Finaly, a breakthrough in web ad blocking!
Way back when I first started using firefox, I enjoyed its built in popup blocking. Now comes the most modern in ad blocking technology!

This does require you to get FireFox 3 and an addon called Adblock Plus.

How the script works is, you right mouse click on an image, or a frame, and you just tell it to adblock this images/frame. Then, you'll never have to see that again!.

The beauty about this addon is that you can block content from specific wildcard URL's, and google, being one of the biggest ad providers out there were nice enough to make there URL quite easy to block.

Simply go Tools > Add-ons (in firefox), then find Adblock plus (mine is version 0.7.5.5 at the time of writing this).
Click options, and you will see a list of filters. Simply add "http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/*", without quotes, and your done. You basicly block all the ads on vizzedboard (I never clicked them anyway.. sorry David).

I've had this for a week, and already I have blocked almost 1500 google ads! (It tells you how many ads from each URL you block)

Here is a list of other good ones to block. If anyone posts any other URLs, I'll add them to this list.

Nice finds!!! Although I don't visit many sites that have pop-ups since I only go to the same few sites a day. If I'm researching for school or something then I could see this very useful cause I hate popups. What's even worse is this one forum I went to mass pop-up'd like 50 windows non stop freezing my firefox browser. In the process it downloaded a bunch of ASP files so lets just hope those are viruses lol.

I gave you a thumbs up, I'll give you another for helping me with the Java intro lesson

My favorite add-on is no script. Been using these 2 for about 2 years and then they won lots of awards and have been in magazines etc. I just went to the highest rated ones/most downloaded and these two were the top. I've only had a few problems with adblock, that of being having a little "block" sign on ytmnd's.

Oh I see... well that sucks, some of us pay lots of money to advertise Also it's bad for business cause most sites make income off ads. But I'm not one to click on any ad of any sort, sometimes I do though.

Just hope you guys realize that if everyone did this, the majority of websites would have to be closed down. Why? Becauase most websites make a living being up, the whole point of making a big website is to make money and most websites make money off their ads. I mean seriously, are the ads on vizzed board really annoying, do they really get in the way that bad?

I seriously think you guys are making to big of a deal about ads. Popups or popunders I can understand, those are annoying, but if it's just a simple banner ad, what's the big deal?

Definatly true, without ads our world would crumble. TV, radio, and newspapers make a lot if not most of their income on advertisements and same goes for websites. I myself don't utilize ads on my portfolio for a few reasons but when you got a site like Get-Your-Rom.com, what's the point if giving if we arent gonna receive anything back? Same goes for vizzed board, vizzed board barely makes any income as it is but by blocking ads altogether your practically begging to shut it down and that would not be good.

Stuff like this is also very bad for both sides of the boat, both the advertiser and the place where that ad is being advertised. Thats 2+ people/businesses your potentially putting out of business.

But you gota look at it this way, the ad's dont fit into the layout properly, and basicly none would. I dont click them, so why should I load them and have a visual defect of the site?

Well most of the time bigbob, the ad-services pay out for just displaying the ads a certain number of times or whatever. You do get more if the user clicks an add, but its not necessary (at least this has been my experience with Google Adsense).

I understand your position and the other peoples positions. I mean if you don't click ads ever then it really does no harm at all to anyone. I see why you would spend time to implement such a script to cut down on load times and stuff. But for those who click the ads then I suggest they don't use it cause those are the ones who make us money.

Just because an ad is up doesn't mean every single person will follow through, click it and buy a product (which really sucks). But there is a slight chance of it happening. From my experience... those chances are very slim. Even if it's just a click it is still worth something. That's advertising for ya lol. It's all about risk...

It's all fine though, just don't want it to spread like wildfire cause it will be bad for the economy.

Well it counts the "page impressions" (which I assume are just the ads displaying) and I have had days before where all I had where impressions and no clicks and have gotten a few cents for it...

I suppose it may work differently they I have always assumed...

Page impressions are the exact number of times a specific Web site has been accessed or viewed by a user. A page impression acts as a counter for Web pages, informing site owners how many times their sites were visited. Page impressions are also referred to as hits.

When it says hit's it's not talking about people who click the link just page hits in general. So I'm assuming there is some sort of cash amount once you get to a certain amount of hits for the page, not the link/advertisement.

Well in that case, the ad is still loading, its just being blocked from being viewed. If you look at page source, you can still see the ad there (unless you look at generated source) (im pretty sure). So asfar as adsence goes, the ad still loads.

Yeah and the good thing is, you would still earn credit for page impressions even with the ad blocker thing on (I think, unless it is blocking all the code for the ad).

I'm sure some ads can detect whether the viewer is viewing them or not. And anyway, some advertisers pay websites just to have their ad up, sometimes they don't even care if the ad gets a click or not. It's like TV, the advertisers pay millions of dollars to these tv stations, even if the people don't buy what is being advertised. But the advertisers know that just getting there name out there is good enough sometime.

For example, I saw an ad on TV during the super bowl that advertised discount hotel rates, the site was called hotwire.com and I didn't even care about the ad but the ad stuck with me because it was a commercial well done and I put it into the back of my brain that I may need to remember the url of that site. Just a few weeks ago I visited the site. That's the perfect example of advertisers paying just to have their ad displayed, hoping that whatever they are selling sticks into the back of your brain or that you at least remember their product in some way.

If it wasn't for advertising, nothing would be free. It may seem like nothing's free but than you gotta think about somet things that you take for granted such as many tv channels and websites. If there were no such thing as advertisments, to watch TV channels would be way more expensive and websites would have to charge you just for visiting them.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
