So a while back I remember that in 12th grade Psychology and we were discussing baby names (it was related to a topic, I just forget how) and while listening to some of the names, I couldn't help but feel kind of puzzled (for a lack of a better word) at what parents are naming their kids. I know that their are a lot of Jacobs, Davids, Michaels, Ryans, and Daniels (to name a few) growing up in high school; but kids named Pheonix, Gunner, Passion, and Blue are really far out their. I couldn't help but feel sorry for the kid becuase I know he is going be somewhat teased, bullied, and made fun of becuase of the name. I know that I should respect someone for what they name their child and to try and not to judge. I guess what I'm asking is; is their a "limit" on how unique a name should be for a child.
Also on a related note what is the most "unique" name you've ever heard? Oldschool41 : The only unusual names I've ever heard were people with names of season. Like Summer, Autumn, etc. I don't think there is anything wrong with parents giving their kids a unique name like that. Sometimes there are ones that go far out there but I know, from personal experience, that I have a really unique first name. Not too many people have my name. I kind of rather like being unique. |

SunflowerGaming : I agree with you that a unique name can really make a person stand out (in a good way) when meeting people. However I think what is a consern for me is names that are really far out there or names that are spelled wrong (example would be Michael spelled Mychael or David spelled Dayvyd). But all in all its like you've said I don't have any problems with parents naming their child something unique, just me worried how the child is going to go through life with a name that either... 1. Is hard to spell 2. Is hard to pronounce 3. People say is not a name 4. Calling the child names 5. Doesn't grow well on the child. I would like to get Singelli's opinion on this since she is a teacher and she might have had trouble pronouncing some names of her students. I wouldn't really like naming my child after a noun, like "Angel, Daisy," etc. But I wouldn't mind giving my child a unique name. Sairek, for example, is a very unknown name; but it's actually a real male name! I believe it's actually an Irish name. Oldschool41 : Yeah I can understand where you're coming from. It can be hard for a child having a really weird name. However, they can always legally change it when they're old enough. But I just feel bad that they would have to wait and go through the problems of being bullied because of their name. I think that's really sad, they didn't ask for that name, yet they can sometimes get a lot of flack for it. |

No i wouldn't name my child Pheonix nor Gunner. I think who ever did that should be ashamed of him or herself. I would name my child a normal name that haven't been much used like malcom. |

Wow, you really hit me close to home. Before my daughter was born, before we knew she was a girl, we were thinking of naming her Phoenix if he was a boy... Being named "Robert", I feel like giving your child a run-of-the-mill name is just dumb. I could never be the only one, I've never gone anywhere where I'm the only Rob. It's just impossible.
If you're going to name your child something like Jake, or Ian, Jessica or god forbid Dakota, you should just not be a parent. Get some originality. If you're going to name your child something like Jake, or Ian, Jessica or god forbid Dakota, you should just not be a parent. Get some originality. |

Lazlo Falconi : I'll admit Pheonix is a good unique name. But yeah we have too many Michaels, Davids, Jakes, Jessicas, and Emilys. Never really met a lot of Ians or Dakotas (might just be where I'm from) so I don't really associate them with Michaels. Lazlo Falconi : I'll admit Pheonix is a good unique name. Phoenix is an awesome name. If I had a kid named Phoenix, I would keep pushing him over just so I could afterwards yell out "Phoenix Down!"

Oy, boy could I give you some doozies! I live in an area of the country where it seems almost impossible NOT to come across crazy names! I think the worst I heard were pronounced "Luh-MON-gu-lo" and "Or-ON-gu-lo" (with the capitalized syllable emphasized). However, get this..: their names were literally Lemonjello and Orangejello. They were twins. What's wrong with these parents, that they do this to their kids? I think we live in a society where it's becoming less of an issue, but I still find it utterly ridiculous. Omg i love this. I finally get to share some weird names that people i know, have given their children. My sister in-law friend has named her son 'Flea'. Yes like the little thing your dog gets in his hair that causes him to itch. Funny right? Also my dads friend named her son 'Rowdy' get this, his dad is in jail...Ya i'm not gonna go into detail. Another friend of my dad's named their son 'Storm'. These are all rediculous and funny. But often i ask my self what i'm gonna name my kids and can't find anything i like so maybe these people had the same trouble ended up naming their kids rediculous things. |

Flea??!?! No way! That should just be considered cruelty! I didn't know the person specifically, but my students told me about a child they knew called s***head, except that the 'th' was pronounced like the 'th' in the word 'the'. Apparently, the parent was drunk when giving birth. -.- Now imagine a poor teacher going through her rollsheet.... I think the "S**head" thing is an urban legend.... http://www.snopes.com/racial/language/names.asp I could give you a whole list of them from my various lists in my journal. But I do know a sibling duo named Golden (boy) and Sylver (girl) ... their mom is named Moni! http://www.snopes.com/racial/language/names.asp I could give you a whole list of them from my various lists in my journal. Wwwoooow. LOL. That's horrible! As for the urban legend thing, it may be so, but my students -say- they knew someone with that name. It doesn't make it true though I understand. However my sister DID know a Lemonjello and Orangejello, so I'm very surprised they're listed on that site! O.o That means it's happened more than once perhaps... oh dear! klemish : Flea is just terrible. I can only imagine him running and people say "Flea is Fleeing" lol. I thought Rowdy and Storm are decent names; I mean you can call him the nickname Ro/Row/Rowd if Rowdy doesn't cut it for ya. Flamesterette_X: Golden sounds to close to Holden from The Catcher in Rye that's my only compalint about that name. Sylver looks too masculine for a girls name. klemish : Flea is just terrible. Lazlo Falconi : I kind of agree with you there. I've been cursed with a common name of David, the only thing that makes me stand out is my last name of Auchampach which is incredibly rare.
Because of my common name, and because I like originality, my wife and I have given our kids less common names. Our daughter's name is Naomi (not very common) and our son's name is Dauntez (very rare). If we have another son, we might potentially name him Neomiah. If my wife let me, I honestly would come up with my own names. I've always been good at coming up with unique words and names and I'd come up with a name that no one else in the world has.
