So I've been up for almost 48 hours now, i passed out for maybe a half hour but That's all I've slept I can't sleep I've tried everything, warm milk, closing my eyes and laying in bed, music and nothing is working. It's driving me crazy. So if any body has suggestions that would be great.

Talking Make Yourself Faint

#1: Squat down against a wall
#2: Take in 15-28 deep breaths continuously
#3: Take one last deep breath, hold it and stand up
#4: Keep holding till your vision clears (thats if you don't black out by then)
#5: Get someone to catch you when you fall. or make sure to have a soft landing.

but if you ask me lay down dim the lights, crack window open for some air, or cool breeze, drink some water and close your eyes, sorta roll your eyeballs back and focus on imagining one of those starfield screensavers that endlessly come at you.

I don't have the funnest suggestion, but it works for me... I just study and study thoroughly through all my subjects and study ahead for the next day and usually within 1-2 hours I feel sleepy... I normally sleep 2 hours almost every weekday, but studying usually gets one pretty sleepy.

Oh, one thing... if you stare at a computer screen for a while that makes it a lot harder to sleep, so don't let your brain have that kind of stimuli.

Take a dose of NyQuill. Don't make a habit of doing it every time you can't sleep because it isn't for just that, but once is fine. Get the drowsy kind for that extra push. Or just get some medicine that is specifically for helping you sleep. It can help a lot if you just need that little bit to get you to sleep. I hope you can sleep. Going too long without sleep can actually kill you.

Unless you Fatal Familial Insomnia, look it up its real.  You can't die from not sleeping (naturally anyway).  Your body will literally go into a coma on it own first, unless you have FFI they call it.  It screws up your hypothalamus so your brain literally can't go to sleep.  Crazy stuff like after it progresses to where you can't sleep at all the time frame was like 1-3 months to live and the last month is in an awakened coma where you can't move or speak yet r still awake.  Interesting the only treatment that worked was giving a guy GHB an illegal party drug, the patient was in his last weeks of life and was in the state on not being able to move or talk.  They dosed him with GHB which is naturally found in the hypothalamus and he got two hour of recorded REM sleep and when he woke he was able to talk and walk like normally.  Freaking crazy and true story, nursing school was good for something, eh.  Sadly the patient died two weeks later after being taken off the medication.  It is unclear whether is was taking him off the medication abruptly or the fact that only 5% of his hypothalamus remained at the time of death.

fightorace : You actually can die naturally. In my anatomy course, I read through a case study involving a man who forced himself to stay awake for work for days on end. Yes, his body made him pass out when it decided to take over that voluntary action. The problem was that he never passed out long enough to make up for all the lack of sleep, and he just continued to keep himself up until he had no control. He ended up dying within a couple weeks. The reason it got so bad was because he caught a bug that made him sick with fever. Because of his lack of sleep, his body couldn't do an efficient job at attacking the sickness, and he pretty much baked his organs with his fever.

crazycatpup : Don't worry. You aren't near that point, so don't let that make you paranoid.

rcarter2 : see I guess naturall wasn't the exact word, because the case you describe is classic infection cycle.  The lack of sleep didn't kill him it only made him vulnerable to infection, and that is what killed him.

I have Sleep Apnea, so I know how it is to have difficulty falling asleep. Before you ask, no, I don't have trouble breathing in my sleep... knock on wood.

What you'll want to do is go to the store and buy instant release melatonin. Melatonin is a natural chemical released by the brain into the blood stream that induces drowsiness. Take 10 miligrams of the melatonin, which should be either 1 or 2 pills. You'll sleep like a baby.

Also, try to limit the amount of stimuli that you receive. Anything bright serves as a stimuli, such as your phone, a computer or a television.

Last but not least, get yourself comfortable and clean. This includes bathing, brushing your teeth (brushing serves as a stimuli, but it'll wear off after a few minutes and you'll feel better), urinating, and wearing comfy pajamas.

Oh, and I almost forgot. If you have a laptop, smartphone or tablet that you can bring into your room, I have something great for you. It's a video, but you only have to listen to it. It's a sleep hypnosis video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCXbXpZK_HE&feature=related

JigSaw : Or... you shall surely perish. Either one I guess...

Either way I was up for a month straight because I had whooping cough and I more or less slipped into a vegetable state where I could not do much. I passed out eventually but let's hope it does not take that long. You should probably just lay in bed with the lights off, and then just lay there on your back. Do nothing in that time.

I have trouble sleeping sometimes too. The way i do it is simple. Do
something that will make you tired. Such as reading a book, drawing a
picture, or playing with beanie babies. After awhile, you'll start
feeling sleepy. then just shut off the lights, turn off anything with
light, close the blinds/curtains/drapes, and just lay down and get
comfortable. If the doing something doesn't put you to sleep, just shut
off all the light-making things, such as lamps, cell phones, laptops,
TV, PSP, DS, etc, close the curtains/blinds/drapes and make the room
absolutely dark. Close the door if you have to. Also, putting on music
helps you fall asleep. I always turn the radio on to my fav station and
relax myself and then i fall asleep, but it may only keep you awake,
since everyone is different. For some, they like the room to be
absolutely dark and totally quiet. Some need a little light and some
music. Just try what some of us have said and see what works best for
you. Sometimes, NyQuill and sleeping pills aren't always the best thing
to try. But eventually, your body will say "I'm to frikin' tired to keep
this up" and then you'll pass out. Generally, when i pass out, I stay
out for like 6-9 hours, which is about how much sleep the body needs. So
it'll be fine. One of the ways we've listed is bound to work. Good luck

try exercising as well.... burn off even more calories and hopefully your body will want to sleep.

You could also look up natural sleep remedies and try a few other ones you haven't tried yet. I'm sure there are more ways than what you've tried to fall asleep.

And maybe try and figure out what is keeping you awake and fix that instead?
