Hello Vizzed members, it's me Laian with an important message.

Recently, a threat secretly appeared. This threat is called ACTA. You think that it was the end after SOPA and PIPA? No, no, Vizzed members, that was just a preview, and ACTA is the new threat. ACTA is something that you probably haven't heard of, and I will understand you because it's secretly appeared. The news on TV  don't talk about that, don't mention that because this threat is like a dagger, waiting the opportunity to do the final and deadly blow. If ACTA is approved around the world, the worst will appear on the Internet.

Think about all the musics, all the Let's Plays, all the videos with some copyrighted contents that you enjoyed watching and listening to... do you want those videos to disappear? Do you want Youtube to be a website  with just some videos not really enjoyable and funny at all? This can't be, we must stop ACTA once and for all.

So... What you're saying is that you're actually in favor of copyright violations? You know if it weren't for sites like YouTube and Megaupload, things like this just wouldn't happen. If you got dang teenagers would stop downloading music (And more importantly: TALKING ABOUT IT) this kind of censorship wouldn't be necessary.

"Totally" seems a bit rude at the end of the message, I should fix that. In fact, it depends of the degree of violation. I agree with you about downloading music illegally. However, what is wrong doing some Let's Plays and video games tests? Videos dealing with video games will not be uploaded and deleted because there will be at least one screen with some copyrighted contents. Even if you own a copy of the game, you will not be able to record anything from it. Most of the time, videos dealing with video games are handy to make a decision when we want to buy a game. ACTA will not have any mercy if it takes effect, everything which has some copyrighted contents will be "buried" without exceptions.

And ACTA was supposed to be a law against counterfeiting only, that was too awesome to be true unfortunately...

I did sign up for two petitions against it. I hate that they want to shut off what everyone likes to do. It strangles creativity of fan works. With being able to do fan works of things you are able to develop skills to create your own things. I bet even sites like Deviant Art and Live Journal will be affected by this. Even vizzed will be shut down by this. If you fought against SOPA you'll want to fight against this. This also is worse than SOPA due to it's not going to be easily stopped and it's for the whole world!

I can't really tell you about Deviant Art and Live Journal. But it may be possible that creations which has or mentions some copyrighted contents have the same punishment. All the fanarts, fan fictions, for example, could be forced to be removed. I'm not sure at 100% but as it's a law against copyrights violation, those things have some copyrighted contents so they could have the same end unfortunately.

laian : Well actually, according to current copyright law (Which ACTA cannot supersede) you can display portions of any copyrighted work for the purposes of satire, review and a few other stipulations. I don't know how this would apply to Let's Play videos (Which wouldn't be any significant loss in my opinion) but it would still allow users to review games, movies, or whatever they want, as long as the clips used are properly credited. What it would stop is the people who mercilessly upload music videos to the YouTube, or post episodes of TV shows.

legacyme3 : Yeah, you probably do. It's another step in the direction of big government overstepping it's bounds. It's pretty similar to SOPA, but it's not getting as much media attention because it isn't going anywhere yet.

Even properly credited, it's like a wheel of fortune. There's a few chances that your video is deleted or not. You can see your video on Youtube for example today and tomorrow, you will not see it. Is there a quota? I have no idea but videos dealing with video games are a target too I suppose. Thanks for the additional informations by the way, it's good to hear various opinions about this subject too

Do they explicitly define how much a portion is? I know that there are some issues with this for printing and distributing parts of a text book for free. As far as I've heard it's never really clearly defined in that regard, but typically a single chapter out of a book is perfectly reasonable.

You know, a few months ago, I had the same reaction, never heard of it. It's one of my friends who told me that this thing has been created and the intentions. I said "WHAT?!" and I was flabbergasted. I think, unless you accidentally find some informations about ACTA on the Internet or meet a friend who heard of ACTA, you have a small percentage to know that by yourself

Yeah, I asked one of my friends whether they knew it just now and they didn't, lol.

Hopefully things like this never truly pass.

Although I agree that stolen music is pretty bad. I never do any sort of that.

Yeah, I meant to ask about copyright since you had mentioned it above. I should've asked if there were any portions that are recognized as being typically acceptable, like using one chapter from a book to teach a class.

I really don't know much about ACTA itself. Although I have heard that they'll require your ISP to monitor everything that you do over the internet. And I've also heard that it will affect the production of generic drugs, treating them as counterfeits despite the fact that a patent has expired.

Unless the download is allowed by the creator of the music (for example a remix), I don't download any other music. I download only if the creator allows the users to download the contents. Of course, I always give the credits when I use it for my videos
