I just found some episodes of Lewis Black's show root of all evil where they pick a topic and one person is for it and the other would be against it they debate back and forth for half an hour I believe and then Lewis black decides who won. I wanna do something similar on here, first person who replies to this picks the subject and one person either replies for or against it but it has to be back and forth one replies for then the next person has to do against and so on. I figure 5 answers on both sides then we decide the winner and who ever wins picks the next subject

For it? Ok, its obviously the case, money has become the focus of life for everyone, its taken the entire world, people kill, steal, conquer, enslave, loot etc for money. Those who have it live well but insatiabley want more, those who have none die, are left behind, they could have plenty of food and water around them but be unable to use it due to the lack of pretty painted paper.
Yes, money brings out the worst in people and rules our lifes, truely, that is the root of all evil. Edit: and i think this is a great thread, should be interesting. (last edited by thenumberone on 01-14-12 08:30 AM) |

Money isn't evil. Money isn't the root of all evil.
Money is simply a way to trade or exchange goods and services. It puts value and worth to actions taken by humans and provides us an opportunity to improve all our lives. Without money, we could specialize and trade and do better in life. If we relied on everyone doing their own thing to survive, we would have a terrible existence and life would be violent, brutish, and short. Money allows us things like medicine, communications, the internet, and everything you have. Could you be a subsistance farmer and live? In some areas of the world, yes. Money provides us comfort. Money is a tool like a baseball bat, an axe, a gun, a car, or a crowbar. People and how they act is what makes leads to all the negative things associated with money. A crowbar isn't bad. A person swinging that crowbar at someone's head is bad. The person made the decision, not the crowbar. People around the world donated money to help Japan after the tsunami. People donate money to charities and causes to spread philanthropy and health and wellness and safety near and far. Without money, humans could not help each other the way we can now. You can give 5 dollars to the Red Cross and you've done something to help others you'll never meet. That is a picture of humanity. |

when we use money we place comodities above the value of our fellow man, if we trade services then switch to trading money it detaches us from the nature of a harmonious society.
Things like money only work so long as we can keep track of the huge numbers, as you can see by the financial crisis, this is not always the case, livelyhoods have been destroyed, yet all thats changed is which people have the paper pieces, people still have there farms and there jobs yet suddenly cant use the benefits in front of them for lack of pretty paper. In africa you can work your farm all day everyday but for lack of paper cant eat enough food. much of our benefits from money are only considered neccessary due to us becoming accustomed to it, much of our health problems occur due to our obsession over economic gain. Money provides us worry because its value can change, go to sleep an axe is still an axe the next morning, an apple is still an apple the next night, the money isnt still enough for the electricity or grocerys the next night though, not with moving economys. Some humans donate money, others hoarde it like a leprechaun with there gold, they cant take it with them where theyre destined to go but psychologically they cant let go, they just colect in incesantly. As a result most of the planet is dirt poor. We wouldnt hoarde food because itd go off so we'd give it to those who need it, as far as were concerned money dosent expire so we never relinquish it willingly. A picture of humanity is us sweating to plow our fields and make our medicine and giving all that we dont use to those that need it. |

Money is neither good or bad, however, it is necessary in the world today. For the sake of the debate, I'll go with not evil.
Typically, I'd say that the "root of evil" would be the individual who has the money rather than the money itself; that is, if they chose to use it to invest in nefarious deeds anyway. Money on its own is an inanimate object and so it is hard for me to imagine something unable to act on its own to be evil. |

thenumberone : Allow me to shred your comment
1. If we place goods above people, why did people of the United States donate $347 billion to charities in 2011? That was 7% of our total GDP. Without money, we couldn't donate anything to other countries, other places, and help other people. Giving is something many people and large corporations do all the time. How much does Microsoft and Wal-Mart give to charities? More than you and I will ever see. Money makes it possile. 2. Trading money IS trading services. I place value on what I do during the day and so do you. If you're a farmer and you grow corn, that corn has a value. When you sell it, you're being rewarded for your work. When you furniture, you're rewarding a carpenter for his work. If no one wants your goods or services, then you're out of luck. Would there be any art in a barter system? What would you trade for music from a band that you've never heard of or seen because the barter system wouldn't allow for the internet to operate. 3. African farms don't work well because of warlords, drought, famine, disease, and dystopia. If they removed all money systems, you still have the same problems in the subcontinent because no one would invest in those locations. MOney doesn't change anything. It makes things better because with money you can provide drugs for health and better farming systems. 4. Money changes value, yes. So do other goods. Milk is cheaper to produce nowadays because of new methods of raising cows. It's less valuable. A dairy farmer would feel less control over his income with barter systems whether or not money is involved. Money is a medium of trade. It lets countries trade food for technology, clothes for fuel, and goods for services. Imagine the world without money... You have to build your own house. You wouldn't have a car. No one would develop technology like drugs for diseases. The internet wouldn't exist. We would be living in misery without heat, air condition, plumbing, transportation, or the wide variety of goods and services we have today. Money makes all that possible. People abuse it, yes, but it isn't the root of all evil. |

I guess I cannot in any attack money. I feel too strongly that it is vital to any sort of happy existance in people. I will stick with my pro-dollar side and wait for the next topic.
