Can you remember of a situation where people's apathy just left you SO surprised that you didn't even know how to react?

Some 2 weeks ago we were organising a volunteer work day at the local homeless animals shelter.
I sent the "invitation" (just a letter of why we need help and when and where, etc all that stuff) to our college's management specialist
and she forwarded the letter to 900 people in our college, plus we put up posters, announced it off on facebook.

Guess how many came? - only 2.

At least I was like SERIOUSLY???

My fellow citizen of the world, I know your pain. I feel that same way just about every day at college, especially last year. However, for every few apathetic people there are, there's at least one person who really cares. 

I recall there being a scholarship for an essay about the triumphs of women or something of the sort, and no woman even submitted an essay. This dude wrote a page and a half and being that he wrote the only paper on it, he got the money. I think it was a few hundred or a thousand dollars.

Wow. That is really awful I would still help even if I did not want to just because I want to help people. I think that is pretty awful. I would wish that people would be better than this.
