There are a few ways to lose fat and inches, and several methods to go about doing it. exercise is the main thing you want to focus on, followed by strict dieting. There are plenty of sites to go around looking at, but maybe some of us here can help you out.

I definitely agree with Cyro, the news just had a survey on what type of exercise helps with memory the most and lifting weights won by a far margin. I know that is a little off topic but resistance training or weight lifting can be valuable. I have never been big but I noticed a hard cardio workout sheds pounds very fast but I would start off easy if you are not used to it. The only thing I do not like about exercising is when you stop you lose progress faster then you earned it. But if you are serious and work hard you can accomplish anything. So good luck and try some fast paced cardio, the more and longer in the day you exercise will determine how fast you can change your body. I sincerely hope this helps and remember to start off easy!

There are two things you can do to lose weight.

1.  Eat healthier (not necessarily less)

2.  Exercise more (move around, don't just sit)

My suggestion is to go to the library or a bookstore and read about diet and healthy food.  Learn how to eat better instead of putting fatty, fried foods in your mouth.  Understand what's important and how it makes an impact on your life.

If you're young, talk to your parents about changing what they provide you for food.

Also, go outside a lot more, play sports, walk, dance, and move.  Don't sit around all day watching tv.  TV is fine.  Just stand or move while you watch it.

Yeah I really like to get some weight off me as well, I think I'd rather trust reliable people than to trust the sites that talk about it.

The main principles are as Cyro said eat a healthier diet and exercise more.

If you are new to exercising don't push yourself too far or you may cause unwanted injuries.

Just mainly stay away from candy, fizzy drinks. And mainly all the carbohydrates that you eat as well.

Oh, it usually takes around 20 minutes of actual exercise before you start burning any fat as well

I've noticed everyone commenting giving very general and vague explanations on how to lose weight so I'm going to try and go a bit more in depth to hopefully give you a more detailed answer and I will separate them into Diet and Exercise sections.
Diet:
When considering fat loss in your diet the primary thing you want to focus on are the carbs that you eat. First of all stay the hell away from refined carbs. Things like potato chips, cakes, sweets, chocolates. These things are your enemy.
However it is silly to assume that you don't need carbs. Carbs are very important and you need them, but as long as you eat Wholemeal carbs such as wholemeal bread/pasta, brown rice etc. You should be fine. Also be careful not to eat too much of the stuff. Try to eat slightly less of it than your normally would and help yourself to more protein and fibre rich food sources such ad meat and vegetables. I personally make a habit of not eating any carbs at all after 5pm because what does your body need the energy for anyway? You're more than likely going to be at home resting so any energy you need later on your body will tap into the fat storage.
Exercise:
Now if you are planning on doing mostly cardio, you would want to do High Intensity Interval Training. Also known as HIIT training. What this is in simple terms is exercising at a very high intensity such a sprinting in order to get your heart racing very quickly. You often rest more regularly however the rest periods are very short. So if you sprint as fast as you can for example 30 seconds, you would have a 10-20 second rest and either sprint again or do something else at a similar level of difficulty for 30 seconds. Your resting periods vary based on your level of fitness of course so don't feel too bad if you require a longer resting period in the beginning. We all have to start somewhere but Ideally you want to be doing exercises high intensity exercises with short rest periods. Try incorporating weights as well. Not necessarily high weights but make it so that you are you are doing non stop reps for about 30 seconds before tiring out.
Now the reason why I recommend HIIT training over slow low intensity cardio is because HIIT training literally kicks your metabolism into high gear. It sends it flying. Also the high level of intensity means that you are working your muscles so hard that you go into a state of after burn. The science behind it is that not only do you burn calories during your workout, but because you work your muscles so hard, the repairing of those muscles that follows the work out also burns a lot of calories. So effectively after your workout you will be sitting on your ass and still burning calories. Also because of the metabolism factor, you would ideally want do your training in the morning if you can. As you want your metabolism to running high throughout the whole day while you eat more carbs.
Hope that was of help. I would definitely like to know if you make much progress with these two main things I outlined.
