The Wario games often seem to add a gimmick to every new game, while they keep the great platforming feel to it. Some stick, some don’t. Sometimes they add the gimmick to the story so it’s an out of ordinary story. The one that happens to pass my mind on this one is Wario Land 3. And might I just say I love this game. It was one of the first games I ever played. I used to play it all the time when I was little. Back then, it was just the greatest to me. I even recommend it as a game to this day. Why is it so great? I’m about to tell you. This is Wario Land 3.

T
he story starts off with Wario flying his plane, when suddenly it crashed. He walks into a hole in the cave were he sees a beautiful glass globe with a whole little world. It can also wind up. But then, Wario is sucked into the globe and is now tiny. If I had played this game 10 years later, I would have gone “riiiiiight…..that’s odd” and class the story as them running out of ideas. But back then, I didn’t know the difference between a good story or a bad story. I could have played Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on the NES ten years ago and say it was the best game ever without realizing that the cane doesn’t work. Anyway, a voice tells you that you must collect five magical instruments to break this guy free, as he was imprisoned by an evil force. He’ll also let you free of this world if you free him. You agree, naturally. Why do I get the impression that this guy is evil? Even back then, I had this feeling that he shouldn’t be trusted and wanted to keep me in here forever.

he game offers you the choice of what levels you can play, so long as you have completed the previous level. The game offers a smooth day to nights transaction, which is a breath of fresh air to the “What a terrible night to have a curse” with the 1 hour delay of Simon’s quest. They happen after every time you either complete a level or quit a level. Day and night have different effects on the level, weather it is different enemies, or more enemies, or certain doors being unlocked, or closed. Some level even require you to complete them twice, or even three times, taking alternate paths which would only be possible in day or night.

There is a city level I dared only go once at night time. Before, I thought it would be interesting, but then…..AAARRRRGGGH! ZOMBIES! In which I quit the level and never returned to at night. I had to face the zombies in other levels, and that was ok (in a manner of speaking, as I hate those zombies) because only some parts of the level had zombies in. This city level had then everywhere at night. They come out of the floor, throw their heads, and when you think it’s over, the head comes back like a boomerang and gets ya. I used to hide under my bed covers at night, thinking it’ll protect me from the zombies that could come out of the floor. In the end, say six years later, I went back to that level and conquered my fears. Now I laugh at danger in the face. I suppose I have this game to thanks…still creepy as hell =C

The end of a level rewards you with a treasure chest. There are four to a level, each with a different colour. Mostly, they are just treasure you keep for your lovely collection, but some is useful to get to the next part of the game. You’ll come across some parts that just are impossible. Your there for half hour thinking: “what do I do?” Then you give up; find a treasure chest that gives you an item to get passed that spot, which makes you think “Ffffffffff…..” It’s annoying, but makes you want to explore the new area. Although some times you’ll forget completely were that spot is, as they just show you the area, but not the level, or that part of the level, for instance.

You also get power ups. You somehow lose all your power ups when you went into the globe. You must get them back to get passed some part of the game. You get these from chests with certain treasures, such as rolling down a hill, or picking up enemies or breaking certain blocks, or picking up heavier enemies, etc. There is also a golf course, that’s right. A Wario game that involves golf. But this isn’t your ordinary golf. You get an enemy, you put him down, then, with no golf clubs, you smack the enemy in the general direction of the hole (which is to the right). Not sure what this does, but is fun for the most of it. There is also a secret golf course, in which I need to collect all of the musical note coins (found hidden in every level) to unlock. For some reason, I have never gotten all of them. I’m not sure why. It’s not like me to leave those sorts of things out. This game offers yet more different ways Wario can injure himself and take that injury to his advantage. Like getting flattered to walk to a space which would be impossible, or walking into a fire to destroy special blocks. It's always funny to see that Wario get his head inflated by being stung by a bee.How does Wario deal with all this pain? Probably treasure....

Overall, I give this game a 7.9/10      I love this game so much. The graphics and music were nothing special, but the humor and game play is as classical as the second game. Having Wario’s head get inflated so much that he floats is just hilarious. It’s a great game, but a fair selection of levels and a good number of secrets to keep you playing. In fact, I had dream that once all the treasure chests were collected, I would be put in a room with a statue of a lion, and the whole of the universe was slowly sucked into the lions mouth.....then something to do with raisins, don't ask. So if your new to the Wario series, play this game first for some of the finest this series has to offer.
