I HATE FRACTIONS!!!

I do not know the steps to adding and subtracting fractions .I can multiply and divide fractions though. And since soon I'll be doing the M.A.P.(Missouri Assessment  Prep)test in 2 more months I could use the help. And the whole 5th grade is finishing up factions as a group so I can't practice them in class anymore and would need extra help.I know the first step is to find the common denominator though.

There is one simple way to do it. I assume that you can already add fractions with like denominators like this:

3/9 + 4/9 = ?

Because the denominators are the same, you just add the numerators: 3/9 + 4/9 = 7/9

Now, for unlike denominators. I'll use this example:

3/4 + 4/5 =?

Here is the simple way to do this. You are right on finding the least common denominator. Here is how you do it. The numbers you will use are the denominators 4 and 5. To find the least common denominator, simply multiply the 4 by 5, and multiply the 5 by 4. That gives you 20, so that means your least common denominator is 20. The last step is to remember that however much you multiply the bottom number by, you must also multiply the top number by.

(3/4) x 5 = 15/ 20

(4/5) x 4 = 16/20

Now just add them together:

15/20 + 16/20 = 31/20

Here are just more example problems that I'll work out:

1/3 + 6/7=?
(1/3) x 7 = 7/21
(6/7) x 3 = 18/21
7/21 + 18/21= 25/21

4/7 + 3/9=?
(4/7) x 9 = 34/63
(3/9) x 7 = 21/63
34/63 + 21/63 = 55/63

Does this help you out? If not, I can try to simplify it. This is just the simplest I could make it in just a few minutes.

Hello, I was just browsing around and noticed your thread.  I think the previous post is a good explanation, but if you want another there is always Khan Academy.  Here is one of their videos about fractions:

Check them out.  It is a fabulous resource for all kinds of school work.
