Hello, this is my first ever review for a video game, or anything, really.
Final Fantasy XIII is a rpg developed and published by Square Enix. Don't worry, you don't have to have played the previous 12 Final Fantasies because they all have their own stand-alone story. Final Fantasy XIII takes place in a planet called Cocoon, a utopia overlooking a bigger planet called Gran Pulse. The people of Cocoon despise anything associated to Gran Pulse. In fact, when they found out an artifact allegedly from Gran Pulse in a city in Cocoon, the government decided to "purge" everyone nearby. This is where one of our main protagonist kicks in with the name Lightning. As she rides the train with the people to be purged, she meets interesting characters and we find out more about her story and Cocoon's story as a whole. In my opinion I thought the story was enjoyable, but I had to check the codex to know more about l'Cie, fal'Cie, and Cieth every once in a while to get back on track.
The battle system in Final Fantasy XIII is turn based, but it is very fast paced. Playable characters have 'roles' they can play that you can change when you want during a battle. Some examples of roles is the commando, the physical attacker, and the medic, which well, heals the party. During a battle you have the option to 'stagger' your opponent with your ravager (mage), which when successful, can make you deal more damage. The battle system is very fun and I never felt like it was tiresome. It also makes you feel specially awesome when you finally defeat a particularly hard boss.
The presentation of the game is fantastic to say the least. The game is gorgeous and you don't even need a high-def tv to appreciate the beauty of it (but seriously, play it on a flat screen and it will be like heaven xD). The music is nice, but some of it doesn't quite fit with some of the scenes. The battle system on the other hand, is very addicting to listen to, and you will never tire of it, however many times you fight monsters.
Overall, I really liked the game. There was just some minor annoyances here and there, but it didn't break the game. The story was enjoyable and the battle system refreshens the rpg genre. I give this game a 9/10. Thank you for reading my review. This game is available for the Xbox 360 and the PS3.
