What do you think about games that were pay-to-play that became free-to-play, such as Team Fortress 2 or Age of Conan among other things?

And also, what do you think about the MMO genre in terms of the amount of free ones? In my opinion, there's too many free-to-play MMORPGs or shooters and other things like that. I just can't stand the sight of them. There's certainly nothing wrong with the concept of MMOs. I've always wanted to try an MMORPG out. I don't think I ever will, since I've always thought of them as being a "luxury," if you will. I've always looked at World or Warcraft or FFXI or Star Wars MMOs or any other MMORPG as a luxury because you need to invest your time and money in them.

Stuff like League of Legends, fine. I don't mind that. It's being different. Some people say "it doesn't belong in a specific genre blah blah blah." . But companies like Nexon, they're just dishing out endless heaps of MMOs that it makes it seem like the MMO genre is just another fad.
I mean, I used to even consider trying out free MMOs, only my computer's a useless piece of scrap metal lol. And now, I don't even want to, because there's just so many of them out there now.

If it is free I usually get it if I like it but I understand what you mean by those games being a luxury they cost a lot and are a privilege to play if you have the money so it feels awkward and different

They are great, but I truly hope people move on from them as they get older I know I did: Runescape, Gunz the Dual, Maplestory (jeez has it had major changes, and more n more cash shop stuff for ppl to waste real money on). I feel playing games like Star Wars The Old Republic, Lord of The Rings online (now free to play ), DC Universe Online are much better since for some reason it feels like u get more for your buck. Free to play are alright- I agree it's become sort of a "fad", but in more ways than one, paid games are great.

Lol too bad they aren't too many one time purchase fee games.

I love f2p games, but my problem is that too many of them are generic clones of each other...I remember browsing a list of a bunch of free mmo's and all of the fantasy ones made in China (mind you this compiled a good portion of the list) shared these general traits:

1) Visuals similar to World of Warcraft
2) Cash shops being available
3) Generic storyline(s)/ Bad translations
4) Heavily pvp based
5) Just nothing you haven't seen a million times before

I say when the game is well made, and follows a structure like RS did if a payment is available (Have a standalone game for free, but have the option of paying for a plethora of more content) then I'm perfectly fine with mmos...I just hates how generic they can be at times.

As for games made free over time...if the developer feels like the public should access it, also fine. It allows us to experience games we may not have been able to otherwise.

If Minecraft became Free-To-Play, I'd be happy since less people would use Mineshafter.

Only MMORPG I play is free to play, and it's Earth Eternal. It's still in beta, though. It's pretty good if you enjoy a good game community, and don't mind tons of grinding.
