Howdy guys, this is the first time I have actually posted up a thread in the Video Games section but I had an interesting question. One of my most favorite games in the RGR is Phantasy Star II. But, it is also one of the only role play games I have taken a liking too. What games are your favorites and what games will you suggest I play? Perhaps someone knows something I will just love to mess around with. Granted, I am also playing Pokémon Emerald but that has only taught me one thing. Merrill sucks.

First things first, I love you. You like Phantasy Star. Play Phantasy Star 4. It's freaking awesome.

That little... Odd moment aside. You like messing around in RPGs? Play the Elder Scrolls games. You can get the first two as freeware now. Bethedsa is okay with you downloading those. If you want better controls, get Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim. You can also check out the Fallout series, as it is messing around heaven. You have a time limit in the first Fallout, so you might wanna get familiar with how to mod games. The first two are kind of on time limits. Fallout 3 and New Vegas are more open world than the first two. New Vegas is the buggiest mess, though, so play that one with caution. Fallout 3 is almost always debated by the more angry fans for some reason... It's a great game even if it is a lot like Oblivion, though.

Once again. Phantasy Star 4. It is awesome. Also, the first Phantasy Star is an amazing game. It has those old school, "Where in Odin's name am I? I have no map!" dungeons, which can be pretty fun if you don't mind a bit of map making. Phantasy Star 3 came out in a time when time travel and branching paths stories were large in number, so if you try that one, just remember it only looks so bland because it was trying too much in one cartridge. It isn't horrid, though. I don't like it, but you might.

If you got a PS2, I highly recommend Rogue Galaxy. It not that great in plot, but gameplay... It's great! It also has some of the best looking graphics to be seen on a PS2. Cel shading with 3D backdrops? Almost as amazing as eating a good home cooked dinner with amazing presentation. It also has a bug fighting minigame(I don't really bother with it), and the box is honest when it says it has over 100 hours of gameplay. If this sort of thing is already a giant turn off, I understand.

Now I can't name every RPG I would kiss to death because I grew up playing RPGs. I was playing Pokemon before I could read. You might want to give Pokemon another shot. Maybe try out the older Gameboy ones. Those are much simpler. Merill isn't that bad if you train it right, too. Of course, I used to be in the whole competitive Pokemon scene that Nintendo didn't approve of. Yeah... Dragonite is banned at their tournaments because it's too high a level. You might want to not do things competitive for right now.

Kingdom Hearts is a great series of games. Not the best RPGs out there, though. If you like a bit of button mashing that isn't some Final Fantasy turn based stuff, you might like the first game. The GBA game Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories is more about strategy, though. It's a fantastic game that is best played on the GBA, so avoid the PS2 remake unless you want to try it out. Kingdom Hearts 2 is a mixed bag for me. I never really considered it great like many do. It felt too linear, and too easy. You probably prefer challenge, so get the first game. If you want more Disney characters and happen to be a Lion King junkie like me, Kingdom Hearts 2 is worth a play. The DS games that came out for the series might be hit or miss. I love 358/2 Days, but not everyone will enjoy the mission-based gameplay. I got bored of the series by the time Birth By Sleep was on a system I couldn't get at the time, so I gave up on the series.

If you like old school RPGs that weren't from Japan, give Ultima 7 a shot. The other Ultima games are good, but 7 is a favorite of mine. It just has a better dialogue system. In the first 6, you typed out what you wanted to say. That was all fun because you could call anyone a nasty name, but it just wasn't easy for me to get into. 7 is pretty easy, though, so if you grind a lot, don't do that in this. You will be putting 50 hours a level into grinding or more if you do grind levels.

I have a crapton more of RPGs I like. I could go on for 1500 words just saying how awesome I think an RPG is. I won't. Here's a few more.

Sweet Home, I haven't played yet, but it's a horror game, so if you like horror in your RPG, check it out. Check out the first Shadow Hearts game for the PS2, as well. It has horror in it. The game is almost saying no to level grinding by having a fox mask wearing monster attack if you fight too much. This is a bit annoying as the game has random encounters, though.

If you have a ton of patience, Final Fantasy VIII might be up your alley. It's hated by many, but it's not that bad. Just not amazing. I'd rather play Final Fantasy 12, personally, which is a great game. If you have a PS3 or PSP, buy VIII off the PSN store if you are curious and want to just spend 10 bucks on it. 12 is a bit more of a mixed bag, as well. This is mainly because people tend to hate anything that isn't Final Fantasy 7... Yeah. If you want a game that feels like an MMO, this is a good one. VIII has an odd everything. Things level with you, you have an easier time playing by putting spells into stats, and there's really a ton of unconventional things in the gameplay. Traditional Final Fantasy gameplay with something Doctor Frankenstein thought up.

Star Ocean Till the End of Time is a very good RPG. So is the Suikoden games. The first Suikoden is more or less monster collecting turned 100 characters to collect turned beginner's RPG. It's pretty fun, though. I'd recommend the first one. Star Ocean Till the End of Time has a turn-based turned into real time fighting system. It's a fun as heck, and even lets you beef up the power of your enemies once you get throught the first disc. It's also got the most FABULOUS of girly men ever. Albel isn't wearing a skirt, just so you know. He's wearing something that makes movements of his legs harder to see. Suikoden is on the PS1, and Till the End of Time is on the PS2.

If you ever need any other games to try out, I will recommend more.  Just in case you wish to know, no PS3 slims don't play PS2 games.

If you have a PS3 or a 360, you could try Borderlands. Its an RPG/1st person shooter hybrid. Its a real good game, very funny, well designed, plenty of colorful characters, and you can replay it over and over again once you beat it, but it gets harder and harder through each replay.

Yaaaaaaaay Phantasy Star! Heck yeah! Love one and four! II's pretty great! III.....

Yeah Phantasy Star 1, II and IV!!

Much as I love those, though, I still... have to give credit to Final Fantasy Tactics.
I won't get into why it's my favourite; that's a rant saved for another day.

If we're getting into lesser-known retro RPG's, though, I gotta give a shout out to Seiken Denstetu 3 on SNES. Absolutely fantastic game in every respect.

For something a bit more old school, Crystalis for NES is completely great as well.

For a game with a much different feel to it, definitely give Shadowrun for Genesis a try. (there's an SNES verison, but it's vastly different and not as... Engaging, I find. It's still kinda cool, but it wasn't a game I felt I could sink countless hours into like I could the much different Genesis version.)

For a smattering of great SNES RPG's: 7th Saga, Brain Lord, Front Mission Gun Hazard, Illusion of Gaia, Live a Live, and especially Terranigma.

Hope this helps! I highly recommend any of the above! (I left out the more obvious older Final Fantasy's, since really, any RPG fan should play through them)

Yes, most of the games listed are excellent, Phantasy Star 4 is just beyond good in the setup and the character development... Rogue Star is a fine game and Star Ocean 2 is just an awesome game even in this day,  BUT
(Here comes the fanboy again.) If you want solid story and game play handled in a mature manner with a mature plot and mature subject matter. try Persona 3: FES and Persona 4. Both games are 80+ hours on the first run through and both offer many twists and turns along the way. Great for those that enjoy plot and a good game over mindless leveling.

I don't know if you have a dreamcast, but if you do, I would highly suggest Evolution: World of Sacred Device. It is really addicting and has an absolutely fantastic story. The battle system is like your typical RPG, but the special moves are so unique.

Well, I'm no RPG expert so I wouldn't know "the best of the best" but if you have a DS, then I would suggest Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor. It was a really good game with multiple scenarios due to certain outcomes.

Well first things first, you have to play all the Phantasy Star games. I loved each game. It was really cool that it was an RPG but instead of fantasy Midevil type times, you had more of a Sci-Fi theme going on.

Have you tried any of the other games in the series?

There are so many Great RPG's to play.

Like I said before, make sure to play the other Phantasy Star games. It's a great series. I would also suggest playing through the Shining Force games. Secret Of Mana and Chornotrigger are both good games as well. I have a ton that I could suggest. Maybe I should make a thread that lists the RPG's on Vizzed that I enjoy lol

I personally think Final Fantasy is the best, although you could make an argument for Summon Night and several others which are more popular overseas...

I also like ones like Grandia which are immensely underrated

SilentForgottensounds : Want good RPGs? Check Final Fantasy. For RGR, I only played FFV & FFVI. I would recommend you start with FFV, on GBA if possible, because then you can run. The game has a "job" system that isn't complicated so you can change classes when you want to (except in battle).

My favorite RPG has got to be Pokemon, even though I don't know much about it, I know a good amount more that the other ones that I've played.

If you have a DS or a Game Boy, than I would suggest playing a Final Fantasy Tactics game. Also I agree, Marill is a bad Pokémon.
