Pokemon Ash's Quest is a hacked version of Pokemon Fire Red ( Not Leaf Green, note the Charizard cry at the start menu ).  It is a unique idea where it mixes the addictive game play of the Pokemon games series with the actual 1st season of the Pokemon episodes. Though i'm sure you'll be able to guess that a few minutes in, so let's just start the review.

Graphics

The graphics in this game are the same as in Pokemon fire red and leaf green. The only notable differences are how the map has been altered to suit the story line including Viridian city now being a little further away ( Recommend when you begin that you train at the beginning of route 1 and use your house for healing as you will quick have to fight several rather high level Spearow e.g. 5 - 9 ).  There are rain and thunderstorms on route 2 which is now connected to route 1 and elements of cities etc. have been altered to include more decoration and more things to do including mini quests and hidden villages with secret items and trainers.

Sound

The sound is the same as in Pokemon fire red and leaf green to keep close to the original series, just as the episodes were set in that region, it would be a good way to keep close to that time by having the right music. I think this was a good choice to not alter the sound.

Addictiveness

I will play this game again but first i need to complete it before i even consider restarting a third time. ( There's an irritating glitch in Cerulean City and if you don't go to the Gym and watch the water show first you can't continue ).

Story

The story is pretty much dead on, it would be extremely difficult to get it any closer as it is already hard to edit the maps and scripts of things in the game.  It starts off in Palet town like you would in Leaf green or Fire red and you are late to go to professor Oaks lab.  Once you get there he tells you that all the Pokemon are already taken ( the poke balls are still on the table like in the first episode ).  Instead he gives you a Pikachu and his aides ( by the door, you need to speak to them ) will give you about 5 poke and a pokedex. You may think this means you can complete the game without getting the pokedex but a guard in viridian city won't let you continue to the forest and Pewter city without it ( As in the episodes it is used as I.D. ) Gary will challenge you to a battle once you leave and he will have a level 7 Squirtle. Which is unfortunate because this time you have a type advantage, but if you're feeling a little under confident then you can use the PC in your room and withdraw a potion. I'm glad they kept this as they've stooped item prices so potions are now 900 poke-dollars instead of 300. Look for super potions in cerulean and think: "Oh come on!" Poke balls are only double price and great balls too.  Route 1 is normal length but Route 2 is directly connected.  It has a raging thunderstorm so it is easily identified. At certain points (Not just in the tall grass) Spearow sprites will fly at you and activate a battle sequence. Their levels will be between 5 and 9, maybe 10 so training is recommended before heading into route 2. Be sure to speak to the girl by the patch of water as that is Misty who will complain about you taking her bike which you'll suddenly be on but only until you get to Viridian city where it disappears. Assuming you've broken it like in the episodes. When you're healed and ready, go back to her for a battle and she has a level 8 Goldeen. She'll give you an Old Rod if you win and then she disappears.
There is a trainer directly past the guard at the north end of Viridian city so be ready and the forest is a lot more of a problem.  Instead of the rare Pikachu sightings there are now rare Level 5 Pidgeottos which are good for experience ( about 80 ). The Samurai has a house and upon beating him he will give you a repel. A trainer near the end of the forest has a powerful level 10 Beedrill and Team Rocket ( Jessie, James and Meowth make their first appearance, they appear again at Mount Moon and i've not seen them anywhere else yet. ) The grassy patch as you go into Pewter City is no longer there.  To the right as you enter is Flints rock shop. Be sure to talk to him after you beat Brock to see a plot point and collect an Everstone for behind him.  In a small house in the north east is a person who will give you a Light Ball which increases your Pikachu's Sp. Attack.  The trainer beside Brock is his little brother Forrest who has Brock's old Pokemon ( One is a Vulpix ) Brock has the same Pokemon as in Leaf green and fire red but his Onix is very powerful. His Geodude is usually defensive at least.
Mount Moons layout is very different, there is 2 moon stones to be collected and Clefairys to be caught. A trainer will have a Clefable near the end of the cave.  Before entering Cerulean City there is a sign that says "Gary was here, Ash is a loser" like in the episodes, but even more annoying is he will stop you and challenge you before entering the city. His Pokemon are far stronger than Brock's so be ready, if you lose you go right back to Pewter. Once beaten Gary, heal and go DIRECTLY into the gym, don't talk to anyone else and watch the water show.  Afterwards, Outside is one of Misty's sisters. The Nugget bridge has no trainers any more and 2 secret paths. To the right leads to Bills house and his boat that takes you back to Cerulean quickly, and there is also a poke ball that contains a Charmander. A trainer back towards Bills house will say he considered it too weak so abandoned it, if you go back again 4 spearow will be attacking it which you must defeat before you can claim it. It is level 10. And on the left side of the bridge is water..don't be fooled you CAN jump into it which will carry you to a secret island. Inside is a few trainers and items with some grassy patches.  You can catch an Oddish or Bellsprout here and a Breeder by a house at the end of the path will give you a Bulbasaur ( Level 10 like the Charmander ) Be sure to check the items they are holding!

This is currently as far as I've gotten in the story, i hope this review was helpful to anyone that read it.
Depth

The game is very large and there is always plenty to do as there is no real "The End, Credits, New Game? " You can play to your hearts content and New Game when you feel like doing it from the beginning.

Difficulty

Unlike Fire red and Leaf green, You can't choose your starter, you will always have a Pikachu. In the episodes Ash had many problems that he failed at so these are forced upon you also, such as Pokemon having higher levels and stronger attacks as well as Gym leaders being even more brutal. However it's just a matter of training your pokemon until they're "Unbeatable!"  The Poke Mart also sells things for far more than usual, Mainly Potions and Poke balls. Antidotes don't seem to have changed at all at least. So take care and save your money.

Overall

Overall i gave this game a 9.9 / 10. It would have been a 10 if the glitch in Cerulean hadn't killed my smile.  Remember to avoid it if you love your Pokemon!!

I would highly recommend this to any pokemon fan as i'm a fan of all the old games myself, despite this being a hacked version it is still very well planned, though i think the creator should have tested it a bit more.
