I wind up writing more in one of my stories or reading. Both tend to tire me out after awhile for some reason. =| There are times when I just lie there, staring at my ceiling. I don't usually try to force sleep. Most nights when I have a hard time getting to sleep, I wind up drifting off around two to three hours later, so I try not to get too frustrated.

I just never seem to have that problem now.

When I can't sleep, I just toss and turn and try to relax.

I am someone who has to block out stimuli (other than white noise like a fan running) in order to sleep. If the television or radio is on or there are regular noises outside, I can't help but focus on it which in turn keeps me from getting to sleep. So, getting up or resting in bed doing something is counter-productive for me.
When I can't sleep, I just toss and turn and try to relax.
