I don't know Dell's much but this deal sounds pretty good for a server

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bedwv1h&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7421&lid=197378

And for only an extra $69 you can upgrade it to 4 GB of Ram. I would definitely get this for Vizzed but only problem is, my Comcast probably isn't fast enough and comcast doesn't allow people to use them for server usage (and also comcast has a monthly limit of like 50 gb or so of transfer).

Hm... Comcast, eh? Good company, but not really business-friendly. Well, this 50GB limit is still okay, right?

It would be but I'd also be using it which would be sucking up bandwidth and I use probably 20 GB a month on average, some months only 5 GB but some months almost 50 GB.

Also, if Comcast finds out you're using their internet for this purpose, they have the right to cut you off.

Speaking of ISPs, Cox cut off our phone/Internet because they heard we were switching to Verizon. In fact, when they heard such, they BLOCKED us from getting Verizon for a month.

There are otheres for small businesses but they are like $150+ a month. If vizzed ever becomes big enough I'll invest the money into that but for now I'll have to pass on that price.

Lol.. why would you want a 56K modem in a server computer?

I think having ur own server is good and bad...
Good: More private access to it.
Bad: If it crashes and you cant fix it, your site is gone for a while.
Good: No website fees. Maybe upgrade your internet with the savings.
Bad: Were not webserver webmasters..

But dont forget, that basic price dosnt even come with an OS.

EDIT : And who pays $30 for a floppy disk drive..

I didn't realize it didn't come with any software. Thankfully, I work with a microsoft partner company and I could probably easily get a copy of windows server software for it for free

drive..

Well there are still lots of good reasons for a floppy and a modem, the main ones being bios/rom updates. I hear that with a 56k modem you can dial into computers that have a broadband connection and use it on your phone. Pretty sweet if you ask me.

Not coming with any software ain't bad at all. Many options among them using a questionable windows copy, an old windows copy, or one of they many flavors of Linux. I don't know if Suns OS would run on that proc. I want one... but you also have to ask yourself why not just get a regular pc... Dell might get you on shipping.

Lately I was thinking about putting together a fanless economy power efficient pc. On Newegg it would cost about 250 w/o any hardrives. But if it was quiet and didn't take much power you could leave it on all the time.

I try to avoid Dell's but a deal like this I figured I'd post.

Zylo: Can you really put together a good computer for that price?

Computers and servers are just a tad different.

And the reason you have a 56k modem is because if you needed something important off of it and the power was out(since most servers have auxiliary power)and since phonelines usually still work you could transfer data still even if it was slow.

Also David. I would look into getting Fios as its probably cheapest for what your looking for. However its hard to get in a lot of areas.

Also Dave. Try looking into the cheaper business alternatives for internet connections. Such as possibly an ISDN connection.

There's not a lot of choices in my town, and as I said, the choices which would support a server are a bit expensive. Once vizzed becomes big enough than I will invest the money into getting a server for vizzed board but for now, it's still a small site.

Which reminds me I get fat ass deals on Dell's being an ITT-Tech student, comps, servers, laptops, projectors, etc cheap.

But as BB pointed out there has to be a catch.
