The Los Angeles Lakers reached an agreement late Thursday to acquire the Orlando Magic’s all-star centre Dwight Howard
in a four-team, eight-player, multi-draft pick blockbuster deal in which Andrew Bynum lands with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Los Angeles Times confirmed with several NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. Pau Gasol, however, won’t be a part of the deal, according to the executives, and will remain with the Lakers. The complex deal calls for the Denver Nuggets to send forward Al Harrington and guard Arron Afflalo to the
The Lakers, 76ers and Nuggets will all send the Magic protected first-round draft picks, the executives said. http://www.thestar.com/sports/basketball/nba/article/1239931--dwight-howard-headed-to-l-a-lakers-report ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, as a Sixers fan, I am ecstatic. We finally have a top caliber big man to build around, who is young, with a huge upside. The last time we were in such a position was with Moses Malone, and the '84 championship team. Bynum will have the chance to be ''THE MAN'' in Philly and no longer lurking in the shadows behind Kobe's brilliance. JRich is also a nice addition as he may be getting older but still is a feared scorer with a nice spot up jumper. Overall though, I think every team in this deal benefited immediately, besides the Magic. But they added some nice young pieces to build around in Harkless and Vucevic, and also the future 1st round picks, which could possibly bring in your franchise guy. So they will go into rebuilding mode now that they parted ways with Dwight. Iguodala will thrive in Denver playing in the fast paced tempo of George Karl's offense and they have sorely needed his defensive skills. He will also re-unite with pure PG Andre Miller who he liked playing with in Philly. The Lakers will now be a real championship threat as well with Nash and D12 pairing up with Kobe and Gasol. When has that franchise ever gotten the sour deal of a trade? Great move by all involved honestly.
Lakers - get Howard, obviously the point of the deal, so they instantly win. Not only that but they DO keep Gasol... only really lose Bynum... who wouldn't have a place in LA with Howard AND Gasol. However... this trade sucks if they can't convince him to resign. Bynum had a better chance of resigning... gamble, let's see if it pays off. 76ers - I'm mixed on this. Igs was a great scorer, but so is Bynum. And Bynum is something they needed... a dominant big man. They were the 8 seed last year, and this probably makes them a 6 seed. Problem will be resigning him. Losing the pick sucks for them, but this is their way of saying they want to win now. Nuggets - Give up in essence nothing for their first good SF since Carmelo. They got the best part of this deal honestly... Al Harrington is quite overrated. Igs isn't. He's very good, and this change of scenery should benefit him. As for the Magic... They confused me, but still got a pretty decent deal. There was an offer with the Nets to acquire Brook Lopez among other talents, and I thought they should have done that one... however, they still get something this way. They got tons of young talent including Harkless, and they also get 3 draft picks... very sexy deal for them... Could have gotten more, but just ridding themselves of Dwight "The Diva" Howard, they win. Winners everywhere. Lakers - get Howard, obviously the point of the deal, so they instantly win. Thanks for your input man. The good news for Philly is that they will have a ton of free cap space freed up after next season to offer Bynum a max contract. And the fact that he grew up in Plainsborough NJ, (1hr away from Philly) certainly improves the chances of him re-upping. Perhaps we will be strong challengers against your Celtics for the Atlantic division crown . I think initially Gasol was also in the trade talks of going to Orlando, but they must not have wanted to get stuck with his huge contract if they're planning a lottery rebuild. Oh ya, the first game of the 76ers season will have the Denver Nuggets coming to town too, lol. A bit ironic there, but hopefully everyone gives Iggy a huge standing O. |

Wait, wait, wait, wait. You're a Philly fan and you're excited? You gave up a pick and Iguodala for a center who won't get help and JR. Iguodala is a perfect guard who can step up and play the 3 spot, can defend okay, and scores. Bynum has no one else in the front court so he'll be doubled up and you lost a pick. I think the Nuggets made out like bandits. They should be much stronger. Now only if the Pistons can figure something out. Wait, wait, wait, wait. You're a Philly fan and you're excited? Well, let's break down the more important part of the trade: The new team that matches us with the Heat in the finals (probably, and by break down, I mean say who has the better players per position). PG: Steve Nash v. Chalmers. Nash is obviously the better player. SG: Kobe Bryant v. Dwayne Wade. Kobe Bryant still has more scoring power than Dwayne Wade has. SF: MWP v. LeFake James. Seriously, MWP? LeBron obviously is the better player (as shown by his MVP awards). PF: Pau Gasol v. Chris Bosh. I list Chris Bosh as a PF because that is supposed to be his position, but I think they played him center as well. I'm going to say tie on this one, mainly because I believe they impact their team in similar ways. Center: Dwight Howard v. Whoever it is, they still won't match up to Dwight. Period. So, by my count, I have the Lakers with the better starting lineup, and I think they will get another title this year. PG: Steve Nash v. Chalmers. Nash is obviously the better player. warmaker : Well, as much as it is sad to see Iggy go, his legacy in Philadelphia lasted 8 years, and it was time to move on. We now added arguably the best center in the game besides Dwight. How would I not be excited? And we will still have options on offense as Holiday, Nick Young, JRichardson are all guys who could be lethal on offense once they get hot. I can't wait for the season to start. I'm also hoping to see Moultrie step up and earn the PF position by the end of the season. Watch the dude playing for Miss in College, and you can tell that he's going to be a baller. |

Stockton90 : Jason Richardson lethal on offense? He scores maybe 15 a night, barely, the last couple of years. He's a defensive guy. I wouldn't expect many buckets from him. I watched him at Michigan State. Great on defense, he just shoots stand-up. There's no touch. But, hey, be excited. My guys aren't doing anything. Stockton90 : Jason Richardson lethal on offense? mlb789 : On paper, the Lakers look like a dominant team that could possibly challenge the Heat for the title. But we will have to wait and see if the team chemistry and cohesiveness will also be there to bring out the best in everybodies game. As you know, Kobe and Dwight are both ''Alpha'' personalities who will want a lot of touches and to be the man. In 2004, the Lakers were absolutely stacked when they added hall-of-fame talent in Gary Payton and Karl Malone - but guess what - they lost in the finals that year to a Detroit Piston team with borderline all-stars who just played way better as a team. I bet warmaker has positive memories about that year. warmaker : JRich is getting older now (31) so he doesn't have the same explosiveness he had earlier in his career. Overall though, he is still an excellent 3-point scorer and able to score in many different ways. In his career he averaged over 20ppg 3 times, so that should speak volumes of his scoring abiltity when put in the right situations. He is a career 37% 3pt shooter which is pretty damn good. The Pistons should be happy with drafting Drummond, I think the dude has potential to be very good. Any other moves they make this summer? warmaker : JRich is getting older now (31) so he doesn't have the same explosiveness he had earlier in his career. Wow the Orlando Magic lost this trade big time. Clear winners are the other 3 teams in the trade. Denver now adds Iguodala, who is a versatile forward that can do just about everything and fits the Nuggets run and gun style. The 76ers get the 2nd best Center in the league who may very well become the best center in the league in a few years. The 76ers haven't had a dominant big since Moses Malone so this is clearly a win for them. The Lakers now have a defensive anchor in Howard to make up for Nash's defensive shortcomings. Everyone wins except the magic, who will be rebuilding until they get another #1 pick just to get another dominant center, who will eventually leave them. |

ericni91 : Haha yeah, you know what's up. I noticed in the other NBA thread, that you're a Lakers fan... I'll be looking forward to the Bynum - Howard match-up, when the teams first meet. Let's just hope that they will both stay healthy and have the full potential to be productive for our teams. I got a question for ya though... Do you think there will be any conflict in Lakerland in regards to Kobe and Dwight both wanting to be ''the man'' and focal point of offensive sets? |

Stockton90 : No, I think that if there will be any conflict on the Lakers, it will be between Kobe and Steve Nash and/or Mike Brown. I don't really think there will be any conflict between Dwight and Kobe since Dwight really isn't the type of player who holds the ball and backs his man down. Dwight mainly scores off of plays like pick and rolls. With Pau and Dwight, the Lakers now have two of the best pick and roll big men in the league, and Nash is (in my opinion) the best pick and roll point guard in the league. So if Dwight is scoring a lot, it will be because Nash is holding the ball and making passes to him, not because Dwight is holding the ball for the entire 24 seconds. So, I think the Lakers have a decision to make on whether they want to play a pick and roll centered offense with Nash running the show, or have a similar offense to last year with the ball in Kobe's hands a lot. If Nash is controlling the ball all the time, I think Kobe might get frustrated just being another cog in Steve Nash's offense so there might be some conflict there. But if I had to make a bet, I would bet that the Lakers would run a lot of the Kobe centered offense and a lot of the pick and roll offense. That way, Dwight and Pau get enough touches in pick and rolls and Kobe can still create his own shots. I think the Princeton offense that the Lakers will be running will allow them to do both, so it should be alright. The biggest key for the Lakers though will be the bench. The Lakers, being an older team, will have to sit the starters for periods of time and if the bench can't be productive, they won't be able to beat the Heat, who have a great supporting cast now with Lewis, Allen, Miller, Haslem, and Chalmers. P.S. I would also like to point out that this is not anything like the 2004 Lakers. In 2004, the four stars were all players who needed to have the ball in their hands to be productive, and that just doesn't work out. This current Lakers team will work much better together. To put it simply, Nash is the best passer in the league, Kobe is the best pure scorer in the league, Dwight is the best defender in the league, and Pau can pass, shoot, and defend pretty well. I really don't see any weaknesses in the Lakers starting lineup. Yes, Nash is not a great defender, but Dwight has more impact defensively than any player in the league and can stop players from scoring even if they get past Nash. The only weakness of the Lakers is their bench... possibly. ericni91 : Good post, I agree with a lot of what you have written. Metta World Peace made quite the prediction too, you probably heard of it... He figures that this years Laker team will beat the all time single season record set by Jordan's Bulls. I can't see that happening because of age, but regardless it should be an interesting year. |
