I live fairly near a major street in my neighborhood so I've witnessed / heard a lot of car accidents. Just now there was a 3 car pile up on my street with 2 fatalities. Point is I only looked out my window to see what was going on, but every other time, including just now, I see people coming out of nowhere (from other blocks down even) to the accident AFTER all the cops, ambulance, fire trucks have arrived, and I'm thinking what's the point - they're just being nosy?

I'm putting myself in the shoes of the people who are doing their job - every time they arrive at a scene, they have a swarm of people around them like the paparazzi. Is it really necessary?
I get the impression that they all come out like roaches at a car accident.

People are naturally curious. =/ It's annoying, but true. They DO swarm, despite the possibility that they'll be witnessing a morbid scene.

The last car accident I was in, my mother rear ended a guy. We had to sit there for like an hour waiting for the police to arrive. No one was hurt, but for that entire hour, EVERY SINGLE LITTLE car that went by just had to GAWK at us like we were a science experiment. And some people even crossed the busy street to ask exactly what happened. They risked their lives to get the info on a very obvious accident.

I'll admit that it really started to irritate me, but I wasn't surprised.

mike345 : I didn't want to seem like I was being sarcastic towards you because I was away from the PC while on the reply page while the other reply was submitted...

tabbikatt13 :
Yep, thanks for taking my side... it seems like whoever I mention to in my neighborhood about this - them swarming to the car accident, they take offense and act like I'm the stupid one

I guess it's natural curiosity, but it makes me feel like everyone is a gossip and I'm the outsider, oh well... :|

thenumberone :

Yeah that would of been kinda funny to see the whole families goin at it, haha.

I don't think I've seen too many funny car accidents that I can recall... mostly serious, or people who don't know how to drive. It turns out the driver who caused the accident last night was drunk. It was pretty crazy too - the one car in the middle of the accident was flipped over upside down and facing sideways from the flow of traffic, so I'm guessing it spun around on the roof after the other car crashed into it; and this all happened on my residential street, normally they happen on the main street.

tRIUNE : i saw a car that was upside down too,and embeded in a lampost but the driver had cleared off.i asumed drunk.
I also saw a car drive into the back of another that had been stopped at the lights for a full minute)in my resedential street).
And most seriously i saw a long sheet stretched out over what i can only assume was a body due to the police cordon.i get the impression it was a tourist, probably an american, who looked the wrong way(due to driving on different sides of the road),steped off the curb, and got flatened.bad luck for whoever it was,and the guy who hit them because he'd get detained by the police and possibly sued by the victims family, plus his car would be in a state.(obviously the death is more serious though.)

Natural curiosity is one thing, but I think there is more to it than just that. I believe people want to see what is going on because such things do not happen as an everyday occurrence. Even if it happens every so often as you say, it is still unusual --even for someone who sees it everyday on television. It does not, however, justify surrounding the scene of an accident.

Not only is it annoying, it can create problems. Spectators can end up slowing down emergency services, or end up needing the services themselves. Even though we see them everyday on the news, we like to take the opportunity to see these things as they happen in real life.

AuraBlaze :

Yeah I guess that makes sense when you put it that way - they're just looking for the suspense of witnessing a horrific scene up close and personal, lol. It's funny though because there does tend to be a lot of car accidents right near my house on the main street, and every time, even if it's a minor crash, it looks like the entire neighborhood comes out to go to it, like kids to an ice cream truck lol, you know? I guess you'd have to be here to see exactly what I'm talking about.

I do not get it either. They just go and they watch after some one has just been killed or what not. I remember that I saw an accident and I was just walking by, I had to call 911 and then they came. Right when I left and the 911 people got the injured out the car exploded seconds after. I was glad I called or the people inside would have died.

tRIUNE : No, no, I know what you mean. People tend to flock like sheep in the midst of a car accident because they're naturally curious to see something new. I admit that if an accident occurs in my apartment parking lot, I'll look outside to see what's going on, but I am NOT going to be like most of my neighbors and flock outside. Like AuraBlaze said, it gets in the way of the emergency vehicles and the people just trying to do their jobs. =|

tabbikatt13 :

Oh, ok. I was agreeing with what you said Sorry I confuse myself sometimes with how I reply, I was thanking you because someone finally understood what I was talking about. It seems like everyone needs to drop everything they're doing at a car accident so that they can go get involved like it's a social gathering when it's not there business. So I think it's funny to observe them through my window how they all flock like that. lol.

tRIUNE : (Sorry about the sandwich post. I'm not sure if that's legal in this forum =s) I know, haha. I was agreeing with what you said. I was just saying that your neighbors are being weird for taking offense when THEY'RE the ones that flock outside for no reason. I also agree that people shouldn't drop everything just to go witness a possibly morbid scene. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather not see a horrific crash. I'd feel too awful for the people involved. =s

Well, the reason why everyone wants to go out and see a car crash is because they want to be the first ones to know. It's the same reason we have reality TV shows and hidden camera shows now. Even if a scene like that involves death or something, they still want to go out and pique their curiosity. I'll admit that even I do that sometimes, though I try to avoid it; it's simply human nature.

But yeah, I still agree with you. Having a lot of people at a scene can be quite distracting, especially if you're working to save the people involved in the crash.

That's... interesting.
Despite all the bad drivers in Florida, I almost never see accidents. Weird.

I do not believe that there are many car accidents in my neighborhood. There might be, I just never have seen it.

I have seen a car on fire though.
