It all depends on what you want from the band and how serious you are about it, and if your skills match what you want from the band. If you just want to have fun with some friends, that's great and it doesn't really matter what you do as long as everyone is okay with it being just for fun. If you're looking for something more serious, then you need to be a serious player and make sure you find people who are serious like you, you might be able to find them by posting an ad on craigslist or something like that. Making sure to set out a clear schedule of band practices and making sure everyone can make it, as well as knowing how committed people are and the commitment you expect from them is important too.

I have been in a band and it is hard. I would try to get the same taste of music with your band members. If you really want to be in a band, you would have to practice a lot is what my advice is.

Second, make sure they share the same musical tastes, or are at least close. If one wants to do a country group and the other wants to be rap, you wont work out that well.

Third, PRACTICE. You won't be good right off the bat.
