Super Mario Bros X is a 100% free fan game created by Redigit, knuckles96 and a bunch of other people.  There is no basic flow for the game itself, you play levels and pass them in certain ways.  Like SMB3 end level box and ? Orb, Super Mario World moving bar and Key hole, SMB2 sparkling crystal, SM64 star, defeated boss and beat to go back to map.   And the levels can have secrets that can open up alternate paths on the map screen.

You can be able to pick 5 characters in the game all from the Mario series except for 1.  They are:  Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad and Link.  All the characters have different mechanics in the game.  Mario and Luigi do it Super Mario World style where they can put reserve items to use for later, die when they get hit when small, ride Yoshi and pull tufts of grass from the ground.  Toad and Peach have the style of SMB2 where they don't have a reserve slot but they have hearts.  There are 3 hearts and they can be increased by a mushroom or a power up and decrease by damage to them.  Peach can glide for a short time and Toad has a high speed.  The death happens when the last heart is gone after a hit. 

Link has his style from The Legend of Zelda II The Adventure of Link. His health like Toad and Peach, but he has his own way of playing.  He has a sword that can kill enemies as an alternate of jumping on them. There's a shield that can be raised or lowered for projectile protection.  He cant grab tufts but he can cut them to give him rupees.  When you play as link instead of coins that will appear, there will be rupees instead.  There's 3 kinds of rupees:  Green=1, Grey=5 and Red=20.  He can also carry keys and bombs as a reserve for when he grabs them with his sword. 

Then comes the power- ups that the 5 characters can use.  The items are:  Mushroom/Heart container, Fire Flower, Ice Flower, Tannoki Leaf and Suit/Yellow Amulet and Hammer Suit/Black Amulet.  The /'s is when how it looks when you play as Link.  And every character uses the items very differently. 

Mario, Luigi, Toad and Peach shoot out balls when having a fire flower or ice flower.  Link however shoots balls from his sword whenever he attacks.  In tannoki leaf, Mario and Luigi can hover, tail whip and fly upward when stars come from behind when they run.  Same can go for Peach, Toad and Link except Link can't tail whip but the others have extra features.  Peach can be able to glide more longer, Toad can double jump and Link and jump then press jump again to turn into a fairy for a short time.  And in tannoki suit, everyone can turn into statues.  In hammer suit,  Mario and Luigi throw hammers, Peach throws heart bombs, Toad throws a boomerang and Link does a piercing beam.

 There's also others items the characters can use like:  Yoshi, bombs, shells, kuriboh shoe, vegetables,  Venus trap, bullet bill shooter, grab blocks, POW blocks, Propeller Block/Flamethrower, Trampoline, bomb and koopa clown car.  Mario and Luigi are the only ones that can use Yoshi and there's 8 colors each with different techniques.  What they do are:
Green

- No special effects
Blue

- May fly for short bursts if carrying something in its mouth.
Yellow

- Creates a STOMP effect on landing if holding something in its mouth.
Red

- Will turn shells into fire balls when they are spit out.
Black

-  Has all of the abilities of the RED,

PURPLE and BLUE Yoshi's at once.
Purple

- Allows for holding down to STOMP and break blocks below.
Pink

- All swallowed enemies become vegetables when spit out again.
Teal

- All spit enemies become ice blocks that slide until hitting something.

There's also 3 kinds of Kuriboh shoes and they are:  Green-The most basic shoe, Red-Allows walking on lava and 2 fireballs come out when you stomp an enemy and Blue-Infinite Flying.  There's also 2 kinds of bombs that are the enemy and fuse bombs.

If you think only 1 person can have the fun, think again cause 2 players can play this.  The 2 player mode has a smart camera that splits and reforms when the players get too far.  And they go all out in battle mode where you need to drop your opponent's life count to 0.

So far 1.3 is the version that so far is the most recent since Nintendo sued them for the game.  And for the Nintendo people let me just say that everything for this game is copyrighted to you Nintendo so that you can understand that.  And Nintendo, I can comprehend on why you sued them because I just play it I'm not a part of the staff and I greatly enjoy all your work for every game you have created.

I'm fairly certain that this is a game created with RPG Maker - I first thought it was a rom hack. I don't play many of those RPG Maker games, but this one seems interesting.

As some know, I have a playthrough of this game in my Youtube, so yeah, I like this game. Its a nice hack, too bad the creators got sued by Nintendo and had their website taken over by Nintendo. It was a good game. Good thing there's still download links floating around.

I have actually played that game. It is an awesome game with a lot of things from Mario's history ( and link's as well.) the hammer thing was kind unexpected, but I totally love that feature!  Nintendo should take a hint from the website/makers of the game. I wish I could meet the creators of the Mario and just say, " Hey! Look at this! Why aren't you doing this!? This is why sonic is going father than you!....in my opinion." but as I was saying, the super Mario Bros X is by far the greatest Mario fan game I have ever played. Family and friends should get a laptop and buy laptops just to play the game itself. Speaking of which, there is only one suggestion I have for the game. With so many levels in the amazing game, its kind difficult to play it alone. While having the two player mode is rather epic, it would be even better if the creators allowed the game to have wireless Internet options so people can play with each other so that it could possibly even be Four players! Five is good too... 
also, there is another thing that I think would've made the game better. If one is familiar with the Mario RPG series, Mario & Luigi, and the  popular but cancelled sprite series Super Mario brothers Z, then they would probably agree that those kinds of sprites should have been used in the game. The SNES/GBA Mario sprites were good, but as we've seen in Mario & Luigi and Super Mario Brothers Z, they are totally inferior in comparison. Seeing those kind of sprites knocking out gammas and burning kepi's with fireballs would have been so much more better.
Nonetheless, the game is interesting and could possibly be released on something like Wiiware or something. Link's cameo was pretty cool too, but unlike the other characters, he does not have a grab button, nor does he have a normal climbing action like everyone else; rather, he turns into a fairy and climbs up the ladder/vine instead.  he also can't pick up items from the ground, which means that some hidden keys, entrance's, and key factors of the game can't even be reached. So sadly, he isn't as entertaining as the other four game characters.
But since I've focused on one character, I might as well explain my opinion on the other characters. Along with link, the game consists of four other characters: Mario of course, Luigi, peach--who has only been helpful on an adventure since Super Mario Brothers 2 and  Super princesses peach, and Her faithful servant, the mushroom boy toad. Mario and Luigi are well-rounded characters. They're signature jumping never disappoints, and with the alternate jump button, they're spin jump adds a little twist to the fun.  they also have the ability that every character from the Mario Bros 2 game had---the ability to pick up plants, items, and other things from the ground when granted access.  when on a hill, the Mario brothers have the power to slide down on the hill and crash into enemies without taking damage themselves. Overall, they're the same red-and-green plumbers that are ready to thwart King Kip browser's plan.  Princesses Toadstool,known much more by her name peach, jumps off the role of playing the helpless dams ail in distress and joins the bros in the journey to stop Bow ser. In addition to jumping and running like Mario & Luigi, she also has the ability to float in the air for a brief period of time. This is very useful when she has no power ups and needs to get to a location that requires a little boost in the air. However, her ability to sit and slide like the brothers is not active. But she makes up with it by having three life hearts. If she gets attacked or damaged, then along with losing her ability when using one, she loses one heart. If all three hearts are gone, she loses a life. But the powers she receives refill her heart meter...bar.... uh.....meter-bar.~also, as weak-small peach, she can still crouch, unlike the Mario bros.   The mushroom character Toad is  like the Mario bros. And peach combine. He has the jumping power and speed like Mario & Luigi and has the three hearts like peach. He really has no other powers or abilities other than the power ups he collects just like the other characters. So I really have nothing to say.... Oh yeah!~ when he carries an ice or fireball, he has the ability to keep the ammo for as long as he wishes until he finds the desires target and flings it at it/him/her.
The characters of super Mario bros. X are truly good decisions, even adding link as a guest star. But this game cannot be complete without its power ups. Fire flower, ice flower, hammer suit, raccoon suit, tank suit, invincibility star, and so many others as well as the original mushroom all have various items that make the characters stronger. The raccoon/tank suit allows the characters to fly in the air for a good amount of time and whip your enemies with tails. If one wields the tank suit however,  s/he is granted the ability to turn into a statue. And if one acc quires the fire flower, they have the ability to shoot their enemies with fireballs, and with ice the ice flower, the player can shoot foes with ice balls, causing them to freeze and letting the ability to do whatever they want, such as  throw, toss, kick, and even use as stepping stones. Furthermore, time to time, the green dragon known as yoshi will be available to ride on. When riding yoshi, the character can eat  enemies, fruits, and even other players and can either spit them out or swallow them whole. If spat out, different things may happen. Sometimes you may spit fire, or you may spit out the same thing you attempted to eat. Sometimes the creature can even grow wings and soar into the skies, taking the game to new heights.

Wait, wasn't I just saying that this game was awesome when I played it.... didn't think I'd be doing a review. Well, with that said, I would like to say that super Mario Brothers X is an amazing game that people who have been fans of the old school Mario should play. That is all...
