First of all, I gotta point out the exclamation point in my title is not my own. The game's title actually has an exclamation point! What do you think a game named Plok would be like? This game was a complete mystery to me when I got it as a kid, and the picture on the cartridge didn't help. All I could expect was that this was going to be one crazy game, and I was right. As you might guess, Plok is the name of the hero of the game. As far as what Plok is supposed to be, whether it is an animal, weird creature, or a crazy guy with a red ski mask and boxing gloves, I do not know. He is a very unconventional character who really loves flags, and throws his detachable limbs like boomerangs as a way to attack. But he isn't the odd ball in this little world, as the enemies are just as weird as he is. This game is just plain wacky, but strangely fun to play.

Graphics: 6
This graphics of this game are about what you would expect for your average SNES game. It is a two dimensional side scrolling game, to start with. But the shadowing on this game is pretty well done, bumping it just a little bit higher than your generic SNES game. But one thing that you will notice is that this game is COLORFUL. Almost everything about this game is bright and loud, but works for a game as odd as this one. That is except for the section of the game that is all in black and white, but even that strangely works. Not many games can pull off the black and white look on an SNES cartridge. There are also a wide variety of environments to go through, which keeps things fresh. At some points, you are in your typical island setting. Others, you can be in a dark forest, deserts, clouds, cliffs, and caves. Each one is done well enough that you won't really wonder where you are. The movements of the sprites are also very clean, and nearly glitch free.

Sound: 8
This game is pretty good in the sound department too. The sound effects tend to be just as cartoonish as the graphics. You will hear lots of boing, whoosh, boom, and high pitched screaming (from Plok). But they aren't super loud, so they are just subtle enough to notice, but not be overwhelming, which is an accomplishment for such a wacky game. The music does overpower the sound effects a bit. It seems that with every change with environment, you get different music, which is always a good thing. It helps give the game some variety. But the honorable mentions for music in this game go to the forest levels, as it is very spooky. The other is the boss music, as it is a huge change from fun, upbeat music, to music that is kind of has an epic feeling to it. It just makes the boss fights more awesome.

Addictiveness: 5
This gets a mediocre addictiveness rating, and for good reason. As fun as it is to throw your arms and legs at enemies, this game is a real challenge. You wouldn't expect that from such a childish game, but it really is. What brings the addictiveness down is not the difficulty however, but the fact that with how long and difficult this game is, there are no passwords or saves to help you out. If you lose all your lives, you gotta start over. And you don't start out with continues. You gotta earn them. Come on, really? There is an easy mode for this game though. The problem is, you end up skipping about 3/4 of the levels, half the bosses, and the levels are ridiculously easy. What really sucks about easy mode is that you don't even fight the final boss. SPOILER SPOILER. For the ending on easy mode, you get a little story that states you went into the flea lair (which on normal mode is like 10 levels that you don't play on easy mode) and that he defeated the queen.....real nice. But the game is still fun. It just isn't so fun if you die at around level 25-30 (there are 36 altogether).

Story: 4
Don't you love it when you take the role of a character who goes on an epic quest to save the world, kingdom, home, or a princess? Do you enjoy the character who lost his family, and vows to avenge them? You won't find that here. This game is centered around one thing, which is flags. Plok loves his flags. The adventure starts with Plok exiting his home, and finding out someone had stolen his flag. So he sets off to get his flag back. When he does so, he returns to his island to find that the fleas have taken his flags down all over the island, and replaced them with flea flags. Plok embarks on a journey to go to every area of the island, squash every flea, and replace their flags with his flags. Seems like a lot of work all over a bunch of flags to me. There really isn't much development to this story either, but honestly, what can you do to make a story like this develop more?

Depth: 8
Though the game lacks in a good story that gives the adventure importance, it makes up a little bit of that in depth. At the beginning, it might seem like it is going to get very repetitive. But as you progress through the game, you have to actually destroy every flea in the level to complete it. The levels themselves get very puzzle like. The bosses definitely require a good strategy to beat, or you will never make it. The power ups are also awesome. There are gift boxes all over the game, and when you grab it, you temporarily get some costume that gives you some ability. For example, you can get a flamethrower with a fire-fighter outfit, become buff and your flying limbs go farther and are a lot stronger, get a jet pack, etc. The ending levels in the flea cave are also a twist. They have a gift at the beginning of the level that lasts until the level is over. They vehicles that you go through the level in like motorcycles, army tanks, pogo sticks, etc. They are challenging, but pretty fun to do.

Difficulty: 9
You wouldn't expect it from such a childlike game, but it gets hard. At first, it seems like a breeze, but that first boss fight is a lot hard than what you go into it expecting. From that point, the game just gets harder and harder. It is really long too, which is part of the reason it is so difficult. Through 36 levels, you start to find yourself running low on lives halfway to 3/4 through the game. Some of the levels will also take you quite a while to complete. Usually, if a game has short a lot of levels, they are all short. That isn't always the case with this game. Prepare for a challenge that you have to put quite a bit of time to complete.

Overall: 6.7
If you are looking to pass some time, this can be an entertaining way to do it. You just gotta be in the mood for a kind of unorthodox game. The graphics are very brightly colored, and have a good variety of environments. But other than that, it is no more than what you can expect from SNES. The sound is very light and fun, and the boss music is really cool. Even though it is a fun and unusual game to play, if you intend on playing all the levels and see the real ending by playing on normal mode, it gets very frustrating when you die at the halfway point, which takes long enough already, because you don't get passwords. You probably won't like this game if you don't like adventures that impact nothing but the main character, as Plok just wants his flags back. Cute, but not much to really care about. Though the lack of story is made up in the many things you get to do like solve puzzle like levels, hunt fleas, and get neat power ups. The difficulty of this game is also very high, so you get a good challenge. Overall, it might be worth your time.

The game looks pretty decent for a sidescroller, sure is colorful, maybe that's what makes the game stand out I might check it out sometime.

pacman1755 : Haha. Colorful doesn't even begin to describe it. Although, it is funny that this game also has a whole section of levels all in black and white too.

He he, great review!
You described very well, what feelings I got, when I played this game the first time. My brothers and I couldn't really find out the sense of this little guy, but we laughed so much, when playing it.
This is a very unique game. I never found another snes-game combining this grade of craziness with a simple but fluid gameplay as good as Plok.
