I don't know a ton about this, but I do know some info based on playing a hacked Brawl before. I know that if you've done too many updates, then you may not be able to run it.

Basically, the easiest (or possibly only) way to mess with Brawl is to use Gecko OS. I don't know exactly how they get it to run, but I know it's done through Homebrew. I also know that the hacked version is simply known as Brawl +. I know that it's fairly quick and simple to alter the characters and stages for Brawl +. The person at my college who does it can generally add some files to his SD card and pop it back in the Wii within a few minutes.

He hasn't added any songs that I know of, but I'd imagine it wouldn't be that difficult. I'm sure Brawl + is the easiest way to do it though.
