From Reuters:

Microsoft sides with Nintendo in fight vs Sony
Thu May 11, 2006 2:25 PM BST

By Daisuke Wakabayashi

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. sided with rival Nintendo Co. Ltd. <7974.OS> on Wednesday in the fight to unseat video game leader Sony Corp.<6758.T>, saying many consumers will choose to buy both of their machines for the price of one PlayStation 3.

The bad blood between Sony and Microsoft in the fight for dominance in the nearly $30 billion video game industry has escalated over the last few days, with both sides trading barbs at the E3 Expo, the video game industry's annual trade show.

Microsoft entered the next-generation game console market first with its Xbox 360 last November.

Sony aims to extend its market leadership with its upcoming PS3, while Nintendo plans to offer a new game machine called Wii in the fourth quarter.

"Tell me why you would buy a $600 PS3?" Peter Moore, a Microsoft vice president, said in an interview. "People are going to buy two (machines.) They're going to buy an Xbox and they're going to buy a Wii ... for the price of one PS3."

Microsoft predicted on Tuesday it will have 10 million Xbox 360 consoles in the market before Sony launches the PS3. The high-end Xbox 360 sells for $399, but it does not include a built-in high-definition DVD video player that comes with Sony's PS3.

Sony plans to sell a premium PS3 model for $599 when it debuts in North America on November 17, and Nintendo has not yet disclosed pricing for Wii.

Wii comes equipped with motion sensitive controllers to allow users to mimic the motion of wielding a sword or swinging a tennis racket.

Moore then turned pitchman for Nintendo's Wii, the latest offering from the Japanese company that once dominated the video game industry.

"People will always gravitate toward a competitively priced product -- like what I believe Wii will be -- with innovative new designs and great intellectual property like Mario, Zelda and Metroid," Moore told Reuters.

Sony currently dominates the worldwide video game market with a 66 percent share, while Microsoft and Nintendo each hold 17 percent, according to Strategy Analytics.

"We have 100 percent market share of the next-generation, and their job is to take that from us," said Moore.

"When I think on everything that we've got going right now that is real versus what Sony promises to do six, seven months from now, obviously we feel very good about where we stand."

LOST IN TRANSLATION

Despite Microsoft's head start with the Xbox 360, the software giant still faces an uphill climb in Sony and Nintendo's home turf.

Microsoft received a tepid response to its Xbox 360 debut in Japan and demand fell short of expectations during last year's holiday season when it sold about 100,000 machines.

The company introduced a competitively priced console in Japan, but some of its game titles did not appeal to Japanese gamers. Moore expects upcoming role-playing games like "Lost Odyssey" and "Blue Dragon" from the creator of the popular "Final Fantasy" series to do well in Japan.

"Quite frankly," said Moore, "if we're sitting here a year from now and things continue to fall flat, then we might say 'we don't know what to do anymore."'

Sony sides with Nintendo?
"I think Peter Moore is exactly right. I think Nintendo will be the second system consumers purchase after PlayStation 3."

"I haven't had a chance to check out the Wii myself, but Nintendo has a great history of innovation and has always done great things for gaming and long may they do so. But as it relates to our strategy they are very much in a different market."

lol a stupid wii joke

yeah, well value for money consoles are always good news in my book...

as for the link... it is kinda, unoriginal for sony to copy the interesting parts... thats probably why they held back the ps3, to get a competitive edge with gadgets...

I think that's exactly why the PS3 was delayed, just to make sure Nintendo didn't have anything they didn't have.

FOr what I've always noticed, Gamecube is a backup system for most people. A person owns an XBox, they have a greater chance of also owning a gamecube rather than PS2. Same goes for the PS2.

Yeah but you have Sony saying, "Buy a Wii!" You have MS saying, "Buy a Wii!" And you have Nintendo saying, "Buy a Wii!" So it's just really funny.

Dude who cares if you buy two systems of the price of PS3. PS3 price is like that for a reason. Its like this if you would to buy PS2 for $300 as it was back in the day, then by the next generation for the same price for $300. That would be dumb because it has better graphics and etc and thats why it costs more.Just like the other two systems like Nintendo system and Microsofts system they should of been a little more.

Technology does get cheaper and outdated quick though. The NES came out at around $500 didn't it? Would anyoen pay $500 for it now days? No, because the technology is outdated and isn't worth that much anymore.

True, I wouldnt pay $30 for a NES now
They call it the next generation in gaming, but they just have better graphics, and can handle more stuff at once, but does that really make them next generation...?

I'm pretty sure NES was $200 David. Stephen the PS3 only costs that much because of Blu-Ray, sure it has top technology in it, but a lot of it's cost is the Blu-Ray Drive.

Also Stephen as David pointed out your reasoning is faulty. Look at DVD players. They used to be $500 or more, but now you can get one for like $50.

And Wii doesn't need nearly as much power because it isn't going to do HD, so why are they going to charge $500? Also Sony kinda hurt themselves with this price. They have pretty much shutout the casual gamer.

It's fighting with HD-DVD to be the next generation of DVD's. Like Sony had the Beta Max and they fought VHS's. You certainly make strong statements when you don't know that much about the systems.

Maybe i"m thinking of a different gamins system, but even so, all game systems are released at very high prices and just work their way down.

Well mabey a second system, I'll talk about that after I say this.

The ps3 is expensive, and the 360 and do everything it can do. The graphics will probably be better (not by very much at all though) And most games will probably come out cross platform anyways.

The 360 had edges over the ps3 too. Like how easy it is to link with windows xp, and or stream pictures, music, and video, to make them truely multimedia machines.

I think Sony's inclusion of Blu-Ray is a big risk. I don't think the market is ready for the next generation of technology yet. The jump from dvd to the next generation isn't half as big of a jump and the jump from vhs to dvd.

With Vhs to dvd you had increased quality, many more interactive options (like subtitles and extras) No seek time, and MUCH IMPROVED AUDIO QUALITY, support AND OPTIONS.

Now with dvd to blueray or dvd here is what you get.

MORE SPACE....

ANything else?..... well.... .... ... I guess not. With players will be able to play in Higher definition, but who here has a tv that even supports 720P ? Dvds are able to go... 480i I believe.

So not only should you have a sony 3, but then you need a 1000$ HD tv?

OH OH, there is one more thing you will get with the next generation of media format... More copyright controls.

Plus Sony's idea with copying nintendo with the motion sensor idea seems really seperate. whats funny is though they decided to make it more of a tilt sensor instead of a full fleged sensor like the Wii has to offer.

You know how difficult it will be to use the PS3 controller with a tilt sensor. "hey I can
tilt the controller and it turns the wheel on my controller cool.... Oh hey whats up bob crap I tilted my controller tooo much I ran off the track because I was a little bit distracted."

But with the Wii hey I'm standing up and I have no problems because the game is so active it feels as though I am there.... and the distraction dont have a huge impact because its not a tilt system.....

Xbox 360 ....
If you want the summary scroll to 2nd paragraph.

Hey you can connect with everyone and play any game with others. If not you can still talk to them even if its a single player game and your just in the dashboard. But wait.... updates to fix games up more.... I played Call of Duty 2's multiplayer and was dissapointed.... It lagged and no good lobby system..... next month an update happened hahaha w00t I have no more laag and the lobby system pwnz.
Hey I feel like playing small addictive cheap games. Hey lets download a game like Marble Blast Ultra. its only $8 and I am having alot of fun playing it. Its addictive and its fun. Whats this online play nice. Hey lets invite somebody. Hmm Johnny is playing oblivion hmmmmmmm -INVITE- hey johhny hows oblivion? "oh its great you know I just got done owning some daedra w00t they were taking over the imperial city with lord dagon himself there. good thing I was there... hahaha" Wow sounds interesting... wait a second... you lie your achievments say you are not even past the 3rd main quest mission.... are you retarded and that desperate to lie and make yourself look good?

Basically they have the best online system and will still when PS3 comes out. you can download trailers and demos for free and plugin for games and also updates which fixes flaws to a game... So there.

tilt the controller and it turns the wheel on my controller cool....

So there.

I've played with a tilt controller with PSX, and its not bad. Its not as good as using joysticks, but it is fairly good.

I thought Xbox 360 did have downloadable trailers and stuff...
Maby it was going to have...

The Wiimote isn't a tilt controller. And by that I mean there is a lot more to it than simply tilting like the PS3 controller. Also all three systems will probably have downloadable demos etc.

The reason why PS3 cost so much it isn't because the blu-ray, but its also they have more things you can do on it. Not sure what other things you can do on it, but I found that out a couple of months ago.

No Stephen, it is because of Blu-Ray. I have provided the my source behind my reasoning below.

Jun 15, 2006 - Samsung Launches Industry's First Blu-ray Player
Samsung today announced that the industry's first Blu-ray player has been shipped to retailers in the U.S. market for availability on June 25th. The Samsung BD-P1000 plays Blu-ray software titles at the highest resolution available via a native 1080p HDMI output for films digitally mastered in 1920×1080p. The BD-P1000 also up-converts conventional DVDs to 1080p through the HDMI digital interface so the picture quality of any traditional DVD will look noticeably more detailed when used with the disc player. The BD-P1000 is backwards compatible and plays both standard DVDs and CDs in addition to supporting all DVD formats including, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R. Connectivity includes HDMI, Component, S-video and composite outputs. Supported audio formats include Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, MP3 and 192KHz LPCM. The BD-P1000 will be available in stores on June 25, 2006 at a MAP of $999.99.
