may not be too shy about running fast, but still,... Sega today hobbles along as the joke as it is, while Nintendo is an industry leader. It is a sad reality that Sega thought it could shove its inferior Sega Genesis and Sonic mascot down the throats of gullible children by dishonestly tricking them into believing that Sega and the crappy games for its platforms were ever in the same league as the technologically superior, infinitely more entertaining games available on the Super Nintendo (Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, Final Fantasy, Star Fox, Metroid, etc etc etc). Even cross platform games like Street Fighter 2 absolutely suck on Sega's hardware, furthering the tragedy that people were dumb enough to buy a Genesis instead of a Super Nes. The Sega CD can improve the background music and SLIGHTLY improve the graphics, but the gameplay remains, brainless gameplay nowhere near the league of Super Mario World, a rich and varied game with surprises around every corner (riding a raft over a treacherous river of lava, fighting fire breathing rhinos supported only by a spinning ferris wheel of death over top of a pool of lava, engaging in exciting boss fights at the end of thrilling and varied Castle levels at the end of each world, etc etc etc). The positive reviews on this site for Sonic are a sad reminder of how gullible children were to Sega's insulting, dishonest ad campaign that tragically deprived so many children of the chance to own the infinitely superior hardware and software of the Super Nintendo and its game library. I'll agree with you that just running wildly isn't very fun, but I enjoyed the game at least. Comparing it to Mario is kind of hard, since so little can come even close to it. Maybe you could rate every category, from graphics to depth and difficulty. |

patar4097 : Thanks for the reply! Regarding the last sentence "maybe you could rate every category" I was a little confused what you meant because I did rate every category! I rated Sonic CD as follows: Graphics 9 Sound 10 Addictive 3 Story 6 Depth 5 Difficulty 6 You can find these ratings in my review on the Sonic CD game page here: https://www.vizzed.com/play/sonic-cd-scd-online-sega-cd-63680-game Is that what you meant or did you mean something else? Anyways, thanks again for the reply! This game was pretty fun. I understand what you said about the gameplay, but what I did not understand why you said that the Genesis is inferior. The Genesis actually had a lead in the market for a while back then. |

G@mehe@d : I was basing the superiority of the Super Nes over Sega Genesis on the basis of the hardware's capabilities for graphics and sound and technological specs like that, and also the superior games (although that latter argument is more arguable I still stick with it). Using who bought more of which system as a way to determine which system is better is shaky because there are more direct ways to rate the quality of a thing. In Kentucky more people voted for Romney than Obama but that doesn't mean that Romney isn't a lying sack of sleaze. lol I was basing the superiority of the Super Nes over Sega Genesis on the basis of the hardware's capabilities for graphics and sound and technological specs like that, and also the superior games (although that latter argument is more arguable I still stick with it). I'm sorry but... "Sonic the Dumbhog"
... Wow. Could you get any less original? ----- Moving onto the review... I'm kind of glad SEGA focuses on just making games now. Since they stopped making consoles, their games have been available on all major platforms, and this is preferable. I was a Genesis kid growing up, and I grew to really love Sonic the Hedgehog. You say it's mindless etc... isn't that the idea of a video game? To let your mind rest for a short period of time? I've had numerous fun hours playing various Sonic games, and as a result, have gotten quite good at some stages. I also find your numbers and your review itself contradictory. You gave it mostly high ratings except for Addictive and Depth. (Story is going to vary, because like most games from before, any game that isn't an RPG requires an amount of imagination to properly see the story.) You are also comparing Sonic to Super Mario World. Instead, why not view it on it's own? I find when we start comparing games to other games, we lose a grand scope of the game we are critiquing. This is just a suggestion of course, because while I respect your view, I do wish you saw the games and series in a more objective light. "The positive reviews on this site for Sonic are a sad reminder of how gullible children were to Sega's insulting, dishonest ad campaign that tragically deprived so many children of the chance to own the infinitely superior hardware and software of the Super Nintendo and its game library." OK, now you've completely lost that respect I had. Because when you talk down to people who prefer a system that was for a time very popular among a good deal of circles, you just look like a bit of a fool. It's like comparing a PS3 to a 360. I'm guilty of preferring the PS3, but one cannot ignore the games on the opposing console. It's stupid. Just like what you are doing with your diatribe about how Sega's Genesis was "inferior". I wouldn't say I'm deprived either. I've gone back to play SNES as well, and while good, I still prefer the Genesis and it's hardware. Plus, Sonic made platforming fun for a wave of gamers who didn't really catch on with Mario (like me) or those who prefered something more based on time than something based on simply getting from point A to point B. Whatever the case, I'm sorry you can't appreciate the game for what it is and insist on comparing it. ... Wow. Could you get any less original? ----- Moving onto the review... legacyme3 : Sorry about bashing the Sega audience, I sort of invited the counter-bashing my perspective... that having been said I sort of agree with the turn your mind off and play comment... I enjoy doing that with lots of games sometimes (in fact I wrote a review on this site using that exact perspective to defend Turbografx's Batman game---you can look it up!! lol). Strange as it may sound, the irrational bashing of the innocent fun of turning off the brain and enjoying the Sega Genesis was not intended to clash with the inevitable counter-arguments that were going to follow.. I guess I was naive but I sort of intended that the Sega defenders would simply say what they loved about the Sega without saying how much respect they lost for me because I did not phrase my original rant in a diplomatic way, the original rant was sort of intended in a spirit of fun, like shouting at the sky and shooting off my lament into the darkness of the interwebs, when debating with actual people I try to be much less condescending especially when it's possible to see videogames from equally valid, different perspectives while valuing different things and there is no need to get so serious? I feel like I'm making no sense so I will stop for now! The sound is a 10 for me but I have a gripe about music being different between regions aside from the Past levels. What was the point of that? The boss music I can probably understand. Work that Sucker to Death. |

legacyme3 : Not to get into an argument or anything, but you stated that you're glad the Sega is now focusing on the games instead of the consoles, but why do all the new Sonic games suck? I agree that it was a good idea to do that, but they haven't made a good Sonic game, from what I know of, in quite a while. legacyme3 : Not to get into an argument or anything, but you stated that you're glad the Sega is now focusing on the games instead of the consoles, but why do all the new Sonic games suck? vizzedguy124 :
All is a bit unfair. I'm a fan of Generations, which has been the best Sonic game since Adventure 2, and "some" people liked Colors, though it wasn't for me. SEGA has gotten lazy as a game developer unfortunately, and they've forgotten the concepts that made their original games popular. I'm a fan of the series, so I still look forward to each game, hoping it's a return to the form that I enjoyed as a kid. All is a bit unfair. bsnowotter : Although I would ultimately agree that Nintendo had the better library of games, it wasn't as if when the Genesis/MegaDrive was released that it was "inferior" Actually it was quite advanced compared to any of the 8 bit systems that were the estabished systems in 1988 and 1989. So I guess it's only drawback was that it had like a 3 year jump on the SNES.
I owned both Systems and Both systems had great games back then. Sega usually had the better Comic Book titles and SNES had the established Zelda Mario etc. In 1988-89 when the system was released to most of the world, it had wonderful games...and wondeful Arcade ports of many popular games. Games that just looked amazing compared to games like Super Mario Bros. 2. I will also note that when I first saw Sonic the Hedgehog being played on the Sega Genesis I was in AWE with how it looked. One of the biggest "Wow" moments I ever had playing games and I've been playing Video games since the Atari Days. I will also note that any fan of Mortal Kombat wanted to own a Sega Genesis...everyone knew back then that if you were a Street Fighter Fan you played on SNES if you were a MK fan you played on Genesis. There are things that you fail to mention with comparing the two. Sure, ultimately the SNES had better hardware than the Genesis but that's because of the fact that the Genesis was already like 3 years old when the SNES was released. I know that your post was one big troll on the site and I'm sure you think it's hilarious on how much you hate the Genesis. It's really not I owned both Systems and Both systems had great games back then.
