Anyone remember the 80s? You know, when Mike Tyson practically destroyed everything that stepped foot into a boxing ring with him? Well, apparently he was so badass that Nintendo ended up making a boxing game starring him. I've decided to review one of the best games on the NES: Mike Tyson's Punch Out. No real story here that's incredible deep or anything. You're Little Mac, a 17-year old boxer from New York who happens to be like 3 feet tall, and you've entered a series of boxing matches to prove you're the best with the help of your trainer, Doc Louis, who gives you plenty of mostly helpful advice in between rounds. So, let's quickly look over the controls and the fight mechanics before getting into the game.

You punch the opponent's chest by hitting the A and B button, and hit their head by holding up while doing so. You dodge by hitting left and right to dodge in that direction, You naturally guard your chest, but you have to hold up (or down, I forget ) guard your face.. In between rounds, you can hit the select button, which will net you a small recovery, but you can only do this once per fight. And if you hit down twice, you can do a really low duck as a way to dodge if you'r out of hearts (which I will get to right now).

The way every fight is set up is that you have three 3 minute rounds to knock out your opponent either by TKO (3 knockdowns in one round) or KO (down at 10). If you can't do that, you can still win by decision, which is based on your total score (You get points every time you land a hit or knock the opponent down). At the top of the screen there is you and your opponents basic health meter, and a number of hearts and stars. Hearts basically represent how many hits you can take. Every time you get hit or block a punch, you lose hearts. If you lose all of your hearts, Little Mac glows blue, representing that he is completely tired. You cant punch at all, only dodge. Dodge enough punches and you'l get enough hearts to punch again. Stars represent how many Star Uppercuts you have, which you can earn if you hit the opponent right before they attempt to hit you. You can only have 3 stars at once. To perform a star uppercut, hold up and press start (wut?) and you'll deal a great amount of damage. Try not to get hit, because you lose stars if you do. That pretty much covers controls and how the fights work, so let's start this game by entering as #3 in the Minor Circuit!

Our first opponent is Glass Joe, some tall French dude with a 1-99 record. This guy fails at boxing, seriously. One thing I noticed is that he's three feet taller than Mac, but only three pounds heavier. Wut? lol. He fights like a complete moron, throwing wimpy jabs at you and the occasional uppercut that anyone can see coming from a mile away. He leaves himself open a lot of the time, and getting stars from him isn't hard at all. In fact, whenever you hit him with a Star uppercut, he goes down in one hit no matter how much health he has and almost always stays down to the ten count. He's a total wuss in between rounds, pretty much telling you to finish him already. All in all, Glass Joe sucks at boxing, and if you lose to him, you fail at life.

Up next is the German military guy, Von Kaiser. This guy fails at boxing as well, and is only slightly harder than Glass Joe. All he does is shake his head and throws a left jab at you over and over and over again. He also goes down in one hit to the Star uppercut, but usually gets back up, so you'll have to actually try this time. Every time he gets up, he starts throwing easy to dodge uppercuts as well. All in all, Von Kaiser fails at boxing, but only a little less than Glass Joe. Onward to the champion fight of the Minor Circuit.

Here we have Piston Honda, a Japanese fighter who actually has a chance at beating you. He starts off raising his eyebrows before throwing a few jabs, then switches to some uppercuts, then will eventually will unleash his special move. He hops back and forth, then rushes in for his Piston Rush, where he throws a stream of high and low punches. IF you manage to block a punch, you usually have enough time to punch him a few times before he gets to unleash his next punch. Just remember to block, not dodge, his Piston Rush, and you'll eventually take him down. Congratulations, you're the Minor Circuit champion! You are treated to a cutscene with this nigga stealing a bike. Now, onward to the Major Circuit.

This time, we have four fights in the Major Circuit. First up is Don Flamenco, who hails from Spain. Heck, he even does some dance with a rose in his mouth just before the fight starts. Don is kinda of a smart bastardio here, and may catch you off guard the first time you fight him. He'll stand there taunting you to punch him, then block and follow up with a quick uppercut. However, that's all he does. To make this fight super easy, hit him at the beginning, dodge his first uppercut, then alternate between left and right punches to the face. If you do it right, he won't be able to recover at all and you'll knock him down. He'll always immediately throw an uppercut once he gets up, so be wary of that too. Don is piss easy once you figure out his strategy.

Next is King Hippo, who most likely kick your butt the first time you fight him because you probably won't figure out how to damage him. All he does is throw some pretty powerful punches at you while guarding constantly. See, the trick to beating him is to hit him in the face right when he opens his mouth, then land a good amount of blows to his stomach, which has a neatly placed X bandage ovr the belly button. Keep doing that, he'll go down. It only takes one knockdown to win, because he's apparently too heavy to get back up. So......next!

Great Tiger is the #1 contender. He's some Indian sorcerer that decided to take up boxing or some crap like that, and he'll prove to you that he's a legit sorcerer. He'll usually start off throwing jabs at you, which you can predict whenever the jewel on his forehead flashes, then throw uppercut after uppercut after uppercut, allowing you to get a good amount of hits on him. Don't think you can win by KO, because he'll always get up unless you get him down 3 times in a round. Eventually, he'll back away and do some voodoo magic trick in which he teleports all over the ring, punching you in the process. Combat this by blocking your face every time you hear this sound effect as he teleports. Block enough times and he'll end up in front of you, stunned, in which you can hit him right in the face for an instant knock down. This guy can get pretty annoying, but persevere and you'll get the win. Off to the Major Circuit champion battle!

Bald Bull, a very ugly, muscular boxer from Turkey. This guy is a challenge, so don't underestimate him. He constantly mixes in his attacks, one where he will rotate his fists and throw a jab, some side uppercuts, and full-on basic uppercuts. They aren't too hard t o dodge, but the real problem with this guy is his special, the Bull Charge. He'll go away to the back of the ring, then charge at you with an uppercut that will knock  you down instantly if you're hit. The problem is that once he starts, he'll do his Bull Charge over and over again for the rest of the round until he hits you or you hit him. In order to him, you have to throw a punch to his stomach just as he's approaching you. At the top of the ring is a crowd. IF you look to the right, you'll see a guy with a camera that usually flashes at a certain point during Bald Bull's Bull Charge. Use him as an indicator as to when you should throw the gut punch, which will knock him down instantly if it hits. You can't win by KO in this fight either, so you have to knock him down as many times as possible. Persevere, and you will be the champion of the Major Circuit! Now, to the last circuit, the World Circuit, with quite a few opponents here.

First up is.........Piston Honda again. He's back for revenge, and he's definitely harder then last time. He's a little faster whenever he moves, he throws punches a lot faster, ESPECIALLY his uppercuts, and his Piston Rush is faster and harder to block. He also has this move where he'll duck down ready to throw an uppercut, then tilt himself left and right until he feels like throwing the uppercut, which can throw you off. Basically, you need good reflexes to beat this guy.

Up next is a new fighter, our Russian guy named Soda Popinski. Fun Fact: HE was originally named Vodka Drunkenski in the arcade version, but changed his name so they won't influence teh childrenz. He's has a different style of fighting, where he;ll constantly throw side punches and some powerful uppercuts. His special is where his eye will twinkle and he'll throw a quick stream of jabs. IT's kinda hard to dodge, but you should be fine. He honestly isn't very hard.

Next is a rematch with Bald Bull, and he's even harder than before. Why? If you deplete all his health with basic punches, he DOESN'T go down. His health will just go right back up and you keep fighting. The only way to even knock him down is through his BUll Charge or by throwing the knockdown punch with a star uppercut, which you can get easily thanks to a move where he just throws his arms up and down and does nothing. He was already quick the first time, and he's even faster now, making this fight a tough challenge. But make it through with enough patience, and you're on your way.

Next is a rematch with Don Flamenco, and honestly he hasn't changed much. Sure, he's a little faster, but he still has his taunting uppercut, although it might require you to hit him several times before he throws his uppercut, and now is able to throw some side punches and quick, but not too damaging, jabs. He isn't hard at all, so if you had a really easy time with him the first fight, it shouldn't be too challenging this time. Onward to the #1 contender!

Meet Mr. Sandman, straight from Philadelphia. Aside from the final fight, he's probably the hardest to fight in the game. His punches are damaging, you have little oppurtunities to damage him much, and he's pretty fast. HIs special is stepping towards you and throwing a stream of really quick and powerful uppercuts. Usually, your only chance to damage him is a punch to the face and two punches to the chest, so take advantage of every oppurtuniy to hit him. Get through this bastardio and you're off to the champion fight.

Now, you face Super Macho Man, a guy straight from Hollywood who loves to flex his man boobs out before the fight starts. While fighting hi, you notice that he's basically a faster version of Soda Popinski, which mostly makes him an unispired champion fight. He does have his own special, the Spin Punch, where he'll throw side punch after side punch in a spinning fashion. Make sure to dodge well, because you go down instantly if you get hit. He's not that hard. At least, not compared to the final battle coming up next. GEt through this guy and you are now the champion of all three circuits. You get a shot of Mac on the newspaper of his victory. Now it's off to face.......him.

Meet Kid Dynamite himself, Mike Tyson. Easily the hardest boss in the game. For the first half of the first round, he'll throw REALLY fast OHKO uppercuts, which have made many kids cry of frustration back in the day (or so I assume ). IF you can survive that, he'll resort to quick jabs and uppercuts that thankfully don't eliminate your arse. You'll begin to notice that he's a Piston Honda clone, which kinda makes him unoriginal. But hey, he's Mike Fluckin Tyson, so it doesn't really matter. IF you can survive the frustration that Tyson is, you will have beaten game. Mike praises you for your epic finger speed, and he should, because he's a pain to fight.

SCORE TIME!

Graphics: 8.5
I actually think the graphics, at least for the opponents, look very good, especially since the fact that they look cartoony made them look a little better. But Doc and his soulless eyes kinda creep me out. o.O

Sound: 8
There isn't many different pieces of music in the game, but what is there is good enough for this score. The fight theme is frickin awesome, and the theme that plays where Little Mac trains with Doc is pretty good to.

Addictiveness - 9
Although this game can be pretty tough, I assure you that you'll be hooked on it trying to beat frickin Sandman.

Story - N/A
To my knowledge, there is no story. The one I mentioned earlier I kinda made up.

Depth -3
There's nothing else other than the basic fight mode. If you're good, the game won't last long at all.

Difficulty - 9
This is definitely one of the hardest games I have ever played. I've lost so many times to Sandman and Mike Tyson that it's not funny. Still, I was pretty much hooked on this game trying to finish it.

Overall - 9
This is truly an NES classic. For any old school gamer, please try out this game. It's worth your time. Thanks for reading my review.

Mike Tyson's Punchout is those games that you throw a big time boxing champion and it sold pretty quick, but the game itself is a classic as well, unlike the infamous Mr. Dream version of Punchout when Nintendo's contract with Tyson expired. Good game indeed. Great review vizwiz.
