Seriously?! You come back to the NHL, you string along the Penguins, the Red Wings, and the Habs and then you sign with the f***ing Flyers?!!

RAGE!!!

I mostly posted this here because... well, the only real hockey fans on the board are here and now I can properly vent my frustration.

What are your thoughts on the other stuff going on right now with the NHL contracts? I know that even many Flyers fans are not too happy with Jagr joining the team (probably still see him as a Penguin), and they are still pissed about the Richards trade.

I am happy that so far the Pens have signed deals to keep Kennedy and Dupis, and just heard we picked up Sullivan from Nashville. I am really hoping to hear that they sign Dustin Jeffery since he earned a spot on the team last season.

And wow, the Jets are back... wonder how that is gonna shake things up. I heard they are talking about redoing the conferences and divisions now as a result.

I sense a LOT of back and forth posting between Elara and I. Thankfully this is my forum and we can post in here as much as we bloody well want to.

I think the Jagr move is hilarious. Typical Jagr to do what he did. And guess what.... he is going to be a villain all around the league now. That's like Iginla signing with Edmonton or Carey Price going to Toronto. Silly silly silly. He's going to have to live with it though. I'm not sure I would go to Philly after Carter and Richards both got traded away.

I think the Erhoff deal is a joke. Does anyone believe he's playing the last 4 years of his contract? I could see him playing back in Germany/Europe for those years rather than playing in the NHL and he'd get paid a lot better too. Oh well.... if the league keeps letting teams build contracts where 60% of the contract is in the first half of the deal then GM's are going to keep doing it.

Yeah, JETS ARE BACK! The restructure won't happen until a year from now because there isn't time for teams to whine about where they end up. You know there will be a lot of complaining between now and 2012-2013 about where teams are going to be playing. Detroit will thrive in the East but most Western teams don't want them to go simply for seat sales in some of the weaker markets.

And apparently Calgary is going after Brad Richards.... we do have Jay Feaster who was GM in Tampa Bay when Richards was there but come on.... that's not gonna happen

Yeah... I honestly feel for the Flyers fans with the whole Carter and Richards trades, that was very unexpected. And Richards to Los Angeles? I mean, I think that Simmonds is a great player (one of my favorites on the Kings), but I don't know much about the other guy.

All of the comments I have seen so far from Flyers fans about Jagr are... less than positive. I hope they at least support him come game time. As for Erhoff... ten years... wow. He might go the whole distance if the Sabres do well enough, but only time will tell, right? It does seem like a really stupid way to do contracts, but like you said, they allow it so it's gonna happen.

I really don't want to see Detroit in the east. Partially because I agree with the Western teams and partially because I don't want yet another huge competitor for the Eastern title. It would be nice to give Phoenix a chance at getting past round two of the playoffs though, since the Red Wings are apparently their kryptonite. I just worry that the restructure will end with their being more teams in the East than in the West, and I don't think that is balanced. I mean, they are talking about it ending up 16:14... why not just get one team to stay in the west and have it be 15:15?

Good luck on getting Brad Richards... I think last I heard the Rangers were in the front running for him. But who knows, right?

winnipeg is playing in the east this coming season. They are going to play like they are still in Atlanta but next year it'll be winnipeg in the west and either detroit, nashville or columbus in the east. No matter how you look at it, it is good for the West. Less travel to Winnipeg than to those other cities and whoever goes into the east is likely going to have an easier time than in the west.

Yeah, I'm not expecting Brad Richards, but having Feaster might do it.... and it would be a pretty awesome top line. Tanguay, Richards, Iginla. Finally put to rest the desire to have a #1 center for Iginla to play with. I don't see it happening though.

I've only seen 1 deal that I personally think is terrible. Erik Cole for 4.5m/year. He was good because he played alongside Eric Staal. I think he's going to flop without Staal to play with.

A signing I liked.... Sullivan for Pittsburgh. Solid winger who can play for either Malkin or Crosby. Not amazing but more talented than Talbot

Yeah, Sullivan sounds like he is going to be a really solid player and I hope he can help us pull our power play out of the toilet. Still, I am sad to see Talbot go since he actually was a good player (he was the one that won us the Cup after all)... plus he never had a problem with taking and giving a few hits to get the momentum going when it was needed. At least I know there will be a few players on the Flyers team I won't hate this season.

I really think that it is silly having Winnipeg in the Southeast division this season but I understand why it is happening. From what I was reading though they are planning to do an entire restructure. Honestly though, if it came down to one of those three, Columbus is the closest.

HAHAHAHA, Cole. The Habs got robbed.

yeah, I liked talbot too.... but I'm not surprised that the Pens didn't want to sign him for that long.

I think an entire restructure would be interesting. I don't see tons changing out West but I could see a lot of change in the East depending on who ends up moving over to the East.

Yeah, they really did.

Oh, Brad Richards went to the Rangers. Enjoy that one in the East. The Rangers are going to be pretty deadly this year I think with him on board. I'm not all that disappointed that Calgary didn't get him either. 9 years for 6.6 million a year... that's a lot of money to commit when Calgary is trying to "rebuild".

This really does seem to be a dry year for free agents from what I have been reading... I assume that it also doesn't help that they raised the salary cap. It is insane the money that they are throwing around right now. Rangers also got Mike Rupp from us (he was willing to take less to stay here apparently but in the end New York just offered too much money to pass up), so yeah, I am gonna have to pay attention to them this season.

I'm hijacking your thread and making it the official thread for us to rant for the entire next season. And with it being here instead I think we'll keep on top of it better.

I wonder if anyone else will post with us.

I've sort of fallen out of the loop after the first couple days of free agency. Lots has happened but I don't really care. Pittsburgh and Calgary were both fairly quiet this year. Not much for me to talk about

I would post more, but I seriously don't follow hockey enough to be on your guys' level =P

Anyway, I think a lot of the contracts being given out are a tad ridiculous.

Jagr is one of the few players I recognize (and that's only because I played an old NHL game when I was a kid. Seriously, how old is he?), and that's not neccesarily a good thing. Jagr can still play no doubt... but it's similar to a Red Sox player joining the Yankees. You can't help but hate for the past. Once games start though, I feel like they will get behind him, similar to so many sports stars switching sides in a rivalry.

Off free agency news, I am really happy to see Winnipeg back in the league. I'm not a huge hockey fan, but I am aware of a LITTLE history.

Are they going to be the Jets again? I haven't heard and wasn't aware of any news.

yeah, they're gonna be the jets. I'm pretty happy about that.

As for Jagr I expect the fans will get behind him as long as he plays well but if he doens't produce I think they will eat him alive. He's got to score early and often to get the Philly crowd on his side. He burned Philly so many times in his career I imagine there are some fans who will never like him even though he's on their team now.

Well, again, speaking from an out of sport view, Philly fans are some of the harshest fans I have ever seen. That hurts being someone who was born close enough to Philly (I was born in Penn.)

In the NFL, Eagles fans have always stood out as abrasive, as have fans of the Phillies in MLB, and the 76ers in the NBA (not so much as of late, because they don't win.)

That Philly crowd is probably one of the hardest to play in front of, next to the ones in New York, Boston, and LA.

Not only is it because of the sheer size of the cities, but it's because all these cities are very passionate about their sports.

yeah, come to Canada and see how pationate we are about Hockey.

out of the 35 million people who live in Canada they estimated that between 20-25 million watched the gold medal game during the olympics.

And the individual cities are nearly as bad. We take it very seriously up here. In some cases if a player has 2 bad games in a row the fans want him traded

. In some cases if a player has 2 bad games in a row the fans want him traded.

You should see some Red Sox fans I know. Because one guy threw like crap for ONE game out of 162.... We want him DFA'd. (for those not in the know a DFA gives a team 10 days to waive [and send him to the minor leagues], trade him, or outright release him. It removes the player from the 40 man roster, and exposes him to every team in baseball. Basically, it's a middle finger and a get out of town card)

I know how passionate Canadians are for hockey. >.>

I also know a ton of American obsess over football, and basketball for some strange reason.

Only three things scare me in this world.

Heights. Needles. Passionate fans who riot because they are outraged (ala the 2003 ALCS when the Red Sox lost to the Yankees)

Anyway, this is going a bit off topic haha...

I'm not a hockey fan really, but I should probably get into it, at least for a season. Seeing as basketball is in limbo, and I need something after baseball.

Yeah, I think that hockey is bigger in Canada than football is here, and THAT is saying something.

So apparently the Panthers have pulled a nice team together for this season... I don't have all the details but it is what the facebook page is ranting about. Honestly though, their team sucked hard last season so any change is good.

I just had a thought... at the start of the playoffs, a computer predicted that Boston would win the cup... and they did. What are your guys' thoughts on that? I am not too concerned at the moment, but if it gets it right next time I will be rather creeped out.

It feels like Accuscores predictions at the beginning of each baseball season.

It feels like a hit or miss type thing, and Boston was due to win I feel, after that 7 game collapse a year or so back, I knew they had the talent to win.

I'm not overly concerned this time, but like you, if it happens again I may be a little creeped out. I wonder who it will predict to win...

yeah, but isn't this the first time in a long time that the computer actually got it right.

Hasn't that computer picked the sharks a few times in the last couple years?

geeogree : Last year was the first time I had heard of the computer, so I have no idea.

So, news today is that Osgood is retiring from play and staying on as a goalie coach for the Wings. He gave his reason as "I have nothing more to prove."

Um... I call bullls***. My bet is that his injury last season is probably the real reason.

probably.... but when you've got 3 stanley cups and 400+ wins and an 18 year career.... what else does he really have to prove? He'll never win a Vezina with people like Thomas, Price, Luongo, Fleury and Kipprusoff around.

The real question is do you think he'll get into the hall of fame?

geeogree : See, still has stuff to prove. I mean, if it was Brodeur that was retiring and made that statement, I wouldn't really question it... but Osgood is just acting cocky.

More than likely he will get in to the hall of fame just because he's one of the goalies to actually score a goal and he has good numbers. Of course the lack of a Vezina might let others be chosen over him first.

well, maybe he feels like there is nothing left that he can actually accomplish at this point.... he has nothing left to prove. He's done everything he's going to do in the NHL at this point. It sounded arrogant but I think I understand what he meant by it. I never liked Osgood and I think he benefited a LOT from being in Detroit for all those years.

I don't really have anything else to add.... I'm not overly looking forward to this season because Calgary hasn't done much of anything to improve. I'll be glad if we make the playoffs. Beyond that there isn't much to look forward to for this season for Calgary.
