Most of the time, but on my current game on Emerald 386, I will nickname every single Pokémon. None of them will be relevant to the Pokémon either. Mudkip=Sandwich, Charmander=Mango, and Pikachu=McDonald's! But some I always do, no matter what Pokémon game. Like, I have never played a Pokémon game without my Geodude being nicknamed Bigfoot.

I sometimes give them nicknames, and when I do, its either a pun name based on their typing and how they look. Or even human names. I only give nickname to them when I play the main series Pokémon games. Just a shame that they are a little boring...Please don't kill me!

Ideally, I would like to name all of my Pokemon after people they remind me of... though the problem with that is if I do it for one, I'd hafta do it for all... which means that limits me to only catching Pokemon that remind me of someone. That's a little easier as the series goes on and adds more options, but I definitely can't do it in gen1. I don't think it really works out for me until at least Sapphire. By then I can probably find 10-15 Pokemon that I can name after people.

I've also begun doing the same thing recently with Touhoumon. I'm not sure if that'll work out any better, but I'm hoping.

What I nickname them is sometimes random names that come to mind, sometimes I already have a name in mind. For instance, I always name a Hoothoot/Noctowl Juners in memory of my grandmother who always loved owls.

Yes i do i think it makes the game more interesting to name your pokemon because if u dont like their name u can name them something cool for example i named my charmander flamer because of its flame abilities another good example i think would be like fang for poochyena because its like a wolf and it uses bite

I usually just name some of Pokemon on my team and a few random Pokemon.
Most times, they're just random names that fit them like my Zebstrika named Bolt but I have a few Pokemon named after close friends and classmates or sometimes characters from other series.
In Pokemon Black though, I named a couple of Pokemon after their Japanese names.

Oldschool41 : Imo, most people do it because Pokemon are shown similar as pets, and that the Pokemon aren't named yet. As far as I can tell, their 'names' they come with are just the name of their species/breed, much like animals in our world.
