So there was a 5.9 quake in Virginia near D.C. and Richmond that has been felt as far away as New York and even all the way in Erie, PA. I felt it here where I live, though it was just a gentle sway here. Honestly, if I hadn't grown up in California I probably would not have even known what it was... but since I had I recognized immediately what was going on when I felt the house moving and saw the kitchen light swaying gently.

I hear from Facebook reports that tourists in Washington D.C. panicked and ran out into the streets (really stupid thing to do in a quake, by the way). I know we have members in the region so I am curious who felt it and how strong was it near you? I know that quakes don't really happen as often here, so what are your impressions?

Really? That is pretty good earthquake. Hopefully nothing bad happened to anybody, but that rating is up there. I didn't feel it since I don't live near Virginia, but still, that is pretty big.

Reports are coming in that people in Maine felt it as well as in Ontario, Canada. Furthest south I've heard so far has been North Carolina.

I felt it. Here it's like a 4.something, whereas the epicenter was 5.9. I'm in mid-Maryland, but I've heard reports about it from Detroit.

I was right in the northward path of the rumbling. I live north of Baltimore. I felt it as I was sitting down for my English class near 2:00, but because it was so little I thought it was an A/C vent that was shaking the room. In addition, only one other student sensed it but neither of us thought I could be an earthquake.

Elara : I did end up making a thread about this, but since this one was created first you can go ahead and close it or get one of the other mods to do so. My bad. https://www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/thread.php?id=31051

Well, I live in the south so I didn't feel the quake, but I hope everyone is alright up there.  I've never experienced a quake before so I wouldn't know how some of the members feel about it.

It's funny my whole family was asleep at the time (nap time) so we didn't notice anything. My dad a couple of towns away was at work and felt it though. Lol he thought he was having a diabetic attack then realized it was an earthquake. I live near the northern border to Connecticut in NY. (I don't give out the town).

It could go in Debate/News as well, but honestly it's just talking about who felt it so I don't see why it doesn't belong here.

I live in Wise, Virginia, but I didn't feel the earthquake, neither did my family.   But some people out in town said they felt it.

I live in New Jersey and felt it. I didn't even know it was an earthquake until my dad called me asking if things were alright.

I live in Virginia, and I didn't feel the earthquake. The weird thing, though, is that I have had family/friends tell me that they felt it, when they were no more than 10-15 minutes away from where I was at the time (in two opposite directions even). Crazy.
