This is for all of the gamers on vizzed or people who love to play video games. I read on a blog on face book that it has been proven by game informer and other gaming journalists that people who love to play video games also watch, read and even draw Manga and Anime of all kinds. Shocking huh?

   ...but is it really true? Is it really a fact? Or is it publicity? Either or, this is a juicy bit of info huh? But as I said, is it true? Does people who play video games love to see Manga and Anime? If so, comment on this. Well, no flaming, and hope to hear some answers.

No, that is definitely not true. It's just a generalization, and like any generalization, it may apply to the vast majority, but in no ways does it apply to every single individual. It's like if I were to say, "White people can't jump." Sure, most white kids can't jump, but there are still white dudes in the NBA. Seems like at least SOME white guys can jump.

But more specific to your question, I, at least, do not like anime or manga of "all kinds". I enjoy some anime (mostly space westerns), but as a generalized statement, I dislike anime and manga all together. (See what I did there?) The problem is that it's too high school for me. That is, most of the plots take place in high school, or are about a "High school loner who only wants to talk to a pretty girl. But when the fates conspire against him, he's sent into an incredible journey with only the help of his sassy high school crush." Hate it.

I love to play video games, all sorts too. I also love anime, and sometimes I get a little obsessed with it, as you can tell by my profile picture.

Although not all gamers like anime/manga, most of the people I've ever come into contact with on XBL has never even heard of anime or manga... *sigh* what a shame :/.


I've only seen one anime that has to deal with highschool stuff like what Lazlo was talking about... and that was Fruits Basket, great show by the way. ^^

I think the answer to this question depends largely on what type of games you like to play, as well as what game series.

For example, take the Final Fantasy series. It's a series that is heavily story-driven in each game, features anime-style drawings, and even anime-style personalities in the game. Not to mention that the game originated from Japan anyways. It's games like these that can lead fans to like anime or manga. In general, I think RPG's (mostly JRPG's) can contribute to this.

On the other hand, you have the "hardcore" gamers who play nothing but Call of Duty and Battlefield, and they wear a big question mark on their heads when you mention something anime or manga. A lot of people who fall into those categories of gamers just like the action or achievements of the game. You can generally say that most only FPS and ARPG fans won't know much about anime.

Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule. You might have someone who could fall in love with Yuna of FFX but hate every other anime, and you can also have somebody that's fourth prestige in Call of Duty that can list the episode titles of every episode of Dragonball Z. But when addressing your original hypothesis, then I would have to say no, not every gamer likes anime/manga.

But I'm not a good example of that. I love anime, manga, and games alike, and I could probably blame my gaming habits for getting me interested in anime, then manga. But I don't like every type of anime. I'm more of a fan of the school life anime that Lazlo stated above, and I don't like the western shooters that he likes.

One last note, I think this theory would hold more true in Japan than in here. Since a lot of the games in Japan are influenced by anime and vice versa, you're much more likely to see people liking similar things there. Here, anime is just treated as another mindless cartoon (but that's a discussion for yet another day. )

I really like video games, though I don't play them too much these days. I also liked reading manga since I believe the 6th grade. I stopped for a while and recently got really into it again. Also, I used to draw manga and manga-influenced characters a bit. Some of that is still in my art to this day.

There's always exceptions. Very few things are absolute. Plus, there's no numbers so I'm skeptical with regards to how often this occurs.

That's true to an extent. I started playing video games when I was about 4 or 5, but didn't even know of anime until I was about 17.

ZeegSerpentine : I can understand the strong correlation betwen the two but it is not "proven" by any stretch of the imagination.  I've been playing video games for over 20 years, I spend a lot of time doing it and I have never drawn manga, read a comic book, or seen much anime.  I tried the Dragon Ball Z series when it was originally released and didn't get into it.

Are computer games a category of video games? If so, then I've been playing video games since I was about 5 years old. I never read a manga until I was possibly 18 --I didn't even know what a manga was until around that time. I've hardly read any manga so far, so I wouldn't say that this generalization applies to me.

Well, I won't lie, it's true for me. I play video games, I love mangas and anime too. But yes, that depends of people and their preferences

Now this does apply to me.  I love anime/manga/video games.  Though I know it does not apply to everyone.  I once was part of a gaming group in the two years I was able to be in college.  Half the group knew nothing of anime yet the other half you could call otakus.  As most people said it relates to how you grow up around the gaming and anime community. 

Also if there is no real research statistics you can't believe this blog.  If they studied thousands of gamers of different types and posted their research then you could count it as a possible truth.

As surprising as it is, I've done all three before. Who knows, I may have even done all three things at once if it was possible.

That's true for me. I love Anime and VG's, but I don't think people who play games like Red Dead Redemption are like that. Just with games that have Anime or Manga counterparts.
