I have wondered this while trying a speedrun of Super Mario Land 2 via timetrial mode. I took a screenshot after dealing the final blow to Wario, and I hoped that it could record the time without the score (I left the score part blank), since this is a game without a score counter. But it didn't upload to the game page! Now I could try and put a minimum score down and draw attention to the timer count, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to put down (not only for this game, but all other games w/o score counters), neither am I sure that's the best way to separate the high scores from the low times in this, or in any other game w/ or w/o a score count. I think this calls for either an RGR update, or a set of rules laid down to guide users when they do speedrun attempts on timetrial mode (or otherwise) and submitting them. Rules like: Whether to complete the game to the end or just to a certain point; what score to submit the screenshot with to count it toward the speedrun area of the table; etc.

So, did any of that make sense to you?

I don't get why it's really called a time trial mode when all it does is record score. So far, there's no setting for speedrunning, mostly because you can't prove it with just a screenshot.

Hopefully in the future, there might be a way to record your whole run and potentially use that for speedruns.

It is only called Time Trial mode because that is the only mode available for the emulator that doesn't allow save states, I believe. But David was talking a little while ago that he intends on adding a separate section to submit specifically your time and not your score. Right now, your time can't be put in as a submission.

Actually, the RGR does record how long it takes you to take a screenshot of the score after starting the game. So you would be able to do a speedrun and record your time, so long as it's one that you can beat in one sitting. You wouldn't be able to close out and come back, for instance.

I suppose if you take a screenshot of the ending screen, and labeled it "SPEEDRUN" with your time, you would be fine.
