Does anyone mountain bike?  I used to mountain bike in Alaska, and I miss it terribly.

If you mountain bike, where do you go?  What's your favorite place?  And what kind of a bike do you have?

I never did mountain biking, but I did ride my bike around my town just for the fun of it.

BNuge :

That's not really on topic. This thread should be specifically about mountain biking. Any random biking stories that don't fit into the topic should be posted in another thread, such as this one.

So no one mountain bikes huh?  Is this due to a lack of interest, or a lack of appropriate landscapes, I wonder?

I had a mongoose mountain bike and that thing was the best quality bike I've ever owned.  It was SUPER sturdy while also maintaining a VERY light weight.  I managed to keep it for almost ten years, but then I got hit by a car.  Surprisingly the frame was still in tact, the the wheels were bent to heck.  At the time, the guy I was dating and his father spent about six hours trying to straighten the spokes and rim of the tires.  They never worked properly though, and I had to bid my loved bike a sad adieu.

I like to go mountain biking, I have an Emmelle Cheetah Mountain Bike and I love to go off-road with it every chance I get
I use it to ride almost anywhere (including going to play badminton and football) but there's nothing better than going where there is no-one else - Alaska must have been amazing
Please don't tell me that you threw away your mongoose frame - I've had a number of things go wrong with my mountain bike but so long as the frame is ok (most times it is as they are very well designed)
I crashed into a crash barrier avoiding a lorry and I was able to get home but the back wheel was buckled
So I got another mountain bike from someone who was throwing theirs away and I took the back wheel from it (after checking it was the same size and had the same number of gears as the original) , put my inner tubes and tyres on it and replaced it
It was as good as new
Recently, the right shimao gear grip shift cracked, then shattered so I took the corresponding shimao gear grip shift from the other bike and replaced it
After some adjustment, it was as if I hadn't replaced it, in fact it was better as it gave me a chance to tighten up the brakes too
So I hope you didn't throw it away as I believe you could make a fine bike out of it again
And I hope you were ok when you were hit by the car

Destifen :  I am in COMPLETE agreement with you: nothing is better than riding off where there are no people.  I could do that for hours and hours.... days if I could get away with it.  It's so peaceful and just... Wow.

Sadly, I did throw my bike away.  It's one of the things I regret the most, as I have yet to find another one of its quality.  I was also emotionally attached to it, but during some difficult aspects of my life I cleaned house and figured I'd never get it fixed.  (I'm a bit silly and shy, and I don't like asking about things that might make me look stupid.)

I wish I had kept it.  I have a bit more confidence now, and I would have sought help for getting it fixed.

And amazingly, I was not hurt.  A guy in a red car was making a right turn and I saw his blinker.  I also happened to see that he wasn't looking my way or checking the road in both directions.  Instead of trying to go behind him though, I took faith that he would look and RIGHT as I started to cross in front of him, he made his turn.  (It probably goes without saying that he never did look both ways). Well, since I had been watching his head, I was able to jump of my bike in this weird little skirmish.  The bike went under the car, but only my leg was hit.  The car tire basically took off a lot of my skin, and I was bleeding like mad but more concerned about my bike.  (I told you, I was emotionally attached to the thing!)  I started crying and I was like "You're on my bike! You're on my bike!"

The guy was literally freaking out after he got out of his car, with wide eyes and asking "Oh my g** are you okay?!?!"  I just kept answering: "You're on my bike!!!!  Get off my bike!"

LOL  It was such a sad moment.

When you are cycling in the city you have to be so alert and aware, it's a state of mind a motorist cannot achieve basically because they are almost "indoors" as opposed to being outside in the real world, so to speak
Your incident reminds of a movie I saw last week called Premium Rush which is about cyclist messengers in New York
The main character doesn't use gears or brakes (which I think is crazy) and during the film he is involved in a crash and is only concerned with his bike despite bleeding profusely, very like what happened to you
Another cycling movie I relate to is 127 Hours, I've managed to crash in the middle of nowhere and have had to walk home more than 10 miles after a puncture too many times, the last time it was a two inch screw that went clean through both sides of my inner tube, rendering it irreparable
I find I love my bike even more now after building, rebuilding and repairing it, it's just so personal to me now
Starting to sound a bit soppy now
I hope you can find another bike like the one you lost
