Yesterday I went to a Japanese restaurant / sushi restaurant for the first time, and it was very interesting. I really enjoyed it even though the flavors of the food were very different than what I was used to.

I had avocado sushi rolls, I didn't like them because of the seaweed texture. Won't get sushi next time. I also had vegetable tempura with tempura sauce, and miso soup. Both were very good and I hope to go back soon and try agedashi tofu. They also gave us a cute little fruit dessert, the bowl was made out of an orange peel and it was filled with a selection of different cubed fruits. Everything was carefully prepared and beautifully displayed on the plates, I was so impressed. Even the dishes were cute.

So Vizzed... Have you ever tried authentic Japanese food? And if so, what is your favorite? If you haven't tried it before, what Japanese dish do you think would be interesting to try?

Note: Top ramen does not count...

Top Ramen doesn't count? Good thing I only buy Maruchan. I kid. I've been to a Japanese restaurant before but I didn't really like much of the food and I was confused. That was almost 4 years ago, I'd like to go back and give it another try.

Yes I have...I went to a Japanese restaurant for my last birthday with family.

It was an all you can eat Japanese buffet...I can't begin to tell you how many plates of Domburi, Onigiri, Korokke I had.

In my opinion, I think Sushi is the tastiest food from Japan, that I've tried at least.

I could live off of Japanese curry, it is the greatest food ever. I don't really care for sushi that much since I cannot eat shellfish (makes me sick), but I do love tuna rolls and other fish sushi that has the rice outside instead of the nori (seaweed). Not really big on the seaweed taste. Other than that, I love real ramen (not top ramen, though that is nice too, but Sapporo Ichiban brand imported from Japan kicks the butt of Maruchan and Nissan). I love yakisoba as well, preferably with beef. Depending on the filling I also love rice balls and steam buns (I hate An, the sweet bean paste).

Oh, and mochi. I LOVE mochi. And sake, and Japanese dark beer.

Sadly, no matter how much I try to like it, I hate miso soup. I just cannot find a way that I can like the taste and texture of tofu.

I've had japanese food a few times in my entire life. I was always afraid to eat some of their food, because some of there food is uncooked which scared me from trying it. Eventually i stepped up to the plate and tried it. Which ending not being that bad. I've had sushi, lamb, eggrolls, chicken, stir fry before. My favorite would have to be the stir fry with the veggies, rice and pork. Every bite just seems so healty.

gamernate : If you don't want uncooked fish (neither do I) then just don't order the sushi varities with raw fish. There are a lot without, I don't even eat seafood so I got an avocado roll.

alexanyways : Thanks

Elara : I had Japanese curried vegetables once, it was really good. I totally forgot to mention that in my first post since it was made at home and not at a restaurant. The miso soup I had really tiny cubes of tofu. But as a vegan I am used to tofu and eat it pretty often (compared to most people) so it wasn't a big deal for me.

Yeah, I have tried it many different ways but there is just something in the texture of tofu that makes me gag. The only time I think I have been able to eat it and like it was once in lasagna (in place of ricotta cheese, which I also hate) and in Tofutti ice cream bars.

Elara : There are different firmnesses of tofu. I can't eat extra firm by itself without the texture bothering me, either. It has to be smooth, like medium firm or silken, otherwise I don't like it.

Elara : I think it depends on the restaurant. If the texture bothered you it was most likely extra firm. The tiny cubes they used in the miso soup I tried was medium firm though.

I have, we once bought a small sushi pack from a market hall at the centre. It had three sushi rolls, one of salmon, shrimp and the last one I can't unfortunately remember, with wasabi, soy and ginger. I only ate the shrimp one, though, for I can't stand fish mostly and the third one wasn't very good in my opinion, if I remember correctly. To top it all, I went to take a piece of the round wasabi and quite foolishly stuck it in my mouth, and I still tasted it for a long time. I don't think the Japanese food culture would be very enjoyable for a fish disliker like me...

Annette : huh,i thought sushi had to have fish, you learn something new everyday.

I did have a japanese style seafood platter which i didnt like much,i hate raw fish unless its smoked, and crab, squid, lobster etc have no taste.
Not to make anyone feel queasy but im glad i didnt have it in japan,i saw a program where the guy got a massive fish platter with fresh seafood and he was happily eating the fish when it twitched.you could actualy see the shock in his eyes.the japanese woman wasnt impressed when he sent it back, apparently they just cut it down the middle then send it out, that was pretty disturbing.

thenumberone : Yeah, I've seen fish, squid and turtles cut open alive in seafood markets and it's pretty shocking, disgusting and abhorrent. I seriously doubt it would be allowed if they were eating mammals or birds while they were still alive. But for some reason it is viewed as different-- I can't fathom why.

I'm pretty sure the requirements for it to be "sushi" is that it has to be the special type of rice (sticky rice cooked with vinegar) wrapped in seaweed. The other ingredients are left up to what type it is.

Yes I have and it's delicious. I even went to a restaurant where they cooked in front of you and tossing their equipment around. It was a fun night and it was funny and fun having the cook grabbing a bottle of sake and shooting it into your mouth. It was fun.
