((LONG READ))-- Before I start this topic I would quickly like to ask people mature about this topic and take this in a serious matter. Racism is a serious topic and something a lot of people don't take lightly. If I somehow offend anyone in some way then I sincerely apologize in advance.
A few days back I was on a chat in another website when I was insulted for being a brown. I was called many names like brownie, chocolate face and the most hurtful:terrorist. There were 7 more people on chat at the time (2-4 idle) many of them started defending me which meant a lot. He kept going and insulting more people until he was finally kicked The next day I messaged him about the day on chat. I should have been a better person and not threatened him and called him names. I should have been the mature one in the situation and told him to back off politely. He also messaged me after that. I was surprised to see no insults but instead I found an apology written. I won't get into that because I would rather have it kept private but this was what really caught my eye. "It was completely wrong and no matter what I've been going through there was no reason for what I said to hurt you" It took a while because I had to wait a few days to get my new laptop but I messaged him again asking what had happened. He replied saying he had some bullying issues but nothing serious. I know people ca get mad and over-react but it's 2012 now and racism isn't tolerated by anyone. Calling someone something like a terrorist just because they are brown is one of the worst things you could say. So this is the question I wanted to ask you. What is your opinion on racism? How does it make you feel? And have you ever been a subject to racism? Racism in my opinion means classing someone by their religion and/or skin and that makes a lot of people feel like they've just had a million fingers pointed at them. As a Muslim racism mainly includes jokes like being a terrorist. First off just let me say that we believe in peace, And judging a book by it's cover or in this case by there background is just like racism. I don't know what gives people the right to do something like that but it's just that right. I have read tweets and posts on various websites that say "brown people should stay out of my city" or "I was less saddened about Rues death when I saw she was black" (Rue is from Hunger Games). But what makes me the most sick is how even the very few amount of people support them which only expands the amount of racism on the internet and around us. Referring back to the 1st comment about brown people staying out of this persons city, It's not your city to kick us out from. Most countries (almost all) are accepting of all cultures and religions and you have no right to neglect our rights to live. We are all human beings as well and have just as much right to live as you and I. It's not just black, brown or any religion that you offend but you ruin yourself. There are many people who will hate you for what you say or what you do. He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it. ~Martin Luther King, Jr. This quote says to me that racism is a crime that isn't tolerated AT ALL. And those who would stand up for those being targeted are the true hope for everyone and the end to racism. But those who let it go without a care in the world thinking "it's all good for me" are just as bad as those who do it. I'm not saying that people who haven't done anything to prevent it are evil, i'm saying that those who think racism isn't a problem for them and it's fine as long as it doesn't happen to them are just as evil a those who is a racist. I have no color prejudices nor caste prejudices nor creed prejudices. All I care to know is that a man is a human being, and that is enough for me; he can't be any worse. ~Mark Twain Going back to a statement I made earlier saying we are all human beings. We are just like you. Saying you don't like me or any other black person is like saying you don't like the color brown or black. Tell me, besides color what gives them the right to hate us. Because to me skin color is just color, it's not a valid reason at all to hate us. I laugh like you, I cry like you I smile like you, I hurt like you I see like you, but because of the color of my skin you think i'm nothing like you ~Humza Arshad http://www.youtube.com/user/HumzaProductions The quote above is by a man named Humza Arshad. A famous youtuber. I felt to add his name in because he is a comedian who gives a good name out to Muslims. He cares not of what they say but gives more of a good name for us. He only wishes to make the world better. He too admits the fact he is a human being and is not perfect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBUI23FQ7Gs&feature=related <-------hate video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnVu4V0XDgw <-----------his response That is all I have to say. Youre muslim?and i liked you...
Im kidding, im kidding =p I think people are racist because they are afraid or dont understand. Islamic terror is the most present phsical fear due to high scale attacks like 911. Because muslims typically keep to themself or arent a particularly large group, people know nothing about them. They go on what they hear and see. You never see anything about poets or peace campaigners in other countrys, its all the death and destruction you see, so people know the bad sides but not the good. Dont think im legitimising it, thats not my intention. Take catholics, they were loathed in the us. Now they have intertwined. Muslims are the newest addition, if they are active in there countrys the stem of opinion will shift. At another level, it seems to me humans love to devide ourself. Faith. Colour. Nationality. Language. Clothes. Food. How to have sex. We kill each other over this. Look at that list again. Yeh, we kill over that... We are wasting our potential. If you werent brown people would find something else to pick at, people are dim, they believe what theyre told. I think everyone will have had some form of racial abuse, i have, but i just pity them. This is a bit of a crazy topic, and I'm sorry that this is what the world looks like nowadays, racists, politics, hookers, etc... tsk tsk, what happened to the peaceful topics? :C But now for my opinion on racism- I just don't believe in it that much anymore. |

WALL OF TEXT
------------------ Well, I must say that racists are truly stupid people. That's a base statement, but it's as true as it gets. Does it take THAT much to believe someone of a different color is your equal? I don't think it is. To put it simply, the best thing to do is to ignore racists :/ I've never been insulted about the color of my skin. For the record I am white living in predominantly white areas. For me to be made fun of for my skin would be rather absurd. ------------------ Well, I must say that racists are truly stupid people. That's a base statement, but it's as true as it gets. Klutch : how can you not believe in it? and to face the truth yes there are some topics hard to deal with. I stated that very early on in my post that this is a hard topic to deal with and not to post if your going to complain about it. And to continue about what thenumberone said how do you not believe in it? You can't just pretend it doesn't exist in our society. |

I've never personally been attacked for the color of my skin. I'm definitely more than one kind of race but my skin is white. So for my skin I've never been attacked. Now for my religious beliefs, yes I've been attacked more than I can account the fingers on my hand. Do I think racism is wrong? Of course. The color of someone's skin has nothing to do with what kind of person they are. That's like with physical attraction, that person can look really good on the outside, but the inside could be rotten. It doesn't matter what someone looks like. Even with religious beliefs, I may not believe what someone else believes, but I think we should respect the fact that they have their own beliefs. So yes, I don't agree with anyone who is racist. Can it change? I highly doubt it. Not everyone is going to be a nice person. Some people just down right don't care. I think it's naive to think that we can "get rid of racism". That would take someone's free will. I am in no way condoning those actions, but you can't change what someone does, thinks or says either. All we can do is try to pass on the good in ourselves and hope that it'll spread to more people. The only way to "stop racism" is to get rid of the person and that isn't the answer either. So all we can do is try to pass on good morals to others. That's my opinion anyway. I am not racist, because it is just plain stupid to judge someone, by their skin color. I mean if you want to judge them, then get to know them.

I think the debate is over the word racism. Racism is judging an entire group by their skin color or their heritage. I think him picking on you because of your skin isn't racist. He's just being mean. If he believed every single person of your color of skin were a terrorist attempting to kill Americans, that's racist. Him calling you a terrorist? That's just stereotyping and being close-minded. Anyway, you reacted to him and that was his goal. He was just being mean. I think the debate is over the word racism. Racism is an institution perpetuated by our current system. Of course, it existed pre-industrial capital, but in very different forms. Today's racism is a blurry lined mechanism that takes different shapes in order to utilize divisions in the working class population. One of the major foundations of racism is the idea of who "is and isn't" a member of the community. Anyone who participates in our society should be considered a member of the community. Unfortunately, there are interests in place which try to convince people otherwise. This leads to things like Islamophobia and prejudice against people of color. |

Racism has existed since the dawn of man. It is not going away anytime soon. Is it a problem yes. But not to the degree it was many centuries ago. |

I think racism will always be an issue. No matter where you go, and at what period in time, it will be in existence. That being said, of course it is beginning to 'fade' out. We are now in world which wants to strip individuality away and unify everyone and every thing. We are taught that we should be blind to skin color, understanding of sexual orientation, and to some extent we are expected even to feel pity for people who make 'mistakes' (I'm talking some major crimes). In the end however, it doesn't matter how hard people are pushed NOT to react to skin color. It happens. I live down in the south, but my father was in the military when I was growing up, and I was thus exposed to very diverse classrooms. Skin color didn't mean much to me because I saw a pretty even mixture of all races in every school I attended while I was a military brat. Therefore, when we moved down south into one of the large cities, being a minority was a bit of a shock for us. Furthermore, it was a bit of a shock because...well, we were white kids and we were the minority. I remember the first school that we went to only contained about ten white kids, and furthermore....not only was I white, but I had a twin too! Every kid in that school knew my name! LOL I would walk down the hallways and kids would call out to me and I'd have no idea who they were. It wasn't hard on me, but it was VERY hard on my twin. Kids would call her 'vanilla cupcake' and 'snowflake', and she would go home in tears about it. I don't know if they were trying to upset her or not (I personally wouldn't get offended at those names). Even though I wouldn't have been upset, kids are mean, so I do have a vague feeling that they WERE trying to upset her. If so, she was a victim of racism I guess. warmaker : You have a point, but I think that it's not only being racist but it's discrimination against another human being for having a different color skin. |

I agree with mr.pace. Racism like slavery has always existed since the dawn of man. The only reason we associate racism and slavery to African Americans is because the connect between slavery/racism and African Americans has been more recent then lets say the Turks ensalving Armenian Christians or Eygptians enslaving the Jews (although that is subject to debate.) I challenge the notion that racism has always existed. It seems to have started within the last couple of centuries. Before that the same principle applied but with jingoism instead: nobody cared what color you were except that it might mark you as a different tribe or nation. Actually, now that I think of it, I guess that *does* make it pretty perennial, because that's just how it is today. Racism always seems to be caused by immigration. People need a scapegoat for their troubles. And we all know that when someone needs to point the finger, who do they always point it to? The new guy. Things were fine until he came along! He must be making it all go wrong! The real problem with racism is not that people don't understand it's a flawed concept (almost always, they do) but that they refuse to acknowledge that they're holding it to begin with. We humans are just too good at deceiving ourselves, and again, this is the cause of all vice, always either the motive for a vice in the first place or the justification offered to oneself after the fact. If racist people *knew* they were racist, they wouldn't be racist. But you see we have this handy dandy little expression called "I'm not racist, but", and that about sums up the problem right there in a few words.
