Well before I can ask you your opinion I need to tell you the reason why I'm asking. My mom has been diagnosed with Hepatitis C. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but it was detected really late so now she's gotta go through all kinds of treatments that are similar to chemo. Her hair is going to fall out and she's gonna drop lots of weight. Well my mom absolutely adores her hair. It's the one thing about herself she really loves. So as a way of helping her get through it, I'm gonna shave my head too. I've talked about it with Kerubi (my fiance if there's anyone who doesn't know), and he's perfectly fine with it. So I wanna know what you guys think about this decision. Would you do it if your mom was gonna lose her hair?

XxChaosxX : First let me say that I am praying for you and your family. I know what it’s like to go through family members going through an illness and it is definitely important for family to show support in a time like that. I think it’s noble that you would want to do something like that and if it’s something you really want to do then you should do what you want to do.

I know that may seem a bit simple but sometimes it’s an easy thing to comprehend. The one thing I will suggest though is if you are going to shave your head make sure it’s done properly so that you’re hair will grow back properly.

When I was younger I began losing my hair early (was around 15 or so.) and I thought the solution was to have a friend of mine take my Norelco electric razor and trim my hair down with the sideburn trimmer and then, take a razor and shaving cream and shave it down. I admittedly was not the smartest person back in my teens and, I don’t remember most of that period of my life. In this case I think my thinking was along the lines of believing that once it was shaved, that somehow my hair would grow back fuller then it was previous and that somehow would stand off family genetics. (It was definitely not the most rational thinking on my part.)

Furthermore the friend I had do it whom was bald himself, had no clue what he was doing and did not do it properly. The end result was I actually went balder quicker and as I will be turning 28 this year, I look like a Jason Alexander look a like and, some people actually think I am older then I actually am. Sometimes with the everyday stresses of life and other things it’s hard to believe that I am not older especially when sometimes physically I’ll feel it.

My advice is simple if it’s what you want to do, you should do what you want to do but please be smart about it.

I’m praying for you and your family and wish you nothing but the best.

My mom is the same with her hair. I don't know if I could personally shave my head. That's very brave of you and extremely supportive.
I'm not saying I wouldn't support my mother, but I'd find it difficult to shave my head since I cherish my hair dearly.
I give you huge props for being so supportive though! *Gives you a Family Support medal*

bvd1022 : How do you suggest I do it so my hair won't wind up screwed up the rest of my life?
I do wanna shave my head, but I want my hair to grow back eventually too. So yeah. How should I do it?

XxChaosxX : As I've already told you, I'm absolutely fine with your decision and support it all the way, you couldn't do anything to yourself that would make me love you any less. I do hope your mom gets better after all of this.

As for your question: Can't honestly say I'd shave my head for much of anything because I just can't stand my hair being short .

I would not shave my hair, it took me eleven years to grow it this long. You have a lot more guts than me!!

My best friend shaved her head for a mohawk and she cut it so it was about 1/5 inch short, not completely shaved smooth. Her hair grew back fine. First you should cut it with scissors. You might want to get it done at a salon.

XxChaosxX : My suggestion would be to go get it done by a professional if possible. It may cost you a couple of bucks to go to a salon or something like that but it’s better then having a friend or a relative that may not know what their doing do it where the results may be mixed at best.

I think that it is a very brave and respectful thing to do. I think you are making a tough decision, and are going through some tough things right now. Just don't let any emotions connected to what you are going through cause you to make any irrational and impulsive decisions that you will regret later. I support your decision, and I wish your mother the best. Good luck with the decision, sorry if I'm being cryptic and unhelpful.

That's so cool that you would do that for your Mom, but I wouldn't do it for a personal reason. I would be there next to my comforting her with a head of hair.

XxChaosxX : A guy I know had a similar situation only his mother-in-law was going through kemo and she wouldnt shave her head to make it all grow back even so he told her if she'd shave her head he'd shave his head. (Because he got tired of seeing little nubs of hair on her head growing in uneven) lol and it was fine! His hair grew back pretty quickly. I say do it for your mom, show her you support her. I just recomend wearing a hat afterwerds so you dont catch a head cold because those are the worst!
I hope your moms treatment goes well!
