http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/apr/14/federal-agency-warns-of-radicals-on-right/

"A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines "rightwing extremism in the United States" as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority.

"It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," the warning says. "

Apaprently now being part of a group that opposed abortion, immigration or the over-reaching of federal power makes you extremist.

I'm sorry but aren't the buzzwords in this article no different than the rhetoric that Bush used to start the War on Terror? Fear-mongering in order to keep a dissenting group quiet. Sounds like a dangerous place to go in a "free democracy" like the United States. I wonder how long it will take for the fairness doctrine to kick in and make it nearly impossible to be right of center anymore.

Actually, there are a few extremist groups out there. You can be opposed to abortion or immigration and that is just fine, but when groups start physically attacking people for having different views then it becomes a problem. I've seen the Minutemen group... you know, the group of crazy white guys that feel that it is their right to go down to the Mexican border and shoot anyone they see crossing it that isn't white. They are on level with the KKK in their thinking. Then there are the anti-abortion people that firebomb abortion clinics... most recent one I remember was in Albuquerque in 2007.

A report prepared by the California Senate showed that abortion clinics in the state were torched and bombed more than in any other state: 30 incidences out of 224 crimes nationwide. Most of the clinics responding reported threats, vandalism, assaults, blockades and other crimes from 1995 to 2000. 30% reported that their personnel were "stalked, harassed, threatened and otherwise targeted at their homes or in other places away from clinics and medical offices." Other states with large numbers of attacks are: Florida with 19, Texas with 14, New York with nine.

The report analyzed from 1995-2000, before the conservative upswing during the Bush years. I'm trying to find more current data... but seriously, people have DIED. It has been a problem for a long time but nothing has been done about it. I live in California, I've seen this s*** on the news all the time.

And be honest, if there was a "Fairness doctrine" you couldn't be left of center either.

The bigger part of this is that they are worried about increase in violence and power of such groups because of the economy, anger over the war, and racists pissed off that our new president has dark skin. There are problems here. In case you all forgot, they arrested two guys who were planning to assassinate Obama! How can you remember that and not say that there is a possible threat? Extremists are bad, it doesn't matter which side they come from. I'm sure that if they had put out a warning about "left-wing radicals" that you would be agreeing with it and have no problem, but since you consider yourself right-wing you are up in arms about this. However, since you are not a radical extremist toting an AK-47, then I think you are fine... at least I hope you're not a radical extremist toting an AK-47... if you are, then let me know so I can run and hide.

yeah, it seems that you're pretty offended by this even though it doesn't really apply to you. Just because it says "right wing" doesn't mean you need to be annoyed about it. I mean like Elara said, people have died and there have been threats and vandalism cases with these people responsible.

Also, I'm not sure if you saw any videos of Palin rallies on the campaign trail where the crowd was shouting "death to Obama!" like fans in a sports stadium (let's use Lincoln Financial Field in Philly) would shout "let's go Eagles!" Those people are a problem and a threat

The warning is saying 'there are right wing extremists based around these ideologies, heads up', NOT 'all right wingers are extremists with these ideologies', a major difference.

And the report is actually needed, as there are several small scale but quite extreme secession groups across the country, and the federal agents should be aware of them.
