The last known combat veteran of World War I, Claude Stanley Choules, has died in Australia at the age of 110.

Known by his comrades as Chuckles, British-born Mr Choules joined the Royal Navy at the age of 16.

He migrated to Australia in the 1920s, served in the military for more than 40 years and had been married to his wife for 80 years.

Mr Choules was reported to have died in his sleep at a nursing home in his adopted city of Perth.

It's always said reading about someone dying but even more so this one, it's hard to believe that their is no one alive right now that fought in the first world war

You are a fading dream, but one that has been touched by reality. Run, dream. Run on into the daylight. And walk into reality.

gtwalq : You make a very good point. Though it is honestly rather unlikely that there are any more still around.

It is still strange to think that we are only three years away from the centennial anniversary of World War I and yet it seems like it has been much longer.

And now finally may they all rest peacefully, they did a great deed for us and have earned their rest, farewell brave men.

That's very sad. An entire generation who first experienced total war is gone. It must have been amazing to live that long though. Imagine all the changes that man saw, from airplanes to landing a man on the moon. He saw the falls of empires and the rise of superpowers. Hell, he got to watch the progression of motion pictures from a black and white screen in a theater with no sound but what a live organist played to thin little personal tvs that not only have color and sound but now have 3d. And probably one of the more amazing things he was alive for was the invention and use of the atomic bomb. Could you imagine the terror that this would have brought to a WW1 vet who probably still had nightmares of being in the trenches as mustard gas killed men around him who hadn't had time to put on a gas mask? At least with the mustard gas there's a way to protect yourself, with the atomic bomb there was no hiding, no gas mask, no safety, only knowing that if one was dropped on you, you and hundreds of thousands of people would be dead in an instant... The thought is sending shivers down my spine. It's amazing how far humans have come in just 110 years

From a person who has been over seas and seen combat, I am sure he is in a better place, with no wars, no worries. no matter what army you are from (as long as its allies lol) we are all brothers. sad to see another one go.

Well, now he can rest in peace. It's pretty neat that he lived that long, but I would imagine that it wouldn't be very pleasant by the time you hit your 90s.
