Hey, so here's my first review that I'm actually submitting through the RGR game's page, and that ISN'T a Sonic/ Ty review. Unfortunately, this game isn't going to be as up to date or advanced as the previous games that I've gone and reviewed so far. So, as you can tell by the title of the thread, I'm going to be reviewing Pokemon Emerald. So, unlike the rest of the Pokemon games, I'm actually impressed with this game, compared to others in the series from the GameBoy to the GameBoy Advance. Unlike Pokemon Fire Red, Crystal, and Ruby/Sapphire, this game had many upgrades to it, which included how the Sprites move during the attacks, an upgraded story to the previous one seen in Pokemon Ruby or Sapphire, and it features the all new Battle Frontier system. The Battle Frontier is basically a whole area full of Gym like buildings with leaders, however, there are exceptions and rules for each section, and they don't have a set of pokemon that are all related to each other, such as Surge would have all Electric type Pokemon or Blaine would have all Fire type Pokemon. They pretty much threw every seemingly good idea they had into this game, and got something that turned out original for the series. Now, I will start my review, and due to the RGR Review system, I'll be adding a few sections, but the new parts will be a bit shorter than the other sections that I regularly do. So, let's start this off now!
Graphics - So, in the grading section, I gave the Graphics a rating of an 8. Now, while it has alright graphics for a GameBoy Advance RPG series, it's not really different from what they've had prior to Emerald. They still have the 32 Bit style and all, which was a bit of an average for the handheld systems at the time (Even though the GBA was the only handheld released around then). However, as mentioned in the introduction section, they DID manage to be able to go and have moving sprites, which were a big step up in the battle system, and they did successfully get a miniature cutscene added into the game that WASN'T only in the start up screen (You can see this after you awaken Rayquaza to fight Groudon and Kyogre). Aside from that, there were really no other changes, but I guess, as the saying is, if it isn't broken, don't fix it.
Sound/Music - Alright, so the music in this game has, compared to the other areas I graded, the lowest rating out of everything. Why is this? It's because the music is repetitive, short, uncreative, and bland for the most part. It resets after every 15 to 20 seconds most of the time (Until they decide to add an extension piece that's played again after 3 more segments of refresh)and the music will last about only a minute and a half to two minutes when you listen to the full piece. Most of the time, they're only doing tiny remixes of tunes used in previous games, or previous areas within that same game (You can see this in the Mew battle by comparing it with the regular fights). Now, it's mainly bland because of how pixelated the tune sounds, which basically resembles a ton of really fast beeps at high and changing pitches, but it's a tiny bit reasonable, since they're working with a small system like this (despite many other GameBoy games having better music). Overall, it deserves the 7 I gave it, and it's basically being generous.
Addictiveness - Wow, this game will have you stuck to it for such a long time. They loaded it with so many features (Catch all the pokemon, beat the elite four and gym leaders, win the Pokemon Contest things, and complete the Battle Frontier), all of which are pretty challenging (Except the gyms and E4), and even then, you still have the Battle Tower AND Online tournaments to use, and not to mention that you can go shiny hunting. Overall, there are just SO many awesome features to this game that you can play, and it all makes it extremely addicting, which is why I gave it a rating of a 10.
Story - Well, I already kind of went over this, but I'll give a deeper and more thorough explanation. You're a brand new trainer who just moved into the Hoenn Region, and with the help of Professor Birch, you leave on a big adventure that reveals the secrets of the world and terrors with the plans of total world domination. While it's kind of a rehash of the past Pokemon games, it kind of isn't, mainly because of how they ADDED to the story, instead of leaving it short and really simple. Overall, I give it a 9 because they went and did some pretty good edits to the whole game while keeping true to their copy pasting skills.
Depth - Ok, so, for a Pokemon game, I gave this a rating of an 8 for depth, and I know I'll regret it in the long run. Now, while they don't perfect the depth of everything in the game, they did do an alright job at it. they didn't just rehash the story of the game, they fixed it, adding a perspective to Team Magma's and Team Aqua's story. Along with this, they add a story to the Battle Frontier, but not much of a big one at all. You also have the story on the Pokemon League, but they add no depth to that at all, keeping it the same as always. Other than this, they do give depth in the part in catching Pokemon, but not really a big fix into it. Overall, I give this a rating of an 8 due to the inconsistency.
Difficulty - A Pokemon game? Difficult? Lulz. actually, it's far more likely than you think. While almost EVERYTHING is easy, such as the Gyms, the Elite 4, and achieving every Pokemon in your selective game, there are other challenges that make it pretty difficult. First of all, and I know I have said it a million times now (So I'll just some it up), the Battle Frontier is very, very difficult. Other than that, you have those Pokemon Contest things to go and master, which are insanely difficult since they're using the best Pokemon in the end for judging. Other than that, other difficulties include getting the Pokemon that do NOT appear in your game, getting the shiny Pokemon, and getting every single Pokemon outside of your Region (Getting the Johto starters is almost impossible, since you need to get every last Pokemon in Hoenn, which to many might not have gone and done legit, I'd assume). You could also try to get all of your Pokemon at level 100 as a side challenge, but that's basically only if you have no life and are a master at the game! Overall, I gave this a rating of a 10 because they give you tons of great challenges that keep you interested throughout the whole game.
So, this is the end of the review, and yet at the same time the beginning of my reviews as an RGR staff member. Thanks for reading this, can't say it was too difficult this time

. If you liked this check out some of my reviews in the "Mega's Sonic Fan Forum" section (down in the rented center) for some more of my reviews which are, as you guessed, specifically about Sonic games. Anyways, thanks for reading (again), and I hope you will like my previous reviews and the reviews I'll have up in the future. See ya, Nya~.
