There is a lot of controversy about this new film 30 Minutes or Less, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari. The plot is a pizza boy has a bomb strapped to him and is told to rob a bank. The controversy is that this actually happened to a man, and the man died. The family of this man is in outrage. How would you feel if a relative of yours died in an awful way and a comedy was made about it? I think the movies fine, but some of the general public is in very angry.

Did the writers actually know that this really happened before the movie was made? Probably not, or they would have had to get permission from the family to base the character on the real guy. If they did, and they got the permission, then the family has no right to complain because they knew and consented before filming began. If they made the film without permission and it's based on him, well then that is kinda bad but Hollywood tends to avoid that because of bad press and lawsuits. Therefore, I am inclined to think this is a coincidence and the family is acting a bit to sensitively. You don't like it, don't see it.

It's like saying that a comedy that centers around hiding that your boss died of a heart attack is offensive to every member of the audience that had a family member that died of a heart attack.

Personally, I think it's ok.

I'd be about as offended about this as I am about Avatar (some people think it's racist), Scott Pilgrim vs the World (makes fun of video game culture), and The Room (insults humanity).

The director is saying that while there are some similarities, the film isn't based off the specific situation. Some similarities? It's the exact same thing.

I agree. I'm going to see that movie. It looks funny. It's impossible to make a movie everyone that pleases everyone.
