Gargoyles Quest II, released by Capcom, is an amazing title. You must know about Capcom from it's other famous NES games such as MegaMan, and other platformers such a Ducktales, but if you haven't had the chance to play this game, you are really missing out on a masterpiece. Do you like Mega Man? Do you like Zelda? Then you MUST read on!
Story:
The story revolves around Firebrand, a young and upcoming warrior of the Ghoul Realm. One day while in training his village is attacked by the perilous "black flame" which decimates the inhabitants of his village. Quickly Firebrand fights his way through the town now infested with demonic ghost to the throne room of his "King". Learning of the "black flame" and the terrible destruction that it causes, Firebrand sets on his epic quest to find out just what the black flame is and to stop it's destruction. The story is deep for that of a NES game and brings you to many great locations to add to the dark atmosphere of the plot.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is like that of many NES sidescroller adventures (i.e. Megaman), however it is rather fast-paced and fluid and very challenging at the same time. The game allows you to acquire several power-ups and upgrades to Firebrand's arsenal which allow him to perform extraordinary new feats like stand on tornado's mid-air and create a gelatinous cover of spiked walls so he may rest and regain his stamina. The gameplay also incorporates some interesting and entertaining puzzle-solving elements, particularly later in the game where failure to solve a puzzle can send you right back to the beginning of a level. The game also has an almost Role-playing game feel to it, for it allows you to increase Firebrand's health, armor, and collect "vial" in exchange for more lives or "maelstrom".
Visuals:
This game has extraordinary visuals for one of it's generation! That being said at times the game can slow down due to pixelation on the screen and sometimes it breaks down into simple lines, but still none the less it is nice. The game has a large world map with very intricate areas to explore within. The game's dark shading gives it a rather eerie feeling as you transgress through dark jungles, a mirror infested labyrinth, and even a river of fire!
Sounds:
The music in this game is astounding! The soundtrack sounds very well composed and it creates a wonderful atmosphere for Firebrand's adventure! Having first played GQII when I was a child, I remember being honestly scared by the main menu's theme, and sadly over a decade later it still sends chills down my spine!
Although this game does have a loyal following of fans, it's a shame that not more people have discovered this game. It's a really engaging game for the NES that has a decent amount of replay value. I highly recommend this title.
