This is really a very simple question, but I would just like to understand the theory better:
How does evolution explain music? I mean, what possible evolutionary benefit is there to liking certain combinations of sound wave frequencies more than others? Why should our ears be attuned to that?
It has also been shown that most people have the pentatonic scale naturally ingrained in their minds. Such that given a series of three consecutive notes in a pentatonic scale, almost anybody can give the next note.
So why? Why (according to the theory of evolution) do people understand musical chords as chords? What purpose do certain frequencies -- heard together at once -- serve?

Music doesn't have any effect on evolution.  There are no traits from listening to or liking music that ensure success in the big picture.  It's like enjoying baseball or video games.  None of those lead to evolutionary changes.

Nice effort and good question but music plays no part in the genetic changes that lead to evolutionary changes.

warmaker : i think he meant,how does evolution make us like music. Generaly animals gain trates that are usefull and discard what is not,hence puzzling we have a taste for music when it does nothing for survival.
Magpies like shiny objects,dogs like certain trees,we like certain sounds, its not know why as yet but there are many hypothesis,i dont think theyre correct though.
Basic answer=we dont know the answer.

This is a good question. To start, I have not heard any hypotheses on this subject so this is purely from the top of my head. 
I once read this article about how your brain gets a sort of high from guessing the next beat in a song, sort of like answering a tough question in class. But the question is why? To that I say, I have NO idea. Sorry.
