As a young boy, Link is tricked by Ganondorf, the King of the Gerudo Thieves. The evil human uses Link to gain access to the Sacred Realm, where he places his tainted hands on Triforce and transforms the beautiful Hyrulean landscape into a barren wasteland. Link is determined to fix the problems he helped to create, so with the help of Rauru he travels through time gathering the powers of the Seven Sages.

Why did they make Gannon a pig why not a dragon?

I'm really not sure... possibly he could be considered a minotaur rather than a pig?
Why would he be a dragon in your opinion? |

The pig was representative of the main characteristic of Ganon's personality: Greed. The pig form he takes is a direct reflection of the state of his heart as has been mentioned time and time again in Triforce lore throughout the Zelda series. The Triforce is like a mirror, and the form Ganon takes when he uses the Triforce of Power is his reflection.

Well Ganon is a pig because he is supposed to be evil and scary. He is also supposed to represent the greed that is inside him, this greed changes him from Ganadorf (man) to Ganon (monster) much in the same way it changes people.

I remember the first time I beat Ocarina of Time I was surprised about the last part of the game because it looked like something out of a movie and when I finally got to the last battle what had caught my attention was that Ganondorf had transformed into some kind of pig-like monster which left me in a state of shock...

I think it's awesome that he turns into a boar. I thought it was pretty fitting for his character. A dragon would be pretty cool but not very original, and I don't really think that a dragon suits Ganondorf as much as the pig/boar imagery does.

I think he's supposed to be a pig to represent his character. He's evil and greedy. Pigs are evil and greedy too, right?
I thought it was cool, although he still looks weird in the original Legend of Zelda, probably because of its 8-bitness.

I think that it rather suits him and I liked fighting it.
It would be cool if he turned in to a dragon but they had already had a dragon in the game. |

A lot of people were thrown off finding out that Ganon was a pig like creature when the cartoon came out (Well Excuuuuuuusee me princess) but when looking up the inspiration for the character it all makes sense.
Taken from Wikipedia: "Ganon was originally known as "Hakkai" during development of the Nintendo Entertainment System video game The Legend of Zelda, in reference to a humanoid pig character known as Zhu Bajie (Cho Hakkai in Japanese) from the famed 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West.[7] For the development of Ocarina of Time, Ganon was conceived by character designer Satoru Takizawa. Takizawa had imagined Ganon as a "crooked and complex thief, who was basically an all around abominable human being".[8] However, script director Toru Osawa claimed that this image was "not the case". He began to speak of how Ganondorf was meant to have "parts where he is rather good", comparing him to the character of Raoh in Fist of the North Star.[9] With this idea in mind, Takizawa created a tentative model of Ganondorf based on actor Christopher Lambert." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganon |

There was already a dragon in the first dungeon of Zelda 1. Either way, Ganon really wouldn't use any "dragon-like" powers, he doesn't shoot fire from his mouth, he uses a horse to fly, it really wouldn't his character. Ganon is a greedy creature, and pigs are known for their gluttony. Therefore, Ganon was made a pig.

He looks like a pig because pigs represent greed, and that's all Ganon really is, a build up of rage and greed, and the greed is eventually what keeps killing him, sad story really.

I'm gonna stop you guys right there. Ganon is most certainly NOT a pig. He's a Boar, a male hog. He is personified as that due to, as said, greed, as well as the fact that boars are powerful creatures, usually destructive in nature.

Jordanv78 :
How right you are. Zelda models itself after Eastern doctrines and the characters reflect that. Besides, a boar can be quite vicious -- look at the "Old Yeller" movie. A boar tears into the boy in that film. |

I suppose that reading all of those Zoo Books as a child really paid off for my obscure knowledge of animals. That, and I have seen every page of the Zelda wiki at least 20 time... oh well.
EDIT---- I left the header and footer text on my layout as a joke of sorts. Don't criticize me. (last edited by honneydewp243 on 08-13-12 01:44 PM) |

I think that if you look at Oriental culture, the pig is seen as an evil creature. Besides, boars are formidable animals, and they will go after a person without hesitation. The only way to escape is to climb up onto something, get in a car and drive off, or pray. They will chase a person until they catch them.
Look at all the Discovery Channel specials on wild pigs. They are vicious! Besides, I think all bad guys are pigs at heart. Phil |
