I'm going to be starting a horror role-playing game for some friends. If I can get a copy, I'll be using the Chill game. If not, I'll go with Beyond the Supernatural.

I'm having a hard time choosing between two different settings in which the game will take place. Therefore, I decided to see what you, the worthy of the Vizzed forum, have to say.

Which would you find more frightening, being trapped on a haunted ship, or being trapped in a haunted skyscraper? If you're so inclined, feel free to explain why you would find your choice to be the more frightening, and don't be afraid to give me suggestions for story ideas.

For any ideas I like and use, I'll name an npc after the person who gave me the idea. So, here's you're golden chance to be famous amongst people you don't know!

Thank you kindly, and good gaming.

I'm gonna have to go with haunted skyscraper. At first I was like, haunted ship for sure. Because there's the whole dark fog, black waters, complete and utter isolation factors going for it. But haunted skyscraper, I just picture lots of vacant office buildings and cubicles, big open windows with moonlight pouring in and moving eerie shadows around, slamming doors when you go into a room, furniture covered in sheets and having something moving under one of them, etc. Also I don't know much about this game obviously but depending on how far you wanted to take it, you could escape to a dingy alleyway or something scary and expand from there if you were so inclined.

An office building would be scarier.  If you were cut off, blocked off, and couldn't get out at all, that's worse than a boat.  A ship would be sailing around but you could fine life rafts, signal other boats, or jump.  An office tower offers elevators that may fall at any second, different types of rooms and buildings.  You could have it in a place where there's the basement, with boilers and mechanical equipment and you're walking around with only a flashlight and all the plumbing and pipes and scary dark corners are begging for bad guys.  You have a main lobby that's wide open with a fountain and large planters like a mall.  You have stairwells that you can look down a few floors and see monsters coming up at you.  You can have open areas or cubicles that hide creatures.  Some offices can have locked doors but they have glass windows so you could be hiding behind a desk while you're being hunted.

You can also have things like gyms and fitness centers, so you have weights and equipment as weapons.  You can have no windows that open and the big steel gates cover the doors so unlike a boat, you have no escape.  You can do a 10 floor building with a roof access that you have to figure out how to open.  Escape would be jumping or somehow getting to another roof.

A tall building offers more.  Plus, everyone's done a haunted ship.  That's old news.  An office building, dark, with moonlight pouring through the windows, would be something everyone recognized.  It'd be made scarier because it's less exotic and something that could happen now.  Heck, you do a thing where a group of religious terrorists hold a building hostage and try to raise the dead.  And they succeed.  And everyone's locked in.

Have fun!
