Many of us gamers know the bit count for a few systems:
NES: 8-bit
SNES: 16-bit
Turbo-Graphx 16: 16-bit(duh)
PSX: 32-bit
Lynx: 16-bit
N64: 64-bit(yet another duh)
Dreamcast: 128-bit
PS2: 128-bit
Xbox: 128-bit
GC: 128-bit

But just how many bits are the Wii, PS3, and 360? The answer may suprise.

Wii: 128-bit
360: 128-bit
PS3: 128-bit

The bit count hasn't increased, however, the graphics processors have greatly increased.

PS: If anyone knows the bit count of the game boys(all of them) please tell me. Thanks.

Actually, despite what the name says the N64 is actually a 32-bit system.

Nintendo just went "Oh hey, we'll combine our sound and video bits and call it 64!" like little cheaters.

wait, then whys it powered by a SGI 62.5 MHz 64-bit RCP GPU?
doesnt matter, i read that its named for its 64-bit CPU, not the GPU anyway.

also dont know if its relevent, but for example the ps3 uses 256 MB of GDDR3 video memory.

also, technically the xbox and GC were 32 bit systems with different processors.

so it all depends on how you are defining "bit"

The CPU is 64-bit with a core clock speed of 93.75 MHz. It is connected to the rest of the system through a 32-bit data bus.

N64 has the bottleneck syndrome.

Apsham: thanks. Wow, I thought the GBC was about 12 bits... i also thought that the GBA was about 24 bit. I couldn't have been more wrong

Everyone: Oh my god! I have no idea what you're talking about...i thought i knew a lot about this stuff. All this GDDR3 and MHz... I am so confused. I get CPU is computer and GPU is Graphics Processor Unit... I just don't get GDDR3 and MHz.

Also, there are a lot of dirty little secrets out there in the gaming world. They said that all 3 last-gen consoles were 128-bit. I'm shocked that the Xbox was 32 bit considering it looks better than all the other consoles...that's probably because they had more time to prep it before release.

And, I'm shocked that the N64's graphics are 32-bit. I always thought that the graphics are 64 bit. That would explain why the DS looks better than the N64...

GDDR3 stands for Graphics Double Data Rate 3, and it's basically just a more power efficient graphics processor shipped with the Playstation 3, although its also in the 360 and Wii.. the 360 is using it a bit different, instead of just graphics.. the 360 is using it for general purposes as well.

MHz is just a measurement of hertz... megahertz as it would be. In short, cycles per-second.

i´m confused...the n64 is a 32 bit console? i thought that it was a truly 64bit console unlike the atari jaguar which they said that was 64 bits too but in reality where only two 32 bit units glued together, i don´t know anything anymore...the psp is a 32bit system too? or is a 128 bits console?
