OVERALL RATING: 7/10

In this game, you play a magnificent chef setting out to build the best burgers you can!  You run through platform mazes to assemble the ingredients, but lo and behold, obstacles bar your way!  An overzealous hot dog, a covetous egg, and a marinating pickle are all determined to make sure you don't succeed!  Your job is to bury them under the weight of ingredients or stun them by dashing pepper into their eyes!  Once you've successfully dodged past the little deviants and built four burgers, you can progress to the next level.

GRAPHICS (4):
Let's face it.  In a game designed for arcades almost 30 years ago, I wouldn't expect Chef Pepper to look like Mona Lisa.  That being said, the enemy named Mr. Hot Dog gave me a few good laughs.  I couldn't decide if he was a silly little bean or a wiggly nondescript mass.  The only reason I knew his strange jiggly shape represented a hot dog was because I did some research on the game.

Concerning the graphics, my biggest disappointment probably came from the fact that the colors never changed.  The background, the ladders, and the enemies were always the same shade, and furthermore the pallet of colors was very limited.  As though few colors wasn't enough to make the screen a sight for sore eyes, all the colors chosen were fairly dark.  I can't imagine younger kids being attracted to the dampness of the screen.  It caused me to believe Chef Pepper was being chained away in a dungeon forced to slave his life away by assembling soggy buns.  (And this idea was perhaps accentuated by the fact that you 'squash' the buns to push them down to the next platform.)

There was also a bit of inconsistency in the floor colors.  Some ladders had a different color where they met the next platform while other stairs did not.  It's not a huge deal, but to someone who is OCD, I caught myself thinking that certain stairs were only one-way due to the color difference.

SOUND (4):
Though I'm unsure of whether or not this is the game's fault, the music was -ridiculously- quiet.  Even with my volume turned up all the way, I could barely hear it.  There also, of course, was VERY little variety of music, and what music existed was quite cheesy.  There's one little clip which plays on a loop, and it's in every way reminiscent of an arcade game.... you know: the little "boop dy boop dy... dunnneh dunneh.. boop dy boop dy" style.

The most interesting music probably takes place at the beginning of each level and lasts all of five seconds.

Also, the sound effects that occur when you squash a bad guy or knock an ingredient down are rather vague and dull: a vibrating 'thud'.  The sounds aren't even differentiated between enemy and ingredient.

Then there's one more sound clip which plays when you die, but it's no more impressive than the other bits.

I can't really complain though.  The simplicity of the sound in the game 'fits' in my opinion, considering the age and type of game.

ADDICTIVENESS (6):
I love little games like these.  True gamers can recognize the strategy that must be used in order to progress through the game since these types of games are all about making the highest score possible.  While it is true that every level ends once four burgers are completed, this is not the way to 'win' the game.

That being said, I do have a couple of beefs with this particular game which is what caused me to only give it a rating of 6 for this category.  First of all, there are only a certain number of enemies on the screen at a time.  This pretty much means that there IS a maximum score that can be reached. For example, if there are only four bad guys on the screen at any one time and I can lure all four onto each ingredient for maximum points.... well I can only get as many points as there are ingredients to drop.  Granted this is extremely hard to achieve, but I just don't like the idea of there being a level of points you cannot exceed. It would be preferable that more enemies crawled onto the screen the longer you avoided the current ones.  This would put your character in more danger while also giving the opportunity to score higher.

Second of all, playing this game puts me in a bit of a pickle.  You see, there are ONLY six levels.  Once you beat those six the game leads you back to the first one.  Not cool.  It'd be one thing if there was no max to the high score, but knowing that the sky is NOT the limit doesn't exactly encourage me to try again.

STORY (6):
I'm probably being a bit generous by rating the story with a 6.  In what kind of a world do chefs get chased around my man- slaughtering hot dogs, pickles, and eggs?  And why.... an egg?  I can see the hot dog having jealousy issues.  I can see the pickle wanting to be used more often.  But an egg?  I guess he's just not an easy- over.

Anyhow, realism aside, I thought the story was a bit cute.  A chef tries to build burgers while avoiding the clutches of lunging food.  What's not to love?

Besides, what more can you do for a story about a character stomping on bread and cheese?  I think the plot is pretty darn- tootin' acceptable.

DEPTH (3):
There really isn't much depth to any part of this game.  Even the burgers are on the flimsy side: one patty, one slice of cheese, a suspiciously puffy lettuce leaf, and ONE lousy tomato slice.

However, I give the game some credit for the sake of strategy.  I'll cover that in the section discussing difficulty though, since it's some food for thought.

DIFFICULTY (5):
If you play this game with the idea of a rushed lunch, you're missing out on what the game has to offer. Here is how the game plays out:

When the chef walks along the ingredient of a burger, it falls to the next level.  If it lands on top of an ingredient on the level below it knocks that ingredient down to the next lower level as well.  When all the ingredients have been dropped out of all platforms, a burger will be built along the bottom of the screen.  Building all four burgers wins the level.

However, while you run the maze, you must dodge the discontent hot dog, pickle and egg.  You can deal with them in four ways: scurry away in cowardice, throw pepper at their eyes, squash them with your massive burger pieces, or cause them to fall below your level while on top of an ingredient.

Causing the enemy to fall with a piece you have stomped down wins you the most points, and also causes that ingredient to fall much further down.  The more enemies on the piece, the further it will fall and the more points it will earn. Thus, the best way to build up your score is to put Chef Pepper in the most dangerous predicaments you can manage.  You want to -lure- the disgruntled ingredients after you before killing their hopes by causing the ingredient they stand on to fall.

Sometimes two enemies will come at you from separate directions and you must stun one or both of them with a dash of pepper.  However, I find that sometimes the button for this attack doesn't work, and what's worse, it seems to lag.  You also only get a few handfuls.  You can win more when you obtain bonus foods like coffee or ice cream, but that doesn't really happen very often and only seems to happen when you've dropped a certain number of ingredients.

Overall though, I did enjoy this game quite a bit.  I would only suggest it to those who are infatuated with older games however, and for those that have patience.  I really appreciate the simple games like this and I probably would have rated the game even higher had it not been for the slim SIX levels.  The game WAS pretty difficult, but I'd still liked to have kept going.  I can't imagine the game will help me become a Michelin chef, but it did help me burn a couple of hours!

Great review.

I've never played this version of Burger Time but I use to play the game for the Nintendo NES when I was younger.

There's actually a remake that released recently on the Xbox Live Arcade and I think the Playstation Network too.

Davideo7 : Aw thanks!

Yeah, there's one for the PS, I know, and according to my research there are a good dozen copies of it.  There's a version for the Apple II, for PS, for the XBox, and even for the TI-99/4a graphing calculator!

Singelli : Is the Playstation or Xbox version remakes? The remakes I'm talking about basically recreates the game with 3D graphics and a slightly different gameplay.

Davideo7 :    The ones I found were pretty much THE exact same game, but slightly different graphics and colors.  They even had the same platform maps and number of levels.  A few of them had just 'modernized' the graphics.

They were also given different names based off the system that got permissions to publish their own version.

Oh wow...
That looks quite breathtaking and just... totally awesome!  LOL

No, the re-makes I found were the exact same game, still 2-D with a one screen platform.

The remake looks like so much more fun.
